Abstract
Illuminated Motor Vehicle Registration Plate (IMVRP). This innovative number plate has an integrated light source from inside the registration plate which when illuminated provides clear registration identification for greater distances than the current registration plates used. Using either replacement plates or built into the vehicle design, the illuminated registration plate will obtain its power from the vehicles 12/24 volt systems. The plate utilises an integrated light guide plate (LGP) based on micro-prism structure by using traditional transparent polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) materials, which can be designed to control the illumination angle to establish high uniformity of intensity. The light source is based on light emitting diode (LED) technology and can be either embedded into or attached to the surface of the material. In addition to the illumination qualities, the number plan can be electronically tagged with the vehicle's engine control unit (ECU) system for car theft alarm or police tagging requirements.

Description
Illuminated Motor Vehicle Registration Plate (IIVIVRP).
Background
The recognition of registration plates is a complex technological undertaking from optical scanning to instant stolen vehicles register recognition point of view. The typical registration recognition systems depend much on the weather conditions and visibility for scanning. To enhance the readability, the illuminated plate can increase or decrease the intensity of the light source to accommodate a better view of the registration number in poor weather conditions or in daylight to night transitions. Scanning an electronically charged plate using infrared is also a possibility thus increasing the electronic recognition of the plate. The utilisation of an infrared code stored in the device to transmit the registration details based on the car VIN is also a possibility with this innovation.
Description
The illuminated Motor Vehicle Registration Plate (JMVR.P) has an integrated light source from inside the registration plate which provides dear registration identification for greater distances than the current registration plates used as the light source will come from within the plate itself (Figi, a). The accessory can be used either as replacement plates on old vehicles built into new vehicle design or professionally installed. The power can be gained from the current rear light supply for a DIY installation using a simple connector (Fig 1, b). The plate utilises an integrated LOP based on micro-prism stiucture by using traditional transparent polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) materials, which can be designed to control the illumination angle to establish high uniformity of intensity (Fig I,c). The light source is based on LED technology (Figi, c) and can be either embedded into or attached to the surface of the material. In addition to the illumination qualities, the number plan can be electronically tagged with the vehicles ECU system for car theft alarm or police tagging requirements (Figi, d). The transmission of the vehicle VIN or registration number can be integrated with an electronic infrared reader to display the registration (Figi, e). The chip inside the plate has the vehicle VIN stored and consequently when scanned should match records, owner, VIN and registration instantly.
Examples of use:
* Simple use of an electronic illuminated registration plate and its aesthetic value to the vehicle owner * Improved human readability from greater distances * Electronically scanned by the current Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems * Electronically scanned via an infrared scan based on OCR * Electronically scanned via a hand held device for registration and vehicle yIN matching * Electronic scan and visual match of registration number * Linked to the vehicles Control Area Network for infrared interrogation of any ECU or ECM parameter.
* Stolen Vehicle checks * Automatic, faster interrogation of vehicle using camera vehicle identification * ECU updates and trouble code resetting via ECU links.
