Abstract
A booster cushion has a harness whereby it can be carried on the back of a child in the manner of a backpack. The booster cushion preferably has an internal storage compartment closed by means of a spring-loaded flap at the top of the backpack. There may also be additional compartments at the sides of the backpack for pens, pencils and other paraphernalia.
Description
BOOSTER CUSHIONS
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to booster cushions or booster seats for use in motor vehicles. Such cushions or seats are hereinafter referred to generically as booster cushions'.
Current Government legislation requires that children travelling in motor vehicles who are up to and including the age of eleven and who are under the height of 135 cms are required to use a booster cushion. Many children who previously would not have wished to use a booster cushion are now required to use one until they reach the age of twelve.
Parents are normally diligent in the provision of booster cushions in their own vehicles but, all too often, this does not apply to their children when travelling in the vehicles of their friends and family. In addition, it would not be good for the image of a self-respecting ten-year-old to be seen walking around with a booster cushion under his or her arm.
It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide an improved safety device.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a safety device comprising a combined booster cushion and backpack.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a booster cushion having a harness whereby it can be carried on the back of a child in the manner of a backpack.
The booster cushion preferably has an internal storage compartment within which school books and other items can be placed. Access to the internal storage compartment is preferably obtained via an opening which, when the device is being carried as a backpack, is at the top of the device. The opening is preferably normally closed by means of a spring-loaded flap.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 is a front view of a combined backpack and booster cushion, Figure 2 is side view of the combined backpack and booster cushion, Figure 3 shows the combined backpack and booster cushion in position on a vehicle seat, Figure 4 is a sectional view of the combined backpack and booster cushion along the line 4 -4 of Figure 5, and Figure 5 is a sectional view of the combined backpack and booster cushion along the line 5 -5 of Figure 4.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
The combined backpack and booster cushion shown in the drawings comprises a main body 10 formed as a plastic moulding from polypropylene or some other plastics material having the required strength characteristics and a pair of padded harness straps 11 attached to the main body 10. The main body 10 has an external configuration corresponding to that of a booster cushion.
As can be seen from Figures 4 and 5, there is a storage compartment 12 within the main body 10, and files, a ring binder, books and the like can be placed within this storage compartment 12. Access to the storage compartment 12 is obtained by opening the a spring-loaded flap 13 which is so positioned that, when the combined backpack and booster cushion is placed on the back of the user, the flap 13 is disposed at the uppermost part of the main body 10. In addition to providing a storage compartment 12 within the main body 10, it is possible to provide additional compartments 14 at the sides of the combined backpack and cushion. Access to these additional compartments 14 is obtained by opening zip fasteners. Pens, pencils, keys and other items can be placed in the additional compartments 14.
The combined backpack and cushion is thus a utilitarian item in that it can be carried on the back of a child, in the manner of a backpack or satchel, for the transport of school books and other items. It can also be used as a booster cushion, by being placed on a vehicle seat in the manner shown in Figure 3. As the child will have the combined backpack and cushion readily available when, for example, returning from school, a neighbour collecting a child from school will be able to bring the child home in a safe and legal manner.
