Abstract

A display sign comprises a substrate sheet 10 of, preferably foamed, plastics PVC material. The front face of the substrate sheet 10 comprises a surface layer 11 including a plasticiser. The plasticiser renders the front face of the substrate sheet 10 adherent. The front surface layer 11 is releasably adhered to the rear face of a display sheet 12, which is provided on its front face with the image to be displayed. The display sheet 12 is preferably formed of paper or card and comprises a smooth, glossy rear face. In order to change the image being displayed, the display sheet 12 is simply peeled away from the substrate sheet 10 and a new sheet adhered in its place. The adherent properties of the surface layer 11 of the substrate sheet 10 are not degraded thus it is possible to repeatedly replace the display sheet 12. Alternatively, the surface layer 11 may be coated with a releasable pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA). The sheet 10 may be bounded by a frame which may hold the edges of the display sheet 12 in place and can be used to attach the sign to a support, perhaps using adhesive.

Description

Display Sign This invention relates to a display sign and more
particularly but not solely to a display sign for displaying advertisements and the like.
It is well known to adhere advertising signs to building structures or to the sides of vehicles. Typically such signs comprise a sheet of PVC which is printed on one side and which carries an adhesive on its other side. In use, the signs are adhered in situ by removing a backing sheet and applying the adhesive side of the sign to the surface on which the sign is to be provided.
A disadvantage of the above-mentioned arrangement is that the signs can be very difficult to remove and hazardous cleaning solvents are often needed to remove any residue of the adhesive from the support structure. Also, PVC is not bio-degradable and accordingly, it is desirable to reduce the use of PVC as far as possible.
I have now devised a display sign which alleviates the above-mentioned problems.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a display sign comprising a body of PVC having at least a surface layer thereof including an adhesive, the sign further comprising a display sheet having a rear face to which said surface layer is releasably adherent.
The front face of the display sheet is printed or otherwise provided with the text, graphics or other images to be displayed. The display sheet is firmly held in situ by the adhesive surface layer of the body. However, the display sheet can readily be removed by simply peeling it away from the body of the sign In one embodiment, the surface layer of the body comprises a plasticiser which renders said surface layer adherent. A new display sheet can then be adhered to the body, since the adherent properties of the plasticised PVC surface layer thereof are not degraded. If necessary, Ihe surface layer can be washed prior to attaching a new display sheet but it is envisaged that this will only be necessary about one in every fifty times.
In an alternative embodiment, the surface layer of the body comprises a releasable pressure-sensitive adhesive.
Whilst the body is formed of PVC, the display sheet can be formed of paper of other bio-degradable material. In this manner, the amount of waste plastics material is significantly reduced Preferably the surface layer of the body comprises foamed PVC Preferably the rear face of the display sheet is glossy, since plasticised PVC and releasable adhesives adhere more readily to surfaces which are glossy (i e. surfaces which have a low roughness and a high specular reflectance).
Preferably the body is a sheet of PVC, which is preferably bounded by a frame.
The frame may be arranged to constrain the edges of the display sheet against the substrate sheet. The frame may be arranged for attaching to a support structure.
Alternatively, the rear face of the substrate may comprise an adhesive for attaching the display sign to a support structure or the substrate sheet may be attached to a support structure by applying an adhesive to its rear face.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of an example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a display sign in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is a sectional view along the line Il-Il of Figure 1 Referring to the drawings, there is shown a display sign comprising a substrate sheet 10 of foamed plastics PVC material. The front face of the substrate sheet 10 comprises a surface layer 11 including a plasticiser The plasticiser renders the front face of the substrate sheet 10 adherent.
The surface layer 11 of the substrate sheet 10 is releasably adhered to the rear face of a display sheet 12, which is provided on its front face with the image to be displayed. The display sheet 12 is preferably formed of a paper or card and comprises glossy rear face. the adhesive surface layer 11 of the substrate sheet 10 adheres more readily to a glossy surface.
The sign further comprises a peripheral frame 13, which may secure the edges of the display sheet 12 against the substrate sheet 10.
If necessary, the adherent properties of the surface 11 of the display sheet 10 can be restored by washing the surface with water.
In an alternative embodiment, the front face of the substrate sheet 10 is unplasticised and is coated with a pressure sensitive low tack releasable adhesive.
A display sign in accordance with the present invention is simple and inexpensive in construction, yet enables images to be displayed in a reliable manner and in such a way that the images can easily be replaced. The waste material produced when the images are changed is only paper, which is readily recyclable. a
