Abstract
A clutch which shifts gears in an automatic transmission, comprises a piston 2 mounted within a piston housing 1 so as to form a volume therebetween. This volume, e.g. dead volume, is filled out with a sponge material when the clutch is released. The sponge material may be fixed by glue to a back of the piston housing 1 or to the piston 2 or to both so as to achieve a spring effect. The addition of the sponge material decreases the size of the dead volume thereby reducing the shift time since oil has to fill out a smaller volume at a beginning of a shift because the sponge material keeps the oil in place when the piston 2 is not activated. Piston 2 is axially moveable with respect to a compensator and configured to selectively abut and engage a clutch pack.
Description
Clutch for an Automatic Transmission The invention relates to a clutch
for an automatic transmission.
In automatic transmissions, gear shifts are done by applying hydraulic pistons on clutch packs as illustrated by the following
prior art.
The document VS 6,684,995 A describes a clutch assembly for a transmission which is configured selectively to interconnect a rotating member by engagement of a clutch pack. The clutch assembly includes a compensator and a piston which is axially moveable with respect to the compensator and configured selectively to abut and engage the clutch pack to interconnect the first and second rotating members. A clutch housing encloses the piston, compensator and clutch pack. A piston cavity is formed between the housing and piston to receive fluid from a clutch apply feed orifice to actuate the piston. A compensator cavity is formed between the compensator and piston to receive fluid from a compensator feed orifice. The piston cavity and compensator cavity are configured such that fluid in the compensator cavity provides a greater centrifugal pressure force against the piston in a clutch release direction than fluid in the piston cavity provides against the piston in a clutch apply direction during rotation, thereby eliminating the need for a return spring in the compensator cavity.
A clutch piston amplifier assembly is known from document US 2005/0284724 A]. which is provided for applying pressure to a clutch pack for engaging a first member and second member of an automatic transmission. The clutch piston amplifier assembly utilizes an amplifier piston which applies a secondary force to an apply piston for increasing the apply force that can be obtained from the clutch assembly without increasing the diameter of the apply piston of the line pressure supplied to the piston assembly.
The invention seeks to find an economic solution to increase the shift speed of the clutch.
This can be achieved according to the claimed subject matter in that the volume which is present between the clutch piston and the piston housing upon releasing of the clutch piston is filled out with material.
The invention makes use of the following considerations.
When the hydraulic piston is released, there is a volume called "dead volume" in the piston chamber. At the beginning of the shift, the oil has to fill out this dead volume: the bigger the volume is, the longer the shift is. As a consequence, dead volume has to be decreased in order to improve the shift speed (reduce shift time) By adding the material into the dead volume, the dead volume can be reduced and thereby the shift speed improved.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the material has a spongy structure.
The material may be sponge. This material adopts the form of the piston housing and of the clutch piston and its spongy structure allows Oil pressure to be applied on entire piston surface prior to its take-off and the oil keeps in place when the piston is not actuated.
According to an embodiment, the material can be fixed in the back of the piston housing.
Alternatively, it is possible to fix the material on the clutch piston.
It is also possible according to an embodiment that the material is fixed both in the back of the piston housing and on the clutch piston thereby achieving a spring effect.
This spring effect could replace the piston return spring in some specific cases.
The present invention will become fully understood from the detailed description and the accompanying drawing, wherein: Fig. 1 is a schematic view of a clutch system corresponding to an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows the piston housing 1 as well as the corresponding clutch piston 2 and the piston spring 3.
According to the preferred embodiment, the "dead volume" between the piston housing 1 and the clutch piston 2 is reduced as much as possible by adding material 4, preferably spongy material in this dead volume.
This spongy material 4 may be either fixed in the back of the pistozi housing 1 or on the clutch piston 2. It is also possible to fix the spongy material on both piston housing 1 and clutch piston 2. The spongy material 4 having a spring effect, it might be possible to replace the piston return spring 3 by the spongy material 4 in some specific cases.
The spongy material 4 may be glued to the piston housing 1 and/or the clutch piston 2 with an adequate glue.
