Abstract
A retail smart card brings together a number of currently separate customer functions in the retail environment. The smart card is issued to the customer and can have a magnetic stripe, bar code or RFID that contains a unique identifying code. The code could alternatively be entered using a keyboard. Possible customer functions are the identification of discounts, loyalty points, issue of credit notes, club savings accounts, gift purchase, order status, or money owing. The smart card can be designed to contain the individual retailer's logo and reflect the image of the retailer. If a plastic card is used this could be presented in a presentation box or leather wallet to achieve additional marketing emphasis. Equally the device could be a key fob or other promotional item selected by the retailer.

Retailers Smart Card System
Background
I have been developing software for the retail industry for the past 5-6 years. This development includes the ability to address the requirements at the Point of Sale and the Back Office. The functionality provided addresses alt of the issues from selecting the stock to be acquired, raising the purchase order with the supplier, receipt of the goods, processing of the suppliers invoice/credit note, stocktaking, transferring goods between locations, storing the details of customers and the sales made to those customers or generally and any returns made together with recording payments made in full, by instalment or in advance either in person or via the Internet and providing the ability to target customers or prospects by mailing and other means in order to promote the business. During my time in the industry I have seen a number of individual ways used by Retailers to service the needs of promoting their products, track the loyalty of customers, issue Credit Notes, operate Club Accounts, issue and redeem Gift Vouchers, identify Special Orders for non stock items, track items left for repair, but these are all independent and inefficient.
The Problem it solves I have developed a unique identifier system called the "Retail Smart Card System" which allows the retailer to bring together all of these customer functions under one umbrella.
This then solves the retailers issues of Holding incorrect customer data (Data Protection Act compliance) Customers giving details while on a busy shop floor on High Value Purchases (Security, Accuracy, Convenience, Time Consuming) Customers hold a number of documents for each issue which is inconvenient and cumbersome e.g. A Gift Voucher A Credit Note A Repair Ticket A Deposit Item The "Retail Smart Card System" dramatically improves the effectiveness of the retailer and the stafL By using the "Retail Smart Card System" the retailer can readily identify the customer, check the data held is correct and see what Club money they are holding, any unused Gift Vouchers, items left for repair uncollected, items on special order, identify items selected by customers but held by the retailer until the full payment has been made by the customer etc.
Patents Description
Retailers Smart Card System The key features The "Retail Smart Card System" upon receiving a unique identifier that is transmitted by a number of means that would include keyboard entry, optical data recognition (e.g bar coding), magnetic reading (Magnetic Strip Card), radio frequency identification (RFID) can identify or create the data written or held sufficient to display to the user on a screen or provide by report any of the processes for which the "Retail Smart Card System" has been used and the appropriate details.
1. When used for promotional purposes, the Retail Smart Card System will identify the discounts available or a choice of goods that are available at beneficial prices.
2. When used for loyalty purposes, the Retail Smart Card System will identify the benefits gained in terms of points or some other rating.
3. When used to issue a credit note for the return of goods the Retail Smart Card System will identify the amount and details of the credit available 4. When used to accept monies into a club savings account the Retail Smart Card System will identify the amounts accumulated and the amount available for spending.
5. When used to identify the customer the Retail Smart Card System will display to the retailer the customers name and address details and then optionally allow further information held on that customer to be accessed and displayed and reported.
6. When used for the purposes of a gift the Retail Smart Card System will initially identify the amount of the gift purchased and subsequently allow the gift to be identified to a customer 7. When used to identify an account customer the Retail Smart Card System will identify the amount owing to or by the customer 8. When used to identify items left by the customer for repair the Retail Smart Card System will enable the history of previous repairs to be identified together with the status of any current repair items 9. When used in respect of Special Orders placed by the customer the Retail Smart Card System will allow identification of the current status of the order in terms of the stocking or suppliers delivery position and when being manufactured the current stage of the process.
10. When used to identify items selected by the customer but retained by the Retailer until paid for in full the Retail Smart Card System will allow identification of these items and amounts left to pay.
Patents Description
Retailers Smart Card System Additional Key Features The device issued to the Customer or prospect would typically be a plastic card (similar to a Credit Card) with a magnetic stripe, bar code or RFID that contained an embedded code. This device can be designed to contain the individual Retailers logo and reflect the image of the Retailer. If a plastic card is used this could be presented in a presentation box or leather wallet to achieve additional marketing emphasis.
Equally the device could be a key fob or other promotional item selected by the retailer.
