Abstract

The invention relates to a foundation 10 for a small structure e.g. a conservatory, garage, porches, outbuildings or small extensions. The foundation or base of the conservatory is supported on a generally metallic horizontal foundation 10 arranged underground on one ore more support means 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. The support means are preferably a series of piles 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 driven vertically into the ground with a metallic ring beam foundation 10 on top of the piles so as to be underground. The ring beam 10 is preferably formed from a plurality of L-shaped elongate sections with vertical 11 and horizontal 12 portions. A metal pin or bar 13 is preferably inserted through a corresponding hole in the horizontal portion 12 of the L-shaped foundation into a blind aperture running down the axis of each pile 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Blocks or bricks may then be built upon the horizontal portion 12 of the foundation 10. Later embodiments relate to a method of building said structure and a kit of parts comprising said foundation.

Description

Foundation for Small Structure The present invention relates to a
foundation, or supporting structure or base, for a small structure. In particular, although not exclusively, the present invention relates to a foundation, or base, for a conservatory.
It is common for many small structures, such as conservatories, outbuildings, garages, porches, small extensions and other small structures, to be constructed on a foundation made from concrete which is poured on site.
In order to form the foundation using on-site poured concrete, extensive preparation of the site is required and access to a supply of concrete is needed. Both of these can be inconvenient and expensive.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a foundation or base for a small structure which overcomes these disadvantages.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a foundation or base for a small structure which does not require the use of fresh concrete.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a foundation or base for a small structure which is easy, convenient and cheap to build.
According to the present invention there is provided an apparatus and method as set forth in the appended claims. Preferred features of the invention will be apparent from the dependent claims, and the description which follows.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a small structure supported upon a generally metallic foundation arranged underground to be substantially horizontal upon one or more support means.
Advantageously, a metallic foundation is easy to construct and relatively low weight. Thus, a cost of construction is reduced and the small structure more easily erected.
The foundation may have a generally L-shaped cross-section.
The small structure may be supported upon a horizontal portion of the L-shaped section to coextend upwardly with a vertical portion of the L-shaped section.
The foundation may be a continuous ring. In this sense, it is understood that the ring is not necessarily circular.
Preferably, the ring is rectangular or square shaped.
Preferably, the foundation is formed from a plurality of elongate sections.
The elongate sections forming the foundation are welded together.
When the foundation is formed from a plurality of L-shaped sections, the vertical portion of each section is arranged at a perimeter, or outer periphery, of the ring.
Preferably, the foundation is engaged with the one or more support means.
The support means may be one or more elongate support means.
Preferably, the foundation is arranged generally above the elongate support means.
The foundation may be arranged completely below ground level.
Preferably, the foundation and at least one elongate support may be interengaged.
An engagement member may be arranged to engage the at least one elongate support and the foundation.
Preferably, each elongate support is arranged substantially vertically underground.
Preferably, each underground support is generally elongate vertically.
Preferably, each underground support is a pile.
Preferably, the foundation is arranged below ground level.
Preferably, the foundation is arranged underneath a surface of surrounding ground.
Preferably, the small structure is a conservatory.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of building a small structure, comprising: arranging at least one support underground; arranging a generally metallic foundation underground substantially horizontally upon the at least one support; erecting a small structure on the foundation.
Preferably, the arranging of at least one elongate support underground comprises inserting an elongate member into the ground.
The elongate member may be inserted downward into the ground.
Preferably, the elongate member is inserted to be entirely underground.
The elongate member may be a pile.
The resting of the foundation upon at least one elongate support may comprise engaging the foundation with the at least one elongate support.
The engaging may comprise inserting a member through the foundation into the elongate support.
Preferably, the foundation is pre-fabrjcated as a ring beam. The ring-beam may be pre-fabricated from a plurality of elongate metallic sections. The pre-fabrication may comprise welding the elongate metallic sections together.
The method may comprise the step of excavating a region around the foundation prior to arranging the at least one elongate support underground.
Preferably, the foundation is arranged upon the at least one elongate support and then covered with ground material.
Preferably, the foundation is erected without the use of liquid concrete.
The method may comprise the step of erecting a small structure upon the foundation.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided a kit of parts comprising at least one elongate support member for insertion into the ground; and a generally metallic foundation for arranging generally horizontally upon the support member to support a small structure thereon.
For a better understanding of the invention, and to show how embodiments of the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective cross-section through a foundation of a first preferred embodiment of the present invention; and Figure 2 is a side cross section through a small structure built upon the foundation of the first preferred embodiment.
Referring to Figure 1, a preferred embodiment 1 of the present invention comprises a plurality of piles 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and a metal ring beam foundation 10 arranged thereon.
The piles 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 are, as will be appreciated by the skilled person, driven into the ground in substantially vertical arrangement. The piles 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 support the metal ring beam foundation, which is arranged upon the top of the piles 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 so as to be underground.
The ring beam foundation 10 is formed from a plurality of L-shaped elongate sections, to have vertical 11 and horizontal 12 portions. The vertical rim of the ring beam foundation 10 is arranged around the outer periphery of the foundation 10. In order to engage the foundation 10 upon the piles 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, a metal pin or bar 13 is inserted through a corresponding hole in the horizontal portion of the L-shaped foundation into a blind aperture running down the vertical axis of each pile 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
A small structure 20, such as a conservatory, garage, etc. may be constructed upon the foundation 10, supported by the piles 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. For example, blocks or bricks may be built upon the horizontal portion 12 of the foundation 10, such that a vertical outer edge of the blocks or bricks is coextensive with the inside vertical portion 11 of the L-shaped section 10. A damp proof course 21 can insulate the structure from the foundation 10. The vertical tie 13 can engage the structure 20 to connect the foundation and structure 20.
The present invention provides a method and apparatus to quickly, conveniently and cheaply build small structures. The present invention avoids the need for concrete pouring on site, and the transportation of concrete foundations.
Although a few preferred embodiments have been shown and described, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications might be made without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
