Abstract

The invention relates to a structural fitting 1 for a cavity wall (14 figure 3) within a building and comprises an elongate plate 2 adapted to be supported within the cavity wall (14 figure 3). The plate is formed with a plurality of drain holes 4 extending along the length of the structural fitting 1. The drain holes 4 allow water which enters the cavity wall from above to drain down through the fitting to the lower pat of the cavity wall (14 figure 3). The structural fitting 1 may comprise a second elongate plate 3 which is adapted to extend across the cavity wall (14 figure 3) and deflect to one side of the cavity wall (14 figure 3) any water which enters the cavity wall (14 figure 3) from above. The first 2 and second 3 elongate plates may be joined together to form a cruciform cross section. The structural fittings may be fitted into the cavity wall (14 figure 3) by sliding them into the cavity from one end. The structural fittings are dimensioned such that they fit tightly into the cavity wall (14 figure 3). The spaces between the structural fittings may be filled with insulating material (15 figure 3) or left empty as required.

STRUCTURAL FITFING FOR BUILDING
The present invention relates to a structural fitting for use in the construction or modification of buildings.
In a building which comprises one or more levels or floors of flats (apartments) the outer walls of the building are usually formed with cavity walls with spaces which extend from the top of the building to the bottom.
The spaces in the cavity walls can be filled with insulating material either during the main construction of the building or at a later stage.
It is desirable to prevent any water and/or small additional pieces of insulating material from mixing with the main body of insulating material in the cavity wall.
Further, the portions of the cavity walls which coincide with each with each level of flats can be selectively filled with insulating material or left empty depending on the wish of the building constructor or the wish of the person or persons occupying each level of flats.
According to the invention a structural fitting for a cavity wall within a building comprises an elongate plate adapted to be supported in the cavity wall and formed with a plurality of drain holes extending along the length of the structural fitting so as to allow water which enters the cavity from above to drain down through the fitting to the lower part of the cavity wall.
According to another aspect of the invention the fitting comprises a second elongate plate which is adapted to extend across the fitting so as to deflect to one side of the cavity wall any water which falls into the cavity wall from above.
The fitting may comprise two plates joined together to form a cruciform cross section with the row of drain holes located on one plate.
According to yet another aspect of the invention the structural fitting is adapted to hold the insulating material in position in the cavity wall.
According to a further aspect of the invention the fitting is adapted to prevent relatively small pieces of insulation material from falling into the cavity wall.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood reference will now be made the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a structural fitting according to the invention, Figure 2 is an end view of the structural fitting illustrated in Figure 1, and Figure 3 is a diagrammatic view of a building containing several levels of flats (apartments) and an outer cavity wall and showing the structural fitting illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 in position in the cavity wall.
With reference to Figures 1 and 2 the structural fitting I comprises two elongate members 2 and 3 joined together to form a structure with a cruciform cross section as clearly illustrated in Figure 2. One member 2 is formed with a row of drain holes 4 extending along its length while the other member 3 is solid. The holes 4 are approximately 5 mm in diameter at approximately 15 mm centres. The overall width of the structural fitting I as viewed in Figure 2 is approximately 65 mm or so as to fit tightly across a cavity wall (see Figure 3).
Figure 3 illustrates diagrammatically a building having several levels of flats (apartments) 11, 12 and 13 extending between cavity walls one of which is illustrated at 14. The cavity wall 14 is adapted to be filled with insulating material 15 either during the original building or at a later stage. For example, the occupants of flat 12 may want cavity wall insulating material whereas the occupants of flats 11 and 13 may not want the insulating material in the cavity wall.
The structural fittings I are adapted to be fitted into the cavity wall 14 by sliding them into the cavity from one end and are dimensioned so that they fit tightly in the cavity wall 14. The spaces between the structural fittings may be filled with insulating material or left empty as required.
The structural fittings 1 are designed to operate as follows.
If any water 16 falls down within the cavity wall it will fall onto the top structural fitting and will pass through the holes 4 in the upper elongate member 2 onto the lower elongate member 3 and will then flow across the lower member 3 to the boundary wall of the cavity wall and be absorbed in the boundary wall or will run down the boundary wall.
If any loose insulating material or other unwanted material 17 falls down within the cavity wall 14, it will fall onto and be retained by the top structural fitting and will not contaminate or form a bridge on the top of any insulating material or other material positioned below the structural fitting.
