Abstract

The interlocking sections 2,4,6,8, for forming the seating unit to support a manhole cover frame on top of a concrete covering slab, are each provided with male 19 and female joint portions to enable a number of sections to be interlocked to form the seating unit. The joint portions are preferably mortise joints. The abutment surfaces of the sections are preferably roughened or recessed to facilitate engagement with mortar. The sections may be reinforced.

Description

Manhole Sections and a Method for ConstructinQ Manholes The present
invention relates to pre-cast interlocking sections. More particularly to sections used to aid in the construction of Manholes, Gullys etc. Manholes are well known, which comprise a network of pipes for canying away foul and wastewater, upon which sits the main chamber.
This being formed from precast concrete rings with a covering slab to cap the chamber, thus creating a working space for a person to enter and to carry the frame and cover.
Brick work or pre-cast seating units are built on top of the covering slab so that the cover and frame can be fitted to suit the required ground level.
Pre-cast concrete seating units are best known for there speed and strength over the more conventual method of brick built Manholes. Seating units are designed to be manually lifted, one unit exceeds the recommended weight that one or two persons should hft, according to the H.S.E. Manual Handling Regulations.
According to the present invention there is provided prefabricated, lightweight, interlocking mortise sections for the rapid construction of Manholes upon the covering slab to sit the frame and cover on.
Preferably, the sections are formed from a solid substance and may be reinforced.
Possibly, the surfaces of the sections may be recessed or roughened to facilitate the mortar engagement.
Possibly, the sections may have one or more male and female mortise joints.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 Shows a schematic side view illustrating the Manhole mortise sections in position, in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 Is a plan aerial view of a complete layer of the Manhole mortise sections in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 3 Is a plan view of a second Manhole section in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 4 Is a plan view of a third embodiment of a Manhole section in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 5 Is a plan view of a fourth section in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 6 Is a plan view of a fifth embodiment of a Manhole section in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawing in Figure 1, the manhole comprises a network of pipes iQ upon which sits the chamber 12 creating the working area j4 for a person to work in.
This is then capped with a covering slab 16 leaving a smaller access opening around which the precast sections 18 are placed to lift the cover and frame to the finished ground level.
In order to build the Manhole using the precast sections.fi as shown in Figure 1, and illustrated in Figure 2, section 18 number 2 is placed on a bed of mortar around the opening and then sections numbers 4,6, 8 are lowered into place using the same procedure, and so on, until it reaches the required height Figure 3 illustrates a third embodiment, having a rectangle mortise joint i, Figure 4 has a wedge shape mortise, Figure 5 has a round-oval shape mortise and Figure 6 has a T shaped mortise. 4.

Claims (5)

1. Manhole sections comprising a number of interlocking sections that when locked together form the main structure or access point to the main chamber of any size or shape.
2. Manhole sections as claimed in claim 1 wherein the member may have more than one interlocking section of a male and female mortise joint.
3. Manhole sections as claimed in claim I or claim 2 wherein the male and female mortise joints can be shaped to receive a matching projection of another piece.
4. Manhole sections as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3 wherein abutment surfaces of the section are roughened or recessed to facilitate abutment or mortar engagement with another layer.
5. Manhole sections as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the member is formed from a solid substance and maybe reinforced with a steel rod or any other suitable material.
