Abstract
The invention relates to a vehicle occupant sight testing assembly comprising a sight testing device arranged on or adjacent a road so that a vehicle occupant is able to view the sight test means from the vehicle and perform a sight test whilst they remain in the vehicle.
Description
Improvernens to road safety Lots olvehicic drivers have inadequate
eyesight. Poor driver eyesight causes a lot of road accidents.
According to the invention there is provided a vehicle occupant sight testing assembly comprising, a vehicle stopping area on or adjacent a road, and a sight testing means on or adjacent the mad In this way, when a vehicle stops in the vehicle stopping area the sight testing means can be used to test the occupant's (e.g. the driver's) eyesight.
Preferably the sight testing means able to communicate results and/or notice to occupant.
: ... Preferably the sight testing means able to communicate results to vehicle authority such * s as DVLA or police. Most preferably, the sight testing means is in electronic communication with the vehicle authority.
Preferably the vehicle driver sight testing assembly comprises number plate reading : technology. Preferably CCTV or the like is in operation to monitor test * avoidance/cheating. A warning or pcnalty can be imposed on drivers who circumvent testing. Driver liability and payment can be dealt with in a similar manner to that used to * administer speeding offences. ** S
*. .: Preferably the vehicle driver sight testing assembly is alTanged so that the driver remains in the car whilst the testing is carried out.
Preferably vehicle occupant sight testing assembly comprises a vehicle barricr arranged adjacent vehicle stopping area. The vehicle barrier is preferably arranged to prevent vehicle passing until test conducted. Moreover, the vehicle barrier may be arranged to prevent vehicle passing if negative sight test results. A warning or penalty can be imposed on drivers who fail the test. A.c above, driver liability and payment can be dealt with in a similar manner to that used to administer speeding offences.
Preferably the vehicle driver sight testing assembly is arranged at a motorway toll or the like. In this way, the driver only needs to stop once for payment and test. The vehicle occupant sight testing assembly comprises a control unit, which may have buttons, touch pads, or the like, or voice recognition. The control unit may have a set of n (e.g. three) options corresponding to n (e.g. three) images being shown at the sight test means. The Lest images may be randomly computer generated. A user can be instructed that a certain image of e.g. the letter A" will be always be one of the three images. The user may then select the option which corresponds to the certain image. The user can press a button or Lhc like on the apparatus to answer the test. The control unit may be provided with twenty six buuons. touch pads or the like, each corresponding to the letters of the English alphabet. A different number may be provided for other alphabcls. The sight test assembly may be arranged to display a letter, which must be input by user at control unit.
The sight test assembly may be arranged to display a plurality of letters, which must be input in sequence by user at control unit. The plurality of letters may be shown one at a time.
In one embodiment, a national identity card may be obligatofy for use on the machine so as to prevent Id fraud.
The vchiclc barrier is prefcrably arranged to allow the vehicle to pass oncc test conducted. However, in cerlain situations the vehicle barrier may be arranged to prevent the vehicle once test conducted, e.g. if eyesight is adjudged to be extremely poor. S. * . * I*.
*::: Some people drive the same routes frequently. The vehicle driver sight testing assembly may be arranged so that if a recent (successful) test has been carried out the test is simply : dispensed with. This avoids unduly slowing the ti-atTic. The vehicic driver sight testing * S assembly may be arranged so that if more than one passenger is sensed in the car e.g. by * : CCIV, and appropriate means, e.g. pattern recognition software, the test is dispensed with as it cannot then be guaranteed that the driver, and not the passenger, is providing the test answers.
*:*. Figure shows:-Vehicle 10 Sight test means 12 Barrier control means 13 Barrier 14 Control unit 16 Sight test means 12 and control unit 16 in wireless communication.
Control unit 16 emits wireless signal to authorities.
