Description

TRANSIT AND DISPLAY CONTAINERS
The present invention relates to transit and display containers and to blanks for making such containers.
From a first aspect, the invention provides a blank for a transit and display container, said blank comprising a plurality of side wall panels, a first of said side wall panels having an opening defined therein and a first flap at least partially closing said opening, said blank further comprising a second flap hingedly attached to the top of said first side wall panel about a hinge line, said first flap being rotatable out of said first side wall panel so as to form a top closure flap for the container, and said second flap being rotatable around said hinge line so as to lie behind said first side wall panel and at least partially cover the opening in the first side wall panel and overlap a portion of said first side wall panel surrounding said opening, said second flap and said portion of said side wall panel which it overlaps then being removable together from the container.
Preferably the second flap completely covers the opening in the first side wall panel when folded over so as to prevent access to the container's contents.
Preferably the second flap is of substantially the same height as the first side wall panel such that when folded over it extends to the bottom of the side wall panel, thereby adding strength to the side wall.
In a preferred embodimet, the second flap comprises fold lines which facilitate the removal of the second flap from the container. In particular, the fold lines are positioned so as to facilitate the second flap being pulled through the opening in the first side wall panel. Upwardly extending fold lines may be provided which allow the sides of the second flap to move towards each other, reducing the transverse dimension of the second flap. These fold lines may be angled to the vertical. Fold lines may be provided extending transversely across the upper edge of the second flap so as to facilitate deformation of that part of the second flap as it is pulled through.
Preferably a frangible connection is provided to allow separation of the overlapped portion of the first side wall panel from the erected container. This connection may comprise one or more lines of weakness e.g. perforations. The line(s) of weakness may be provided in the first side wall panel, but in the preferred embodiment, they are formed at least in part in one or more adjacent side wall panels. Preferably, the lines of weakness extend at an angle across the adjacent side walls.
The overlapped, removable part of the first side wall panel may be attached to the residual part of the first side wall panel by a frangible connection, e.g. a frangible bridge of material which helps maintain the integrity of the first side wall panel during manufacture and handling but which can easily be broken to during opening of the container.
In a preferred embodiment, the blank is further provided with top closure flaps hingedly attached to the top edges of the other side wall panels. Preferably they are attached about frangible hinge lines such that the top closure flaps of the container may be removed together with the second flap so as to produce an open topped tray.
As discussed above, the second side wall flap is folded over the inner surface of the first side wall panel to close the opening therein. Preferably, the second flap is adhesively secured to the first side wall panel in that configuration. This is particularly advantageous in embodiments intended for machine erection where it maintains the second flap in position against the first side wall panel.
In one embodiment, the second flap is formed with a detachable end portion which is adhesively secured to the inner surface of the first side wall panel below the opening defined therein. In such an arrangement the detachable portion of the second flap will be left attached to the first side wall panel when the second flap is eventually removed from behind the first side wall panel.
Preferably, however, the second flap is adhesively secured to the portion of the first side wall panel which is removable with it from the container, as this facilitates simultaneous removal of the parts.
In order to improve the adhesive bond between the second flap and the overlapped portion of the first side wall panel, the first flap may narrow in width towards its upper end, leaving enlarged areas around it for attachment to the second flap. Most preferably the first flap tapers towards the upper edge of the first side wall panel.
The invention also extends to a partially erected blank in accordance with the invention and a container erected from a blank in accordance with the invention.
In broad terms it also extends to a container comprising a plurality of side wall panels, a first of said side wall panels having an opening defined therein, a first flap released from said opening and folded over to form a part of the top of the container, a second flap hingedly attached to the top of said first side wall panel and rotated so as to lie behind said first side wall panel and at least partially cover the opening in the first side wall panel and overlap a portion of said first side wall panel surrounding said opening, said second flap and said portion of said side wall panel which it overlaps being removable together from the container.
The container may include any of the preferred features of the invention discussed above.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying figures in which: Figure 1 shows a blank in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 shows the blank of Figure 1, partially erected; Figure 3 shows a container erected from the blank of Figures 1 and 2; Figure 4 shows the container of Figure 3 partially opened; and Figure 5 shows the container of Figure 3 fully opened.
With reference to Figures 1 and 2, a blank 2 of paperboard, cardboard or other foldable sheet material comprises side wall panels 4, 6,8,10 and a glue strip 12 hingedly attached in line. Respective bottom closure flaps 14 are attached to the bottom edges of the respective side wall panels 4, 6,8,10. Top closure flaps 16, 18, are attached to three of the side wall panels 4,8,10 as will be described in greater detail below.
A first side wall panel 6 comprises an opening 22 (best seen in Figure 3) defined within a perimeter 24. The upper portion 26 of the opening 22 is filled by a first flap 28 which extends to the top edge 30 of the first side wall panel 6. The lower portion 32 of the opening 22 is not filled by the first flap 28.
The upper parts of the perimeter 24 and the first flap 28 are formed by a pair of cut lines 34 which converge towards the top edge 30 of the first side wall panel 6.
These lines 34 define sub-panels 36 on either side of the upper part of the first side wall panel 6.
Lower parts of the perimeter 24 and the first flap 28 are defined by vertical cut lines 38 which extend to the lower edge 40 of the first flap 28. Bridges of material 42 are provided across the vertical cut lines 38 to assist in maintaining the first flap 28 in the opening 22 during the early stages of erection of the container.
Bridges of material may also be provided in the converging cut lines 34 if necessary.
The sub-panels 36 are attached to the U-shaped portion section 44 of the first side wall panel 6 surrounding the opening 22 by one or more bridges of material 46 spanning arcuate cut lines 48 formed in the first side wall panel 6. These bridges 48 assist in maintaining the integrity of the first side wall panel during transit.
The blank further comprises a second flap 50 attached to the top edge 30 of the first side wall panel 6.
The second flap 50 comprises a finger opening 52 and crease lines 54 extending from the finger opening 52 to the top edge 30 of the first side wall panel 6. The second flap 50 further includes parallel fold lines 56, 58 spaced from the flap's upper edge 60.
The second flap 50 is sized such that when folded downwardly through 180 to lie against the inner surface of the blank, it will completely cover the opening 22 and such that its upper edge 60 generally abuts the underlying base closure flap 14.
The blank 2 further comprises a pair of angled lines of weakness 62 which extend from the upper edge of the arcuate lines of weakness 48 formed in the first side wall panel 6. These lines of weakness 62 extend to further lines of weakness 64 which hingedly attach the top closure flaps 16, 18 to the side wall panels 4, 8 respectively. The top closure flap 20 is attached to the side wall panel 10 by a further line of weakness 64.
To erect a container from the blank 2 of Figure 1, the second flap 50 is folded inwardly such that it overlies the inner surface of the front wall panel 6. As the first flap 26 is joined to the second flap 50 it will be rotated upwardly through 180 at the same time. The blank 2 then takes the appearance generally as shown in Figure 2 with the second flap 50 closing the opening 22 and the first flap 28 upstanding from the top edge of the first side wall panel 6 and generally in line with the top closure flaps 16, 18, 20. This folding is preferably effected before the blank 2 is erected into a container, although this is not essential.
Where this folding is effected prior to erection of the container, it is preferred that the second flap 50 is adhesively secured to the front wall panel 6. Preferably this is done by applying adhesive between the second flap 50 and the sub-panels 36 of the first side wall panel 6. Alternatively or additionally, adhesive can be applied in other areas of the blank, for example towards its upper edge 60.
When the blank has been glued in this manner, it can be shipped to an end user for machine erection and filling. Alternatively it can be partially erected into a tubular blank which can then be erected by the end user into a container.
To complete erection of the container, the side walls 4, 6, 8, 10 of the blank 2 are folded in and secured in a tubular configuration by the glue tab 12. The bottom closure flaps 14 are then folded in and glued or taped in a conventional manner, whereafter the container may be filled through its open top. The container is then closed by folding flaps 20 and 28 inwardly over the top of the container and then folding over and gluing or taping flaps 16 and 18 in position. The closed container then appears as in Figure 3.
In order to open the container, a user places his or her finger through the finger opening 52 and pulls the second flap 50 outwardly. This breaks the bridge of material 46 on either side of the opening 22. The fold lines 54, 56, 58 allow the second flap 50 to deform as it is being pulled through the opening 22, thereby facilitating this action. The continued pulling of the second flap 50 then breaks the lines of weakness 62 in the side wall panels 4, 8 as shown in Figure 4. Continued pulling of the panel backwardly will then break the lines of weakness thereby allowing the top 70 to be completely removed from the container leaving a tray 72 as shown in Figure 5.
It will be appreciated that the description above is of a preferred embodiment of the invention only and that variations thereto may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.
