Abstract
A windlass key suitable for operating locks on a canal system comprises a hub 1 and several shafts 2 and knobs 3 allowing hand over band operation by one or two persons. The shafts may be extendible (fig 5) or foldable (fig 6) for storage. The hub 1 may slide onto a square section shaft (4 Fig 4) which may form part of a rack and pinion (5 fig 4) to lift or lower a paddle (6 fig 4) to allow water out of the locks on the canal system. The hub may include two differently sized holes (fig 7) to operate differently sized shafts.
Description

WiNDLASS KEY 1 The concept of this key is to make operating the paddle
gear on the British inland Waterways easier allowing two people to operate the same paddle Fig 3 It can be turned without back movement, so can be used by persons with back problems
