Abstract

An armour arrangement comprising inner and outer electromagnetic plates 1, 4, fire retardant foam layer 3 sandwiched there between, and outer shell 6 and an explosive charge 5. In use when outer shell is punctured it acts as a trigger and competes an electric circuit, detonating electrical charge 5. This in turn causes magnetic plate 4 to move and breaks a seal surrounding foam layer 4, allowing the foam 4 to be expelled as a fire retardant. The outer magnetic plate 4 is held in place via the connecting rods 2 to allow protection against secondary explosions .Fixing brackets 7 allow the arrangement to be connected to vehicle or the like. The required power supply may be an internal or an external source. The arrangement can be manually triggered if required and is also described as being used in association with a remote control. Plates 1, 4 may alternatively be made from ceramic, steel or a composite material.

Description

I)ESCRIPI ION

Background

The invention relates to enhanced armour prc)tection for ehides and oilier locations due to the increasing use of shaped explosive charges and small arms lire against vehicles throw.thoui the world which has led to numerous casualties and litaliiics.

The device is designed to overcome the eliecis ol' shaped explosive charges. small arms fire. proximity land mines and other blast and weapons clicis against vehicles.

buildings and static defences. [he device is lightweight and ovcrconies issues of weight that have hampered armour deployment to vehicles, buildings and static dcInccs.

Statement of Invention

Time overall aim of the device is to minimise on.asualties in suit skinned vehicles and give enhanced protection to armoured vehicles. The device is designed to be sell activating on breach of the outer shelL but multiple devices can he layered and linked to create a larger blast shield to help cope with shrapnel om' multiple attacks.

See figure 1 which details the parts of the device The device works by the puncture of the outer shell (6) completing an electrical circuit that initiates a shaped explosive charge (5) to explode outwards from the outer magnetic plate (4). At the same time an electrical circuit is completed that powers the magnets creating the same polarity in both magnets Ibreing the outer magnetic late away from the fixed inner magnetic plate (1) at high speed. this breaks the seal on (lie lire retardant loam (3) which expands across the area to extinguish any lire created by the initial blast and the shaped charge within the device. The total cflxt is to neutralise the blast with the shaped charge. then deflect any large fragnients vitli the outer magnetic armoured plate and extinguish any fires with the lire retardant t'o;im.

The outer magnetic armoured plate is held in position b the connector (2) and then acts to deflect small arms tire or secondary explosions utilising the magnetic fields to absorb any impact shock. The Device is fixed to the vehicle or structure ia the lixing brackets (7). The device can also be triggered remutel by lixed wire or radii) control thus adding a limited offensive capability against a suicide bomber. * .
