Abstract
243,854. Hauser, M. Oct. 9, 1924. Resistance materials. -Resistances are made by embedding a plastic resistance material in a plastic ceramic material and burning the whole in a kiln. The resistance material may consist of various mixtures of silicon, natural or artificial graphite, clay, boric acid, feldspar, coke, soot, kaolin, silicon carbide, silicates, borates, and substances that carbonize at a high temperature. The materials are powdered and made into a plastic mass with water, isinglass, tar, petrol or other mineral or organic oils. The conductivity of the mass may be increased by the addition of powdered copper bronze or other metal or reducible metal oxide. The plastic covering material may consist of porcelain, stoneware, or clay which may be covered with a non-porous layer of glaze or enamel. Fig. 1 shows a rod-shaped heating element before firing. The ends of the ceramic sheath 1 are closed as shown at 3 in order to protect the resistance material 2 against the oxidizing action of the fire. After firing the ends 3 are ground off. The ends of the sheath are enlarged and filled with a conducting material 5 of less -specific resistance than the material 2 in order to reduce the temperature at the ends. Instead of being in the, form of a rod the heater may be shaped as a ring, disc &c. Fig. 3 shows a heater in which a central resistance element 12 branches off at the lower end into two helices 13, 14 having terminal pieces 15, 16. The ceramic sheath S is ground down at the upper end after firing to expose the connections. Fig. 4 shows a heater in the form of a cylindrical shell. Fig. 5 shows a vessel made of ceramic material in which is embedded a resistance element 22 which mav be in the form of a rod or a number of concentric circular rings.
