Abstract

A coat hook 1 is attachable to each of the upright surfaces at the top end of a coat stand. Each coat hook 1 comprises a detachable hook part 2 and a fixing part 3 designed to enable the detachable hook part 2 to be slidably attached to the coat stand without the need for tools whilst allowing the coat stand 5 and coat hooks 1 to be easily packed in a flat package for transport. Each upright surface of the coat stand 5 has two identical keyhole recesses 4. The recesses 4 are provided to engage the fixing part 3 of the coat hook, so as to enable the detachable hook part 2 to be attached to each upright surface of the coat stand. The fixing part 3 is designed to be fixed to the coat stand and to attach the detachable hook part 2 to the fixing part 3 by sliding engagement. Furthermore the fixing part 3 has two projecting parts 9 slidably engageable within recesses 4 in the upright surface of the coat stand.

Description

Coat Hook This invention relates to coat hooks, and is concerned more

particularly, but not exclusively, with coat hooks for fitting to coat stands.

It is a common practice for coat stands to be supplied in flat pack form, so that the user has to assemble the stand before use. During such assembly it is generally required to attach coat hooks to such stands so as to allow coats to be suspended upon them. There are many types of coat hooks available commercially, but the majority of them have the drawback that the user must tighten screws or bolts to secure the coat hooks to the coat stand. The need to fasten screws or bolts during assembly of the coat stand is undesirable and can possibly compromise the structure of the coat stand in long-term use.

It is an object of the invention to provide a coat hook that can be fixed to a coat stand in a straightforward manner.

According to the present invention there is provided a coat hook comprising a fixing part adapted to be fixed to an upright surface; and a detachable hook part that is engageable by sliding with the fixing part.

The hook part may therefore be attached to the fixing part without the uses of screws or bolts.

In a preferred embodiment of the invention the fixing part has at least one formation for engaging a receiving part on the upright surface, and the receiving part is a recess in the upright surface, the formation being a projection for engaging within the recess. This enables the fixing part to be attached to the upright surface without the uses of screws or bolts.

In order that the invention may be more fully understood, a preferred embodiment in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the top of the coat stand and the coat hook, and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the top of the coat stand and the fixing part of the coat hook, the fixing part being shown detached from the recesses in the coat stand.

Referring to Figure 1, the top end of the coat stand 5 has four upright surfaces at right angles to one another. A coat hook I is attachable to each of the upright surfaces at the top end of the coat stand 5. Each coat hook 1 comprises a detachable hook part 2 and a fixing part 3 designed to enable the detachable hook part 2 to be attached to the coat stand 5 without the need for tools whilst allowing the coat stand 5 and coat hooks I to be easily packed in a flat package for transport. The detachable hook part 2 of one of the coat hooks 1 is shown detached from the coat stand 5. The coat hook 1 is preferably made of graphite but it can also be made of any material that is rigid, hardwearing and durable for long-term use.

Each upright surface of the coat stand 5 has two identical keyhole recesses 4. The recesses 4 are provided to engage the fixing part 3 of the coat hook, so as to enable the detachable hook part 2 to be attached to each upright surface of the coat stand 5. The fixing part 3 of the coat hook 1 is shown engaged with the keyhole recesses 4 of the coat stand 5. The fixing part 3 is designed to be fixed to the coat stand 5 and to attach the detachable hook part 2 to the fixing part 3 by sliding engagement.

Figure 2 illustrates additional features of the fixing part 3 not shown in Figure 1. The fixing part 3 has two projecting parts 9 that each comprise an outer portion 9a and an inner portion 9b. The outer portion 9a is circular and has a width (diameter) that is greater than the width of the inner portion 9b. Each projecting part 9 engages with a corresponding recess 4 in the upright surface of the coat stand 5. Each of the recesses 4 is provided with a pair of flanges 4a to engage the outer section 9a and the main body of the fixing part 3. The inner portion 9b advantageously has a width that is less than the width of the main body of the fixing part 3. Although the recess 4 is shown as keyhole shaped, it will be appreciated that the recess 4 can be of any shape provided that it can engage the projecting part 9 of the fixing part 3 and has flanges 4a that engage with the outer portion 9b of the projecting part 9.

The fixing part 3 also has a pair of flanges 8. The flanges 8 engage with edges 7 formed in a channel 6 that runs approximately three quarters of the distance along the side of the detachable hook part 2, and this arrangement enables sliding engagement of the detachable hook part 2 and the fixing part 3. The detachable hook part 2 is prevented from sliding completely off the fixing part 3 by the top end of the channel 6 engaging with the top end of the fixing part 3.

In order to secure the coat hook 1 to the coat stand 5, the fixing part 3 is firstly fixed to the upright surface of the coat stand 5 by pushing the projecting parts 9 of the fixing part 3 into the corresponding recesses 4, and then sliding the fixing part 3 downwards until the bottom ends of the recesses 4 prevent the projecting parts 9 from travelling any further downwards. The detachable hook part 2 is secured on the fixing part 3 by sliding the detachable hook part 2 over the fixing part 3 until the top end of the fixing part 3 engages the top part of the channel 6.

Various modifications can be made to the design of the coat hook without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the recesses can be formed on the fixing part instead of on the coat stand, and the projecting parts can be formed on the coat stand. In a further variant the coat hook may comprise a detachable hook part formed with flanges and a fixing part having a channel to engage the flanges. Furthermore the fixing part could be secured to the coat stand by screws or bolts instead of utilising recesses in the coat stand to engage the fixing part. In this case the coat stand would be supplied with the fixing parts of the coat hooks already screwed or bolted on to it.

During assembly of the stand, the user would attach the detachable hook to the stand by simply sliding the detachable hook part over the fixing part. The inner portion and outer portion of the projecting part and the recess can have any shape and surface area, provided that one of the dimensions of the outer portion is greater than the corresponding dimension of the inner portion to enable engagement of the projecting part within the recess. Any number of projecting parts and recesses may be incorporated within the same coat hook.

Claims

CLAIMS: 1. A coat hook comprising a fixing part adapted to be fixed to

an upright surface, and a detachable hook part that is engageable by sliding with the fixing part.

2. A coat hook according to claim 1, wherein the fixing part has at least one formation for engaging a receiving part on the upright surface.

3. A coat hook according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the receiving part is a recess in the upright surface and the formation is a projection for engaging within the recess.

4. A coat hook according to claim 3, wherein the projection comprises an inner portion, and an outer portion having a dimension greater than the corresponding dimension of the inner portion for engaging within the recess.

5. A coat hook according to claim 4, wherein the recess has flanges for engaging the outer portion.

6. A coat hook according to claim 4 or 5, wherein said dimension of the inner portion is less than the corresponding dimension of the fixing part.

7. A coat hook according to any one of claims 4 to 6, wherein the outer portion has a circular cross-section.

8. A claim according to any one of claims 3 to 7, wherein the recess is keyhole shaped.

9. A coat hook according to any preceding claim, wherein the fixing part has a pair of flanges.

10. A coat hook according to claim 4, wherein the hook part includes a channel, and the flanges fit within edge portions of the channel when the hook part is engaged with the fixing part.

11. A coat hook according to any preceding claim, wherein the fixing part and the hook part are made of graphite.

12. A coat hook according to claim 1, wherein the fixing part is formed with holes for fixing the fixing part to the upright surface.

13. A coat hook according to claim 12, wherein the fixing part is adapted to be fixed to the upright surface by screws extending through the holes.

14. A coat hook substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows CLAIMS: 1. A coat hook comprising a fixing part adapted to be fixed to an upright surface, and a detachable hook part that is engageable by sliding with the fixing part, wherein the fixing part has at least one formation for engaging a receiving part on the upright surface.

2. A coat hook according to claim 1, wherein the receiving part is a recess in the upright surface and the formation is a projection for engaging within the recess.

3. A coat hook according to claim 2, wherein the projection comprises an inner portion, and an outer portion having a dimension greater than the corresponding dimension of the inner portion for engaging within the recess.

4. A coat hook according to claim 3, wherein the recess has flanges for engaging the outer portion.

5. A coat hook according to claim 3 or 4, wherein said dimension of the inner portion is less than the corresponding dimension of the fixing part.

6. A coat hook according to any one of claims 3 to 5, wherein the outer portion has a circular cross-section.

7. A claim according to any one of claims 2 to 6, wherein the recess is keyhole shaped.

8. A coat hook according to any preceding claim, wherein the fixing part has a pair of flanges.

9. A coat hook according to claim 4, wherein the hook part includes a channel, and the flanges fit within edge portions of the channel when the hook part is engaged with the fixing part.

10. A coat hook according to any preceding claim, wherein the fixing part and the hook part are made of graphite.

11. A coat hook substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
