Also disclosed is a cleansing wipe impregnated with the skin application.

Description

Skin Application

Field of the Invention

This invention relates to skin creams and lotions and in particular to skin creams and lotions that do not contain liquid paraffin or other skin sensitizers.

Background of the Invention

Liquid paraffin or mineral oil is widely using in cosmetics as a moisturising agent and emulsifying agent. It is also widely used in creams and lotions in the pharmaceutical industry for both its moisturising and emulsifying properties.

Liquid paraffin is a by-product derived from crude oil. When used on the skin it inhibits the skin's ability to breathe and exchange moisture with the atmosphere, thereby disrupting the skin's natural immune barrier. Liquid paraffin also blocks skin pores and impedes the skin's ability to eliminate toxins. This has been shown to cause folliculitis and can promote acne and other skin disorders. Liquid paraffin also restricts the abilit) of the skin to perform its usual function of excreting and absorbing substances. Restriction of this process slows down the skin function and normal cell development causing the skin to prematurely age.

All crude oil contains cancer causing Polccic Aromatic H drocarbons (PAHs).

Any mineral oil derivative, such as liquid paraffin, can also be contaminated with PAHs.

The body is not able to excrete any absorbed liquid paraffin, so it is accumulated by the body over time. The full effects of this on the body are not vet known.

Recent e idence has looked at the possible health concerns associated with use of liquid paraffin in skin products. The unwanted side effects are likely to be magnified in children under the age of three due to their relatively larger surface are to volume ratio.

Governments in India, China and Taiwan have all recently raised concerns about the use of liquid paraffin in baby products because of the aforementioned carcinogenic properties.

In addition to these health concerns, liquid paraffin is a derivative of oil, which is becoming increasingis more expensive to produce and is graduall becoming a rare commodity, so alternatives to liquid paraffin will need to be found.

Other chemical additives and fragrances are routinely used in skin creams and cosmetics. Mans' of these chemicals are known skin irritants. The problems associated with some common chemical additives are outlined below: Hvdroxvbenzoates, (also known as parabens) are routinely used as preservatives.

These compounds arc known to cause allergic reactions and have been found in breast tumours.

Polvsorbates are routinely used as emulsifiers. These can be contaminated with clioxane which is known to have carcinogenic effects in rodents.

Triethanolamine is routinely used as a pH adjuster and emulsifying agent in creams and cosmetics. Triethanolamine is known to cause allergic reactions including eye problems and dry skin and also has been shown to have carcinogenic activity in rats.

Lanolin is routinely used in creams and cosmetics. Lanolin is produced by wool-bearing animals such as sheep can be contaminated with chemicals used on the animals such as pesticides and insecticides.

Many fragrances used in creams and cosmetics are known to have toxic or carcinogenic effects.

1midazolidinl urea is routinely used as a preservative. This compound is associated with adverse skin reactions and has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals.

Butvlated hydroxvanisole is an anti oxidant routinely used as a preservative in cosmetic formulations. This compound is a known allergen and has been shown to cause cancerous turnours in test animals.

Sorbic acid and its derivatives are routinely used as preservatives. These compounds are known irritants and skin sensitizers.

It is known to include natural oils such as jojoba oil, wheatgerm oil and palm oil in skin creams, as these ingredients all have beneficial properties for the skin. However, these ingredients are usually present in very small amounts, usually less than 1% by weight. Before now it has been necessary to combine these ingredients with chemical additives in order to bind the cream together to make a non-greasy cream suitable for application to the skin.

The present invention is concerned with skin creams and lotions that do not contain liquid paraffin or any compounds that are known to be skin irritants.

Surprisingl', low concentrations of sodium silicate in combination with a range of natural oils have been found to provide excellent emulsifying properties in compositions for application to the skin.

Summary of the Invention

One aspect of the invention provides an irritant-free skin application as specified in Claim 1 A second aspect of the invention provides a skin cleansing wipe as specified in Claim 64.

Preferred aspects of the invention are specified in the claims dependent on Claims I and 64.

The invention also relates to methods of reducing wrinkles, methods of dela)ing the Onset of ageing and methods of moisturising skin.

Skin applications include but are not limited to creams, lotions and sprays. The ingredients in all the skin applications of the invention are all not known to be skin irritants, rendering the creams irritant-free. For the purpose of this invention we shall define skin irritants to include any additive known to cause skin sensitisation or skin irritation, including liquid paraffin, chemical fragrances, hsdroxvbcnzoates (parabens), polysorbates, triethanolamine, lanolin, imidazolidinyl urea, butvlated hvdroxvaisole, sorbic acid, beeswax, benzvl alcohol, butylated hvdroxvtoluene, cetostearvi alcohol, chlorocresol, chlorhexidine, edetic acid, ethvlenediamine, N-(3-Chloroalll)bexaminium chloride (quaternium 15), phenox)ethanol, propylene glycol, sodium metabisulphte, triclosan, para-anisyl alcohol, benzyl benzoate, benzvl cinnamate, benzvl salicylate, cinnamic aldeh',de, cinnam)! alcohol, citral, citronellol, coumarin, eugenol, farnesol, geraniol, isoeugenol, linalol, irnidurea, isopropyl palmitate and any skin sensitizers listed in the EU Cosmetics Directive.

The irritant-free skin applications of the invention comprise the natural oils ojoba, wheatgerm and palm oil, in significant amounts.

The chemical structure of jojoba oil mimics that of sebum oil which is produced naturally b' the skin. This allows the oil to be very easily absorbed by the skin.

Wheargerm oil is rich in vitamin E and acts as a natural preservative. It is very good for dry skin as it can relive itching and dryness. Palm oil is extracted from oil palm trees. It is a natural source of beta-carotene and vitamin E. Aloe vera gel is extracted from the leaf of the aloe vera plant. Aloe vera has well known healing and soothing properties.

Sodium silicate acts as both an emulsifier, and also provides an exfoliating action, which removes las ers of thickened skin, thereby allowing the moisturising oils in the skin application to penetrate the skin more easily.

Alkoline SLTM and Alkoline GCTM are both non-irritant, naturally derived emulsiflers supplied by Karlshamns AB. Alkoline SLTM is Sodium stearoyl lactylate, and Alkoline GCTM is Hydrogenated vegetable glycerides citrate.

Non-irritant preservatives include salicydic acid and grapeseed extract. Salicydic acid is not recommended for use in products for young children. Grapeseed extract is the preferred preservative for skin applications intended for young children.

Using a combination of sodium silicate, natural oils and non-irritant preservatives, the resulting skin application is a smooth low viscosity cream or lotion which is less occlusive in nature compared to compositions comprising liquid paraffin, thereby allowing the skin to breathe' more easily. Creams and lotions have excellent moisturising effects and produce minimal irritation.
