Abstract

A pet leash comprises a housing containing a retractable lead 3 and an electronic device such as a radio 9, torch 10, hand warmer 11 or personal alarm 12 powered by a rechargeable battery that is charged by the movement of the retractable lead as it is extended from and retracted into the housing. The lead may be locked in position by pressing button 5. The housing may have a handle.

Description

I

PET LEAD DEVICE

The invention relates to a pet lead of the type that includes a retractable lead equipped, with a radio, torch, hand warmer and personal alarm in a case of portable size, either singularly or in combination.

Retractable pet leads with associated electrically powered devices exist, but suffer from the disadvantages associated with battery-operated devices. They run out of charge and the batteries then need either replacing or recharging. The replacement of batteries is both costly and environmentally unsustainable.

An object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a pet lead with radio, torch, hand warmer or personal attack alarm which will never need to have batteries changed or recharged.

Accordingly this invention provides a pet lead device comprising an extendable lead to allow a pet to advance, the lead being retracted to take up any slack in the lead when the pet stops or slows down, the device also comprising a radio, torch, hand warmer or personal alarm powered from a rechargeable source connected to a generator operation of which is effected as the extendable lead is extended when a pet advances as aforesaid. Conveniently, the rechargeable source is a battery housed in the device. The device preferably comprises a case enclosing the retractable lead and the generator. The case conveniently includes a handle for ease of use, the case preferably being made from metal, plastic or a combination of these materials.

An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a side view of the device; Figure 2 shows a rear view of the device; Figure 3 shows a perspective view of the device; Figure 4 shows a section view of the device; As shown in Figure 1, the device comprises a main body I in the form of a casing which houses a drum 2 around which a lead 3 is wound, a return spring 4 is provided for retracting the lead 3 and taking up any slack. The shape of the main body 1 is that of a rectangle with a sloping left hand side, with a chamfer at the top left corner and a large radius on the lower right hand corner. The lead 3 exits the main body I through a hole near the top of the front face. A handle is formed at the rear of the main body 1, in the form of an elongated slot. The drum 2 and therefore lead 3 can be locked in place using a button 5 at the top of the rear face of the main body 1.

As shown in Figure 4, in accordance with the invention, a rotary powered generation mechanism 6 is linked using gears to a one way directional bearing or ratchet mechanism 7 and then to the drum 2 in such a way that the rotary powered generation mechanism 6 is only engaged when the lead 3 is extending and not when it is retracting. This energy is stored in a battery 8 which is then used to power the radio 9, torch 10, hand warmer 11 or personal attack alarm 12.

Claims (1)

  1.
Claims 3 1. A pet lead device comprising an extendable lead to allow a
pet to advance, the lead being retracted to take up any slack in the lead when the pet stops or slows down, the device also comprising a radio, torch, hand warmer or personal alarm powered from a rechargeable source connected to a generator operation of which is effected as the extendable lead is extended when a pet advances as aforesaid.

2. A pet lead device according to Claim 1 characterised in that the rechargeable source is a battery housed in the device.

3. A pet lead device according to Claim 2 characterised in that the device comprises a case enclosing the retractable lead and the generator.

4. A pet lead device according to Claim 3 characterised in that the case includes a handle for ease of use.

5. A pet lead device according to either one of Claims 3 and 4 characterised in that the case is made from metal, plastic or a combination of these materials.

6. A pet lead device substantially as herein described with reference to the drawings.
