Abstract

A dog lead comprises a body 10 providing a handle 18a retractable lead 14 extending from a front end of the body 10 and torch 20 mounted along the top of the body 10. In use the light beam from the torch (20) is directed forwardly above the lead, to illuminate the ground ahead. <IMAGE>

Description

DOG LEAD DEVICE This invention relates to a dog lead device.
It is a common requirement for dog owners to take their dog for a walk at night. However, there is often inadequate illumination. There have been various attempts to deal with this problem, for example providing luminous markers on the dog collar or on the dog lead: this makes the animal's position visible to the owner and other road users, but does not provide illumination for the ground ahead.
I have now devised a dog lead device which overcomes these problems and provides effective illumination of the ground ahead, when in use.
In accordance with this invention there is provided a dog lead device comprising a body providing a handle, a lead extending from a front end of the body, and a torch mounted in or to the body portion and arranged to direct a light beam forwardly.
In use of this dog lead device, the light beam from the torch illuminates the ground ahead. Preferably the torch is positioned above the point on the body from which the lead extends.
Preferably the body houses a real around which the lead is wound, the reel being provided with a return spring for retracting the lead to take up any slack in the lead between the device and the dog. Preferably the handle is formed along a rear end of the body. Preferably the torch extends forwardly along the top of the body.
An embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is a side elevation of a dog lead device in accordance with this invention; FIGURE 2 is a view of the rear end of the dog lead device of Figure 1; FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of the dog lead device; and FIGURE 4 is a similar view of the device when its torch is switched on.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a dog lead device which comprises a body 10 in the form of a casing which houses a reel 12 around which a lead 14 is wound. The reel 12 is provided with a return spring for retracting the lead 14, to take up any slack in the lead between the body 10 and the dog. The body 10 is of generally flat, trapezium shape and the lead 14 extends through an aperture 15 in the rearwardlysloping front end wall of the body 10, the aperture 15 being closer to the top edge of the body 10 than its bottom edge.
The forwardly-sloping rear end of the body 10 is formed with an elongate slot 16, to provide a handle or grip 18. A button 19 is mounted in the body 10 immediately above the handle 18, and can be depressed to lock the reel 12 against rotation.
In accordance with the invention, a torch 20 is positioned along the top edge of the body 10, to direct a beam of light B (Figure 4) forwardly. The torch may be housed in an upper portion of the body 10, or as shown it may comprise its own casing mounted (preferably removably) to the top edge of the main body 10. The torch casing houses batteries 22 and is provided at its rear end with an on/off switch 24.
It will be appreciated that, in use, the torch beam B is directed forwardly above the lead 12, to illuminate the ground ahead in an effective manner.
