Abstract

The aircraft comprises two wings which are vertically displaced. The fuselage on which the wings are mounted may be in the form of a tube or canister from which a portion has been removed to accommodate the wings when folded. The aircraft may be a tube-launched Unmanned Air Vehicle, or an aircraft intended to be stored in close proximity to other aircraft.

<p>Description</p>
<p>Folding wings for UAV's and Manned Aircraft The invention of the particular folding wing mechanism and configuration was initiated by the design criteria for a tube launched Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV). The requirement calls for a UAV for the purpose of ground surveillance to be launched from a tube or canister small enough for a single solider to carry without hindering there</p>
<p>performance on the battlefield.</p>
<p>The usual approach to this would be keep the wings with the same relative vertical location and simply fold them. This method although achieving the folding does so at a cost of volume. The resulting tube or canister is large as both wings are stacked away from the diameter line of the container.</p>
<p>To solve this problem, the location of the wings was looked at from a basis of pure storage. l'he configuration that resulted was to alter the relative vertical location of the wings, having one wing high and the other low on the fuselage cross-section, and removing some of the fuselage behind the wing root.</p>
<p>The implication on the actual aircraft with this configuration is that the main storage area for items like; avionics, fuel/batteries and cargo is not reduced by a large amount. The reason for this is that the only space taken away by sinking the wings is the "wasted" space that would otherwise by empty.</p>
<p>Fig I shows the deployed configuration of the wings, clearly visible is the vertical displacement of the wings.</p>
<p>By referring to fig 2, it can be easily seen that the folded aircraft can be located into a simple circular tube of a diameter little larger than the fuselage diameter.</p>
<p>The primary application for this invention was a tube launched UAV; this has been brought to proof-of-concept level and will be marketed as soon as intellectual property protection is in place.</p>
