Abstract

Actuating by liquid pressure; freepiston pumps; valve-gear; valves and valve seats, arrangement of. - The cylinder of a liquid meter containing a free piston actuated by the pressure of the liquid to be measured has an inlet and discharge valve controlling each end, the two open valves being first closed and the two closed valves being then opened by the piston of a relay cylinder the valves of which are reversed by the action of the measuring cylinder piston immediately prior to the end of each stroke. The slide valve 12 of the relay cylinder 11 is actuated bv collars 14 on the piston rod 1<b> of the measuring cylinder 1 engaging a sleeve 15. The pressure in the supply pipe 30 then rises and opens the loaded valve 33. the pressure in the air vessel 31 maiutainina the movement of the relay piston after the valve 32 closes. The piston-rod 18 is connected by linkage to rockshafts 20. 26 actuating cross-bars 22, 29 which engage collars 5<a>, 8<a>, and 6a. 9<a> on the valve stems so arranged that the valves 6, 8 close before the valves 5, 9 open, and vice versa. The liquid pressure and the valve springs both tend to close the valves. One Provisional Specification describes other means for actuating the valves. Each pair of valves has a rocking beam to each end of which a valve stem is attached through a connection allowing a small amount of lost motion. Arms on each rock-shaft are connected by a link which is actuated through a reciprocating cam by the relay piston.
