Abstract
A mattress includes at least four superposed layers of springs, each spring in each layer of springs having a diameter which is greater than the height of the spring. This allows the spring count of the mattress to be varied. Each of the springs is preferably a pocketed spring, and there may be layers of filling material between the layers of springs. The springs may be made of steel, aluminium or aluminium alloy.
Description

* 2433883

MATTRESSES

This invention relates to mattresses and is particularly concerned with the spring count' of mattresses.

Mattresses are usually formed of a plurality of springs or spring units with or without filling material, and in order to vaiy the spring count' of the mattress, the spring units, consisting of a plurality of springs -pocketed, non-pocketed, or a combination thereof-are thickened or made larger, and it is thought that if the springs were made smaller than normal, their numbers could be increased in order to enable the spring count' of the mattress to be varied.

According to the present invention, there is provided a mattress including at least four superposed layers of springs, each spring in each layer of springs having a diameter which is greater than the height of the spring.

Preferably, there will be five or more such layers of springs, each spring having a diameter greater than its height.

Each spring in each layer of springs will preferably be a pocketed spring, i.e. a spring in a closed pocket of fabric or other suitable material.

The ratio of the diameter to the height of each spring is variable within predetermined parameters.

The mattress may include layers of filling material between the layers of springs, or alternatively lengths of fabric or other suitable material may be located between said layers.

In order that the invention may be more readily understood, embodiments thereof will now be described, by way of example only, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is diagrammatic cross-section through a mattress according to the invention; and Figure 2 shows a variation thereof.

Referring to the drawings, and firstly to Figure 1, there is shown a mattress, indicated generally be reference numeral 2, comprising four layers 4, 6, 8, and 10 of springs, the springs 12 in each layer of springs each having a diameter greater than its height.

Each of the springs 12 is a pocketed spring, i.e. a spring within a closed pocket of fabric or other suitable material. Alternatively, the springs may be non-pocketed springs. Or indeed, each layer of springs may be a combination of such springs.

The ratio of the diameter to height of each of said springs will be set within predetermined parameters, such ratio probably being not less than 1.5. For example, the diameter of each spring may be 80mm and the height of each spring may be 53mm, it being appreciated that such dimensions are given as examples only, and are not to be interpreted as limiting in any way.

Between each layer of springs is a sheet 14 of fabric or other suitable material, similar sheets 16 and 18 being applied to the upper layer 4 of springs and the lower layer 10 of springs, it being appreciated that such sheets of fabric or other suitable may be omitted if preferred.

Referring now to Figure 2, this shows an arrangement similar to that shown in Figure 1, but in this embodiment there are shown five layers 20, 22, 24, 26, and 28 of springs, the springs in each layer of springs each having the same characteristics as regards diameter and height as mentioned earlier in relation to Figure 1.

The layers 20 to 28 of springs have therebetween layers 30, 32, 34, and 36 of filling material, such filling material being, for example foam or any other suitable material. Said layers of springs may be glued to said layers of filling material. Coverings 38 and 40 of fabric or other material are applied to the upper and lower layers 20 and 28 of springs.

The springs in each of the above-described embodiments may, instead of being made conventionally from steel, may instead be made of aluminium or an aluminium alloy, such material lessening the weight of the finished mattress.

The invention thus provides a mattress in which the spring count' of the mattress is variable. By means of the invention, a spring count' of, for example, more than 4,000 may be achieved in respect of a double' mattress and greater if desired, proportionate spring counts' being achievable in respect of king size' and single size' mattresses.

The invention makes it possible to determine a way to create a spring density of at least 1100 springs per square meter of mattress.

It will be appreciated that a mattress according to the invention may include more than five layers of springs -with or without the filling material -and that the embodiment of Figure 1 may include layers of filling material as described with reference to Figure 2.

Finally, the layers of fabric or other suitable material between the layers of springs may be omitted, or such layers may be provided in addition to the layers of filling material.

Claims (1)
-
CLAIMS: 1. A mattress including at least four layers of springs, eachspring in each layer of springs having a diameter which is greater than the height of the spring.

2.
