Description

A GUTTER BRACKET

This invention relates to a gutter bracket.

Gutter brackets for supporting guttering are well known. The gutter brackets are mounted on a support surface. If the support surface is a brick or concrete support surface then a tapping hole has to be drilled into the support surface. Frequently a drill bit effecting the drilling moves away from its intended position and then the drilled tapping hole is in a different place to where it was required. This in turn prevents good straight alignment of gutter brackets with each other.

It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problem.

Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a gutter bracket comprising a body portion for receiving a gutter, a mounting portion which is integrally formed with the body portion and by which the gutter bracket is mounted on a support surface, and fixing means for fixing the mounting portion in position on the support surface; the fixing means being such that it comprises a locking portion for locking against the mounting portion, and at least one fixing aperture for receiving a penetrating member for penetrating the support surface and thereby holding the gutter bracket on the support surface; and the mounting portion and the locking portion being such that the mounting portion is movable vertically with respect to the locking portion whereby the gutter bracket is adjustable vertically against the support surface prior to final tightening of the penetrating member.

The gutter bracket of the present invention is thus able to be adjusted vertically, thereby enabling a plurality of the gutter brackets to be installed along the side of a building in good vertical alignment.

The gutter bracket may be one in which the mounting portion has an adjustment aperture for receiving the locking portion, and in which the adjustment aperture is larger than the locking portion for the purpose of permitting the mounting portion to be movable vertically with respect to the locking portion. The adjustment aperture is preferably a rectangular adjustment aperture which extends vertically in use of the gutter bracket.

Other types of adjustment aperture may be employed if desired.

The gutter bracket may be one in which the locking portion has a single fixing aperture for receiving the penetrating member. In this case, the single fixing aperture may be positioned at a central part of the locking portion such that in use the penetrating member extends through the fixing aperture in the locking portion, through the adjustment aperture in the mounting portion, and into the support surface.

Alternatively, the gutter bracket may be one in which the locking portion has a plurality of the fixing apertures. In this case, the locking portion may have a first fixing aperture for receiving one of the penetrating members, and a pair of second fixing apertures which are positioned one on either side of the first fixing aperture and which are for receiving a pair of the penetrating members, the pair of second fixing apertures being such that their penetrating members extend in use one to either side of the mounting portion.' Advantageously, the gutter bracket is one in which the locking portion and the mounting portion have complementary formations for providing increased grip between the locking portion and the mounting portion.

Preferably, the complementary formations are ridges. Other complementary formations may be employed if desired so that, for example, the complementary formations may be pimples.

The gutter bracket may be manufactured and sold with or without the penetrating member.

Usually the penetrating member will be a screw. The penetrating member could however be another device if desired such for example as a nail.

The gutter bracket will usually be made of the same materials as existing known gutter brackets. Thus the gutter bracket will usually be moulded from a plastics material.

Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first gutter bracket; Figure 2 is an exploded view of the gutter bracket as shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a second gutter bracket; Figure 4 is an exploded view of the gutter bracket shown in Figure 3; Figure 5 shows from another side fixing means forming part of the gutter bracket shown in Figures 3 and 4; and Figure 6 is a section through part of the gutter bracket in use and shows the operation of fixing means forming part of the gutter bracket.

Referring to Figures 1 and 2 there is shown a gutter bracket 2 comprising a body portion 4 for receiving a gutter (not shown). The gutter bracket 2 also comprises a mounting portion 6 which is integrally formed with the body portion 4 and by which the gutter bracket 2 is mounted on a support surface 8.

The gutter bracket 2 further comprises fixing means 10 for fixing the mounting portion 6 in position on the support surface 8. The fixing means is such that it comprises a locking portion 12 for locking against the mounting portion 6. The fixing means 10 also comprises a fixing aperture 14 for receiving a penetrating member 16 for penetrating the support surface 8 and thereby holding the gutter bracket 2 on the support surface 8.

The mounting portion 6 and the locking portion 12 are such that the mounting portion 6 is movable vertically with respect to the locking portion 12. The gutter bracket 2 is thereby adjustable vertically against the support surface 8 prior to final tightening of the penetrating member 16. The available adjustment for the gutter bracket 2 against the support surface 8 is shown in Figure 1 by broken lines and vertical adjustment distance 18. If a hole for the penetrating member 16 should be drilled in the support surface 8 such that the hole finishes up in a place other than where it was intended, then the gutter bracket 2 easily enables required vertical adjustment simply by moving the mounting portion 6 relative to the locking portion 12 when the penetrating member 16 is in the support surface 8 and before the penetrating member 16 has been fully tightened.

As best shown in Figure 2, the mounting portion 6 has an adjustment aperture 20 for receiving the locking portion 12. The adjustment aperture 20 is larger than the locking portion 12 for the purpose of permitting the mounting portion 6 to be movable vertically with respect to the locking portion 12. The adjustment aperture 20 is a rectangular adjustment aperture which extends vertically in use of the gutter bracket as can be appreciated from Figure 2.

The locking portion 12 has a single one of the fixing apertures 14 for receiving the penetrating member 16. The single fixing aperture 14 is positioned at a central part of the locking portion 12 as shown such that in use the penetrating member 16 extends through the fixing aperture 14 in the locking portion 12, through the adjustment aperture 20 in the mounting portion 6, and into the support surface 8.

The locking portion 12 and the mounting portion 6 have complementary formations 22 for providing increased grip between the locking portion and the mounting portion 6. As shown the complementary formations 22 are ridges.

The body portion of the gutter bracket 2 may be of a variety of designs including known designs. As shown, the body portion 4 has beads 24 on which the gutter slides and rests. The body portion 4 also has an integrally formed clip 26 for clipping over the outer edge of the guttering.

The body portion 4 has a clip 28 for clipping over the inner edge of the guttering. The body portion 4 has a strengthening web 30 as shown.

Referring now to Figures 3, 4 and 5 there is shown a gutter bracket 32. Similar parts as in the gutter bracket 2 have been given the same reference numerals for ease of comparison and understanding.

In the gutter bracket 32, fixing means 34 is employed instead of the fixing means 10. The fixing means 34 is such that it has the fixing aperture 14 as a first fixing aperture. The fixing means 34 also has a pair of second fixing apertures 36 which are positioned one on either side of the fixing aperture 14. The second fixing apertures 36 are for receiving a pair of the penetrating members 16. The second fixing apertures 36 are such that their penetrating members 16 extend in use one to either side of the mounting portion 6 as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 5 shows the inside face of the fixing means 34. It will be seen how the apertures 14, 36 are formed in a cylindrical member 38 which are themselves formed in housings 40. Such a construction enables the fixing means 34 to be moulded with a minimum amount of plastics material.

Referring now to Figure 6, there is shown a section through the gutter bracket 2, but the section could equally be a section through the gutter bracket 32. The penetrating member 16 is shown in a waIl 42. The waIl 42 may be of any suitable and appropriate material including brick, concrete or wood. It can be seen that the depth of the locking portion 12 is such that its inner face 44 does not touch the support surface 8 when the penetrating member 16 is fully tightened. This enables the complementary formations 22 to engage fully.

It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the complementary formations 22 may be other than the illustrated ridges. The body portion 4 and the mounting portion 6 may be of a shape other than those shown. The locking portion in the mounting bracket of the present invention could be such that it could alternatively fit over the mounting portion rather than fitting through the mounting portion via the adjustment aperture. The penetrating member 16 can be of a different type of screw to that shown, or it can alternatively be another type of penetrating member such for example as a nail.
