Abstract
A mailbox has first and second openings, both closable by airtight flaps (C), and a combined smoke detector and alarm (E) mounted on the top surface. The detector is preferably activates the alarm automatically upon detecting smoke within the mailbox. The receptacle is preferably made of a flame resistant material.
Description

Fire Resistant Mailbox 2432884 The present invention relates to
mailboxes, and in particular to a fire resistant mailbox.

Because of the increase in the incidence of arson attacks on residential properties, where incendiary devices are put through the mailbox; this invention aims to neutralise the effects of such devices.

The invention consists of a receptacle for use as a mailbox, having two openings, both of which are closable in a substantially gas tight manner by means of flaps. The receptacle also has mounted upon the top surface, a combined smoke detector and alarm, powered by a long life battery I small photo-voltaic cell, which will automatically raise an alarm on the detection of smoke within the receptacle or the hallway in which the receptacle is mounted. This would also give warning of a fire / smoke hazard in what would primarily be the main escape route.

In order that the thinking behind the invention may be more easily understood, a description of the various elements shall follow with reference to the drawings.

The mailbox is designed to be fitted to an external door in place of an existing internal mail flap. It is also assumed that an external mail flap shall be fitted to the door.

The mailbox comprises a rectangular box, mounting vertically on a flush surface door, and a throat which projects into the hole cut in the door to accommodate the mail flap.

The mailbox is secured to the surface of the door by means of a two part collar which is fixed around the throat by means of two machine screws and threaded inserts, which is then secured by means of screws through holes in the collar to the surface of the door.

If the interior surface of the door has raised mouldings, the collar allows the mailbox to sit on the mouldings, without recourse to further attachments, by allowing the mailbox to slide in and out of the door before being tightened in situ. t

Thecontents of the mailbox may be retrieved by means of a lockable hinged flap C' on the front of the mailbox. This flap is mounted so that it sits flush with an internal flange ID', thus creating a relatively air tight seal. When the external mail flap is closed and the bottom flap C' is closed and locked, the mailbox will be substantially airtight.

The design of the mailbox minimises the effects of arson attacks directed at property through the mailbox.

A common method of attack is to drop lighted combustible material into the mailbox.

The mailbox will restrict the air supply to the burning material and thus extinquish the flames. Smoke generated within the mailbox will pass through a hole in the top of the receptacle and activate the smoke detector E', set off the combined alarm, and thus alert the occupants of the property to present danger.

The mailbox is to be made from fire resistant material, thus protecting the door and the interior of the house from the effects of fire.

Claims (1)
-
Claims 1. A receptacle for use as a mailbox having first and secondopenings therein, whereby both openings are closable in a substantially airtight way by flap means, and the receptacle has a combined smoke detector and alarm mounted on the top surface.

2. A receptacle as claimed in 1 above, whereby the sensing means is a surface mounted smoke detector which activates a combined alarm automatically upon detecting smoke within the receptacle.

3. A receptacle according to any preceding claim, whereby the receptacle is made of a flame resistant material.

4. A receptacle substantially as described herein with reference to, or as illustrated in, the drawings as presented.
