Abstract

A device 1, which may be secured to a tubular upright, to enable the height adjustment of a temporary edge protection barrier (5). The device comprises a multiplicity of locatable arms 2 and 3 set at intervals. In use, the device, which is in the form of a spigot or socket, is fixed to the upper extremity of a barrier support post. The arms support the barrier in an elevated position. This allows for work to continue below the barrier without removing the barrier completely.

Description

Description

The invention relates to a device that enables temporary edge protection barriers to be raised and held in situ to enable works to be carried out beneath the said temporary edge protection barriers.

The invention is a device that is used in either conjunction with tubular uprights or it may act as a post for temporary edge protection.

There are many situations in the construction industry whereby a hazard may arise from operatives falling from height; the preferred method of reducing this hazard is by passive protection namely the use of temporary barriers to prevent operatives or their equipment falling from heights. However such temporary barriers may impede the fixing of components to the structure of the building thereby they may have to be removed so increasing the hazard for the duration of the time the barrier is removed.

The object of this invention is to enable the temporary barriers to be raised in-situ thereby allowing the fixing of components to the structure of the building beneath the temporary edge protection barrier whilst still offering the passive protection of the barrier remaining in place.

The invention will be a fabricated metal structure. It will include as necessary a method of detachably securing the invention to a tubular upright by means of a socket or spigot or alternatively it include a method of permanently securing the device to a tubular upright or alternatively may form an integral part of a temporary edge protection post.

The invention will comprise of a multiplicity of locatable arms set at intervals along the length of the socket or spigot or parts contacted to the socket or spigot or alternatively to the edge protection post. The locatable arms will be generally opposite to each other and will held in a spaced arrangement at differing heights in a vertical plane. The locatable arms will be inclined or be so arranged to prevent a temporary barrier from being removed without a deliberate movement on behalf of the operator.

A preferred embodiment will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 Shows an isometric view of the invention Figure 2 Shows the assembly of barriers before being raised in position Figure 3 Shows the first stage of assembling the barriers into position Figure 4 Shows the second and subsequent stages of assembling the barriers into position.

As shown in Figure 1 the invention comprises of a vertical element that may be of circular or square section 1. An upper element 2 is attached to the vertical element I. A lower element 3 is attached to the veritical element I on the opposite plane but at a lower level to the upper element 2.

As shown in Figure 2 the temporary edge protection is assembled linearly on a series of tubular uprights 4.

As shown in Figure 3 temporary edge protection barrier 5 is raised until the outer element 6 engages into the upper element 2 on a pair of the tubular uprights thereby enabling access beneath the temporary edge protection barrier.

As shown in Figure 4 a subsequent temporary edge protection barrier 7 is raised until the inner element of the edge protection 8 engages with the lower element 3 of the invention thereby enabling access beneath the temporary edge protection barrier.

Claims (1)

  1.
Claims 1. An invention comprising of a vertical element which may
detachably or permanently secured to a tubular upright or alternatively may form an integral part of a temporary edge protection post with upper and lower opposable elements located at different heights on the vertical element that will enable a temporary edge protection barrier to be raised and located into the said upper and lower elements.

2. An invention as in Claim 1 whereby the vertical element comprises of a spigot or socket connection to a tubular upright.

3. An invention as in Claim 1 whereby the upper and lower elements of the invention are inclined at an angle of 0 to 110 degrees to the vertical plane of the vertical element.

4. An invention as in Claim 1 whereby the upper and lower elements of the invention are shaped in a generally "L" shaped section to provide a location for a temporary edge protection barrier.

5. An invention as in Claim 1 whereby the upper and lower elements of the invention are shaped in a generally "Z" shaped section to provide a location for a temporary edge protection barrier.

6. An invention as in Claim 1 whereby the upper and lower elements of the invention are shaped in a generally "U" or "C" shaped section to provide a location for a temporary edge protection barrier.

7. An invention as in Claim 1 whereby the upper and lower elements of the invention are of a square or rectangular section inclined to the vertical plane of the vertical element.

8. An invention as in Claim 1 whereby the upper and lower elements of the invention are of a circular or eliptical section inclined to the vertical plane of the vertical element.

9. An invention as in Claim I whereby the upper and lower elements of the invention are lockable.
