Abstract
A packaging insert adapted for use with items to maintain said items within a larger carton, comprises a sheet 2 of die-cut material comprising a plurality of creases 26a to 26d dividing said sheet into a plurality of sections onto which is attached a film 20. The film is attached to the sheet, such as by adhesive strips 22a, 22b, at spaced sections of the sheet so that when the sheet of material is folded along one of the creases, the film stretches and tightens over an item previously inserted between the film and sheet, so as to secure the item in place. The sheet may be of recycled corrugated board and may have apertures 24 to receive and retain projecting members of items.
Description

UNIVERSAL PACKAGING INSERT

The present invention relates generally to packaging inserts adapted for use with items so as to maintain them within a larger outer carton. The invention is particularly concerned with the packaging of electronic devices, principally cellular telephones and accessories.

The use of portable hand-held electronic devices, in particular cellular telephones, has increased rapidly in recent years resulting in sharp increases in sales of such items. Current packaging available for such items is generally not sufficient to protect them from damage during transportation, and is also not suitable to accommodate the immense range of devices, differing substantially in size and shape, firmly within the outer packaging to prevent it from damage whilst it is being transported. Devices such as those described above are currently packaged in larger outer cartons with different sized inserts needed for different devices. This can prove very costly and complicated given the vast array of different products available.

Accordingly, there is a need for an improved device that will accommodate a :.:::. 20 large range of items such as hand-held electronic devices and cellular *::::* telephones of varying size and shape within larger external cartons. The device also needs to be cost effective and simple to manufacture. * S

*5....

* The present invention provides a packaging insert adapted for use with items *....: 25 to maintain said items within a larger carton, comprising a sheet of die-cut * * material comprising a plurality of creases dividing said sheet into a plurality of S...

sections onto which is attached a film, positioned so that when the sheet of material is folded along one of the creases, the film stretches and tightens over the item so as to secure the item in place.

According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a packaging insert adapted for use with items to maintain said items within a larger carton, the packaging insert comprising a sheet of die-cut material comprising a plurality of creases dividing said sheet into a plurality of sections, and a film attached to a first section and a second section of the insert, the second section being separated from the first section by an intermediate section, the film overlying the intermediate section, whereby the item may be disposed between an upper side of the intermediate section and a lower side of the film, whereby when the insert is folded along a crease extending between the first section and the intermediate section the film is stretched and tightens over the item so as to secure the item in place.

The packaging insert of the present invention allows one or more items to be arranged on the insert before the insert needs to be inserted into the carton.

In a further embodiment of the first aspect of the present invention the film is attached to a first section and a second section of the insert. The second section is separated from the first section by at least two intermediate sections of the insert. The film overlies the at least two intermediate sections, whereby :* 20 the item may be disposed between an upper side of at least one of the intermediate sections and a lower side of the overlying film. The insert is then folded along a crease that extends between the first section and the *..S..

* : intermediate sections so that the film is stretched and tightens over the item S.....

* so as to secure the item in place. * 25

*S**S.

The sheet of die-cut material is configurable from a generally flat configuration to a folded configuration by folding the sheet of material along the plurality of creases dividing the sheet into a plurality of sections.

The sheet of die-cut material is manufactured from any suitable type of board strong enough to support itself when the insert is in the folded configuration.

The sheet is preferably manufactured from corrugated board, more preferably recycled corrugated board.

The film attached to the insert is preferably transparent so as to allow the item under the film to be clearly viewed, for possible inspection. The film is also preferably of the type able to stretch around the item placed within the insert without tearing or ripping. The film is preferably attached to the main body of the insert by two adhesive strips. Suitable materials for the film are well known in the art and include polymer films, such as polyotefin films, for example polyethylene-and polypropylene-based compositions and polyvinylchlorjde (PVC)-based films. A preferred film material is a polyethylene-based film.

In a preferred embodiment, the sheet of die-cut material preferably comprises sufficient sections, that is at least four sections, to be arranged to form an enclosure. In this embodiment, one section underlies another section, when folded, thereby allowing items to be retained in a stacked formation within the carton. This enclosure can be used to store small items and accessories. This arrangement also allows several items to be arranged on and within the insert :::. 20 prior to the insert being placed inside a carton. This offers significant advantages in the packing of items.

* The sheet of die-cut material preferably comprises five main sections. When **S*** * in the folded configuration, a first section preferably forms a first horizontal, or substantially horizontal, base. A second section preferably forms a first vertical, or substantially vertical, wall projecting upwards from the first section.

A third section preferably forms a horizontal, or substantially horizontal, floor projecting laterally from the second section. A fourth section preferably forms a vertical, or substantially vertical, wall projecting downwards from the third section. A fifth section preferably forms a second horizontal, or substantially horizontal, base projecting laterally from the fourth section, wherein the fifth section is parallel, or substantially parallel with the third section of the insert.

The fifth section is preferably arranged to underlie the third section, when in the folded position, so as to form an enclosure with the second, third and fourth sections.

The fifth section of the insert preferably further comprises a tab. When the insert is in the folded configuration and underlies the third section, the tab fits into an aperture of suitable size preferably located on the crease between the first and second sections of the insert, so as to secure the insert into the folded configuration.

One or more sections of the insert, preferably the third section of the insert, may comprise one or more further sections extending from their free ends, in particular to provide an enclosure. For example, the third section of the insert may comprise two further side sections, one positioned on each of the two free sides of the third section. When the insert is in the folded configuration, these two further sections project vertically, or substantially vertically, downwards from the third section, so that an enclosed chamber is formed between the second, third, fourth and fifth sections, completed by the two *. 20 further side sections attached to the third section. The side sections are **S.

preferably integral with the third section. Alternatively, the further sections may be separate from the main body of the insert.

S S.... * S

* . Preferably, at least one of the sections of the insert comprises a plurality of apertures which may receive projecting members of components to be stored, for example charging accessories for electrical components and the like, anchoring them into place for transportation. The plurality of apertures preferably features on the second section of the insert.

It has been found that a particularly improved insert is one having a plurality of intermediate sections between the first and second sections, with the firm overlying at least two of the intermediate sections. It has been found that items placed between the film and one of the intermediate sections are more securely retained when the insert is folded.

According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a packaging insert adapted for use with items to maintain said items within a larger outer carton, the packaging insert comprising a sheet of die-cut material comprising a plurality of creases dividing said sheet into a plurality of sections, and a film attached to a first section and a second section, the second section being separated from the first section by at least two intermediate sections of the insert, the film overlying the at least two intermediate sections, whereby the item may be disposed between an upper side of one of the intermediate sections and a lower side of the film, whereby when the insert is folded along a crease extending between the first section and an intermediate section the film is stretched and tightens over the item so as to secure the item in place.

The sheet of die-cut material is configurable from a generally flat configuration to a folded configuration by folding the sheet along the plurality of creases dividing the sheet into a plurality of sections. * ** * a * S...

strong enough to support itself when the insert is in the folded configuration.

The sheet is preferably manufactured from corrugated board, more preferably * S recycled corrugated board.

The piece of film attached to the insert is preferably transparent so as to allow S...

the item under the film to be clearly viewed, for possible inspection. The film is preferably attached to the main body of the insert by two adhesive strips.

Suitable materials for the film are as hereinbefore described.

In its simplest form, the insert of this aspect of the invention comprises four sections. Preferably, the film is attached to the first and fourth sections, with the item being placed between the film and the second section. In this way, when the insert is folded, the film is caused to pass over three creases, improving the retention of the item.

The sheet of die-cut material of this aspect of the invention preferably comprises five main sections. When in the folded configuration, a first section preferably forms a first horizontal, or substantially horizontal, base. A fifth section preferably forms a second horizontal, or substantially horizontal, base projecting laterally from the fourth section, being parallel, or substantially parallel with the third section of the insert. The fifth section preferably extends to underlie the third section, when the insert is folded.

:* 20 In a preferred embodiment, the sheet of die-cut material preferably comprises sufficient sections, that is at least four sections, to be arranged to form an * *.

enclosure. In this embodiment one section underlies another section, when * folded, thereby allowing items to be retained in a stacked formation within the carton. This enclosure can be used to store small items and accessories. This arrangement also allows several items to be arranged on and within the insert **** prior to the insert being placed inside a carton. This offers significant S..

advantages in the packing of items.

For example, the third section of the insert may comprise two further side sections, one positioned on each of the two free sides of the section. When the insert is in the folded configuration, these two further sections project vertically, or substantially vertically, downwards from the third section, so that an enclosed chamber is formed between the second, third, fourth and fifth sections, completed by the two further side sections attached to the third section. The side sections are preferably integral with the third section. Alternatively, the two further sections may be separate from the main body of the insert.

Preferably, at least one of the sections of the insert comprises a plurality of apertures which may receive projecting members of items, for example charging accessories for electrical items and the like, anchoring them into ::::. 20 place for transportation. The plurality of apertures preferably features on the ., second section of the insert. *..**

Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: * 25 Figure 1 shows a universal packaging insert of the first embodiment in the S..

generally flat configuration.

Figure 2 shows a universal packaging insert of the second embodiment in the generally flat configuration.

Figure 3 shows a universal packaging insert of the second embodiment in the folded configuration.

Referring to figure 1, there is shown a universal packaging insert in the generally flat configuration, generally indicated as 2. The insert comprises a first section 4, a second section 6, a third secton 8, a fourth section 10, and a fifth section 12. The sections 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 are generally rectangular and are in a parallel elongate arrangement, with adjacent sections being separated by creases, indicated by dashed lines 26a to 26d in the figure.

The fifth section 12 further comprises a tab 14 extending from its elongate free edge that, when the insert is folded along the creases, slots into an aperture 16 in the crease between the first section 4 and the second section 6, securing the insert in the folded configuration. It is to be understood that the tab and aperture may be of an alternative design to that shown in the figures, provided the tab can interlock with the aperture. The third section 8 further comprises two further side sections 1 8a and I 8b, one extending from each of the free ends of the third section 8.

. 20 A polyethylene film 20 is attached to the second section 6 and the fourth section 10 by means of adhesive strips 22a and 22b, and is separated by one 3 4* intermediate section, the third section 8. The film 20 overlies the third section : " 8 and portions of both the second and fourth sections 6, 10 to which it is * * attached. * 25

****..

The second section 6 comprises a plurality of apertures 24 to anchor items, such as charging accessories for electrical items and the like, into place.

Further apertures may be provided in the second or other sections as required to secure or anchor items to the insert, or to accommodate portions of items to be retained.

In use, the item to be held in place is positioned onto the third section 8, under the film 20. When the insert is then folded along the creases depicted by the dashed lines 26a-d, the film stretches and tightens over the item, securing it in place. The two further sections 18a and 18b attached to the third section 8 can be folded along creases 26e and 26f in order to form a closed chamber with the second section 6, third section 8, fourth section 10, and fifth section 12 when the insert is in the folded configuration.

Referring to figure 2, there is shown a universal packaging insert of a second embodiment in the generally flat configuration. The insert of figure 2 is of the same general configuration as the insert of figure 1 and the corresponding components have been identified using the same reference numerals.

The insert of figure 2 comprises a film 20 attached at one edge to the second portion 6 and the fifth portion 12, such that two intermediate sections, the third section 8 and the fourth section 10, are between the attachments of the film and underlie the film.

* ** Referring to figure 3, there is shown the universal packaging insert of figure 2 * * * in the folded configuration. The first section 4 forms a first horizontal, or substantially horizontal, base. The second section 6 forms a first vertical, or substantially vertical, wall projecting upwards from the first section 4. The third section 8 forms a horizontal, or substantially horizontal, floor projecting laterally from the second section 6. The fourth section 10 forms a vertical, or *.**I* * 25 substantially vertical, wall projecting downwards from the third section 8. The **** fifth section 12 forms a second horizontal, or substantially horizontal, base projecting laterally from the fourth section 10, being parallel, or substantially parallel, with and underlying the third section 8.

The two further side sections 18a and 18b attached to the third section 8 are folded so as to project vertically, or substantially vertically, downwards from the third section 8 in order to form a closed chamber with the second section 6, third section 8, fourth section 10, and fifth section 12 when the insert is in the folded configuration. It will be appreciated that the further side sections I 8a and 1 8b could be arranged to depend from the ends of one or more of the other sections forming the enclosure, in particular the second, fourth or fifth sections 6, 10 or 12. Having the further side sections 18a and 18b depend from the third section 8, as in figure 3, advantageously provides the third section with increased rigidity and improves the support for items retained on the upper surface of the third section 8.

The film 20 is shown to be covering intermediate sections 8 and 10, and is attached as hereinbefore described and shown in figure 2. In use, the item to be held in place is positioned on the third section 8, under the film 20. When the insert is then folded the film stretches and tightens over the item, securing it in place. It will be noted that in the embodiment shown in figures 2 and 3, when the insert is folded, the film 20 is caused to extend over three creases or fold lines, thus improving the retention of the item. * ** * * * ***.
