Abstract
A top rail for a sliding door comprises a back plate 3, a carrier 4 and a door plate 5 connected by sliding devices 6 to allow the rail to extend. The back plate may be connected to a doorway 1, and the door plate may be connected to a door 2, such that the rail extends as the door is opened. The arrangement is such that the rail does not visibly protrude from the side of the doorway when the door is in a closed position. The sliding devices 6 may be wheels. Buffers 7 may be provided to limit extension of the rail by limiting movement of the sliding devices. The rail may be provided with a hood (not shown), an automatic opening and closing device (not shown) and a locking method (not shown). The rail may be used with or without a bottom door guide.
Description

* 2431684 Sliding door extending top rail This invention relates to a
sliding door extending top rail.

Sliding doors are commonly used on doorways as an alternative to hinged doors or when a hinged door is not suitable. They are widely used for example in buildings, furniture and vehicles.

However, sliding doors are either connected, with wheels or runners on rails, at the top and the bottom or only suspended at the top with or without a guide at the bottom.

When only suspended at the top they require a top rail, usually covered with a hood, which protrudes to the side, the width of the door, to carry the weight of the door to the side when it opens.

Having the top rail I hood protruding to the side on a greenhouse for example, it usually protrudes beyond the width of the gable end of the greenhouse and therefore has to be supported and looks unattractive and utilitarian.

To overcome these problems, the present invention proposes a sliding door extending top rail, which does not require a permanent protruding top rail to the side. The sliding door extending top rail has a back plate which is connected to the top of the doorway opening and a door plate which is connected to the back of the top of the door. It has a sliding carrier, between the plates and connecting them, which slides using wheels, bearings or other slideable means on tracks between the two plates. This is similar to the drawer runners in a filling cabinet. The weight of the door, when sliding and fully open, is supported by the fact that the carrier is restricted to travel only half the length of both of the back plate and door plate, therefore, when the door is fully open the weight of the door is supported by the carrier in the middle and not at the edge. This enables the weight of the door to be easily manoeuvred without the need for a bottom support or a protruding top rail.

The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective a sliding door extending top rail attached to the doorway and the door with the door in the open position.

Figure 2 shows, from a front elevation, a sliding door extending top rail in the closed, half open and fully open positions.

Figure 3 shows a sliding door extending top rail plan view in the open position.

Figure 1 shows in perspective a sliding door extending top rail with the doorway I and the door 2 in the open position. The back plate 3 is connected to the doorway 1 with the carrier 4 connecting, by wheels, or slideable means, 6 the back plate 3 to the door plate 5 which is connected to the door 2.

Figure 2 shows, from a front elevation, a sliding door extending top rail in the closed, half open and fully open positions. When the door 2 is closed over the doorway 1 the door plate 5 is aligned and in front of the back plate 3 with the carrier 4 in between.

As the door 2 is slid open it slides on the wheels, or slideable means, 6 which are connected to the back plate 3, the carrier 4 and the door plate 5.

As the door 2 is slid fully open the carrier 4 is stopped by buffers 7 halfway along both the back plate 3 and the door plate 5.

Figure 3 shows a sliding door extending top rail plan view in the open position showing the wheels, or slideable means 6 and buffers 7 on the back plate 3, the carrier 4 and the door plate 5.
