Abstract
A retractable cable reel assembly comprises a cable reel 6 with adjustable tension and a rod for attachment to an item of electrical garden equipment of suitable length to lift the cable drawn off the reel above the head height of a person using the item of electrical garden equipment. The rod for attachment to an item of electrical garden equipment may have a lop 14 at one and a clamp at the other end for rod for attachment to the item of electrical garden equipment. The tension may be set by the user by adjusting a spring device attached to the reel. The reel may further comprise a housing provided with a cable guide to prevent the cable tangling. In use, the cable reel assembly prevents trailing cable causing a hazard and allows the safer use of electric lawn mowers and other electrical garden equipment.
Description
1 2431393 Garden Cable Reel This invention relates to a variable tension
retractable cable reel and its use with electric garden equipment, more specifically a lawnmower.
The invention indudes a rod attachment capable of being fixed to a lawnmower handle, of suitable length to lift the mower cable above head height of the user.
The retractable cable reel, fixed to a wall bracket at suitable height, will take up slack cable as the actual cable of the electrical equipment is plugged into and wound onto the central spindle of the reel.
Retractable cable reels are well known but they are supplied with cable and have preset tension.
This means that the cable supplied with the mower is not under tension when used with such a reel and so no advantage is afforded over nonretractable cable reels.
The object of this invention is to provide a means of keeping the electrical cable of the mower above head height of the user and under constant tension between the cable reel and rod attachment to the mower handle, so preventing trailing cable causing a hazard and allowing safer use of electric lawnmowers and other electrical garden equipment.
Accordingly this invention provides a variable tension retractable table reel capable of being fixed to a wall bracket set above head height of the user, and a rod attachment for fixing to the mower handle, again to keep the mower cable at this point above head height of the user.
The rod attachment is fixed to the mower handle by means of a simple damp of known design and has a loop swivel tip through which the mower cable passes.
The wall bracket will be pivoted to allow sideways movement of the attached reel.
The cable supplied with the mower is plugged/connected into the central spindle of the reel.
This cable is then fully wound onto the reel.
The tension is then set by means of a spring device attached to the reel. The reel is then placed into the reel housing and this sets the set tension to allow constant cable traction between the reel and rod attachment to the mower handle.
A cable guide on the reel will prevent tangling.
The reel is attached to sliding electrical contacts of known design so supplying power between the moving reel and a fixed lead with plug top for connection to mains supply.
A thermal cut out and ventilation holes in the reel spindle, in addition to the open design, will prevent the reel overheating. However it is envisaged that when mowing a lawn most of the cable will be out of the reel, reducing such a risk.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which; FIGURE 1 shows a side view of the general concept.
FIGURE 2 shows a plan of the reel and section of its housing.
FIGURE 3 is a side elevation showing the spring mechanism.
As shown in Fig 2 and 3, the cable reel is capable of being fixed to a wall bracket, 2.
The cable supplied with the mower, 7, is plugged/connected into the central spindle of the reel with ventilation holes, 6. This cable is then fully wound onto the reel.
Fig 3 shows the spring device 3 attached to the reel that allows the tension to be set.
The spring links the reel, 6 with the axis of the spring device, 4.
The spring is fully wound, the reel is then placed into the reel housing land fixed by locating pins 12 and 13, Fig 2.
The tension is set using screw top 9, Fig 2.
This allows constant cable traction between the reel and rod attachment to the mower handle.
The reel is attached to sliding electrical contacts of known design at 8 so supplying power between the moving reel and fixed lead 5 with plug top for connection to mains supply.
Fig 3 also shows a thermal cut out 11 in the reel spindle, which, in addition to the open design, will prevent the reel overheating.
A cable guide 10 on the reel will prevent tangling.
As shown in Fig 1, the cable reel attached to the wall bracket fixed above head height of the user, together with the rod attachment to the mower handle, will provide constant tension between the cable reel and rod attachment so preventing trailing cable causing a hazard and allowing safer and more practicable use of electric lawnmowers and other electrical garden equipment.
