Ladder escapes.-A fire-escape ladder is permanently secured to the wall of a building at a distance from the wall less than the length of a person's thigh, so that a user descends on the wall side of the ladder and cannot crumple and fall. The upper end of the ladder a is bent back and let into the brickwork, and horizontal and diagonal braces c, d are provided at the level of each window-sill b. The braces c enable a user to step to the outside of the ladder if desired.
