Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DISCHARGING
LIQUID TRACE SOLUTIONS
This invention relates to a method and apparatus for discharging liquid trace solutions. In particular, this invention relates to a method and apparatus for preventing or deterring criminal events by discharging unique liquid trace solutions during the course of a criminal or unlawful event.
In recent years, the use of liquid trace solutions has been particularly useful in preventing crime. Such trace solutions provide a unique trace to the premises in which an event occurred. The trace mechanism can be based on various methods currently available, such as chemical combinations or DNA, and the interested reader : is referred to WO 93/07233, GB 2 369 078, GB 2 410 208 and GB 2 413 675. Analysis of the surfaces onto which *S.. * I
such a unique liquid trace solution falls can provide a method of tracing items, or persons, present at specific locations and times.
*II*.. * *
It is however problematic to provide a reliable method and apparatus for discharging liquid trace solutions during the course of a criminal or unlawful
event. Prior art discharge methods use either a
pressurised cylinder or a high amperage to fire the device. The long-term storage of a cylinder under pressure provides problems in terms of maintaining the pressure. The high electrical amperage required to melt seals to facilitate discharge of the pressurised liquid trace solutions also provides a hazard in terms of fire and electrical risks.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a method and apparatus for discharging liquid trace solutions. The method and apparatus according to the present invention can be used in a variety of different applications or events that require a liquid trace mark to be applied to surfaces preferably, goods, property, premises or individuals present at the location and time when the apparatus was activated. This then provides irrefutable proof of the presence of the marked item or individual at the scene. It is a further object of the present invention to provide a method and apparatus that facilitates a rapid and reliable discharge of the liquid trace solution in an activation or alarm condition. The method and apparatus according to the : s. present invention can be positioned in a number of a...
situations in which valuable goods, or persons, which are *.s.

* According to the present invention there is provided *.s*..
* a method of rapidly discharging a liquid trace solution in response to an activation condition, the liquid trace solution being held in a closed receptacle and which is capable of being pressurised by a pressurised vessel in direct communication with an electromechanical actuator, comprising the steps of: providing at least one electrical input to the electromechanical actuator such that, in a activation condition, the electromechanical actuator pierces the pressurised vessel thereby forcing the liquid trace solution through an outlet in the closed receptacle.
Also according to the present invention there is provided an apparatus for rapidly discharging a liquid trace solution in response to an activation condition, comprising: a closed receptacle containing the liquid trace solution, the closed receptacle also containing a pressurised vessel in direct communication with an electromechanical actuator; and means for providing at least one electrical input to the electromechanical actuator such that, in a activation condition, the electromechanical actuator pierces the pressurised vessel thereby forcing the liquid trace solution through an outlet in the closed receptacle. * *. * * * * *.
In a preferred embodiment, the liquid trace solution S. is water-based and unique. The unique liquid trace solution being based upon chemical combinations or DNA.
Analysis of the dried down liquid trace solution on items * * or individuals suspected of being in the area at the time of the event can be used to prove this to be the case or *SSS5* * not.
Preferably, the closed receptacle is formed as a cylinder and includes a threaded cylinder head which screws into the neck of the cylinder and forms a pressure seal against a rubber 0' ring. To prevent pressure build up during assembly, a vent is made with a vertical cut down one section of the threaded cylinder head, such that no pressure seal is made until the 0' ring seats.
Further preferably, the pressurised vessel and electromechanical actuator are retained in a watertight enclosure connected to the cylinder head. The watertight enclosure includes a pressure release plug which is releasable into a headspace between the liquid trace solution and the cylinder head. The electromechanical actuator may be provided as an electrically-operated protractor or other suitable electrical-tomechanical transducer. Preferably, the pressurised vessel is a carbon dioxide cylinder which is capable of being pierced by the electromechanical actuator.
In use, in the activation condition, the headspace above the liquid trace solution provides a mechanism to : *" limit the pressure build up in the closed receptacle.
The more headspace space allowed above the liquid trace *..
solution effectively lowers the pressure at which the S. * liquid trace solution is forced the through an outlet in the closed receptacle. * *
In a preferred embodiment, the outlet in the closed **SS*I * S receptacle is connected to a dip tube and a bursting disk arrangement. Further, in use, the outlet in the closed receptacle is connected to a spray nozzle. Preferably, the cylinder and cylinder head are formed from a suitable plastics material, such as Deirin .
Preferably, the activation condition being a criminal offence, such as robbery. In use, the means for providing at least one electrical input to the electromechanical actuator being connected to the output of a building's alarm system or other firing circuitry.
The activation condition being triggered by at least one detection device, such as a passive infrared detector.
In one embodiment, the activation condition occurs only being triggered upon detection of an event from a second detection device positioned in a specific area covered.
Alternatively, the method and apparatus according to the present invention may also be implemented in smaller confines such as road vehicles; private, commercial and haulage. In this embodiment, the means for providing at least one electrical input to the electromechanical actuator the cylinder may be connected to a panic button, and activated by an individual under duress.
: .. It is believed that a method and apparatus for **..
discharging liquid trace solutions in accordance with the *S*.
present invention at least addresses the problems *... outlined above. In particular, the advantages of the present invention are that a method and apparatus is * , provided that can be used in a variety of different applications or events that require a liquid trace mark *S* S. * to be applied to surfaces preferably, goods, property, premises or individuals present at the location and time when the method and apparatus was activated.
Advantageously, this then provides irrefutable proof of the presence of the marked item or individual at the scene. It is a further advantage of the present invention that a method and apparatus is provided that facilitates a rapid and reliable discharge of the liquid trace solution in an activation or alarm condition. The method and apparatus according to the present invention can be positioned in a number of situations in which valuable goods, or persons, which are susceptible to theft or abuse, are stored or placed to provide protection. The method and apparatus can be manufactured straightforwardly and at a lower cost.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that variations of the present invention are possible and it is intended that the present invention may be used other than as specifically described herein.
A specific non-limiting embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: : * Fig. 1 illustrates a cross sectional view of side **..
section of a pressurised cylinder including the unique ***.
liquid trace solution according to the present invention. S. * * S * * *.
Referring now to the drawings, the implementation of * * the present invention is illustrated in Fig. 1. In particular, Fig. 1 shows a cylinder 1 containing the *SS...
* liquid trace solution 100. During a discharge, a pressure is developed for a short time and the cylinder 1 must be capable of withstanding this. The headspace above the liquid 100 provides a mechanism to limit the pressure build up in the cylinder 1, in that the more space allowed above the liquid 100 the lower the pressure.
The liquid 100 is ideally water-based and so the cylinder 1 must be made or coated with a material resistant to this. Likewise, the cylinder head 2 and attachments must be made of a suitable material, ideally plastic such as Deirin .
As shown in Fig. 1, the cylinder head 2 contains the main operating parts of the invention. It screws into the neck to form a seal against a rubber 0' ring 3. To prevent pressure build up during assembly, a vent is made with a vertical cut down one section of the cylinder thread 4 so that no seal is made until the 0' ring 3 seats. This prevents unnecessary pressure developing on the bursting disc 5 during assembly.
In an alarm condition, the cylinder 1 is pressurised through the use of an electrically-operated protractor 6 : *** which, in use, fires upon receipt of a necessary voltage **..
and punctures a small carbon dioxide cylinder 7 held within a watertight enclosure 8. Pressure builds within S. * . .: the enclosure 8 which causes a pressure release plug 9 to blow, thus providing pressurisation of the whole *:*:.* cylinder 1.
S
* Liquid 100 is then forced through the dip tube 10, through the bursting disk 5 and out of the cylinder 1 to whatever deployment means is used, typically a spray nozzle (not shown) Bulkhead fittings 11 are also used to secure the dip tube 10 to the head 2 and to allow tubing to be fitted to the exit point 12.
In use, the present invention is particularly useful in discharging unique markers during various criminal offences. In one embodiment, the cylinder 1 would be attached to a building's alarm system, or its own firing circuitry. In the former, the apparatus would be used to cover a particular area, possibly in which valuable goods, or those susceptible to theft are stored.
In this situation, the apparatus would fire in two stages. In the event of a robbery or other activation event, a detection device, typically a passive infra red (PIR) detector (not shown) would detect the illegal entry and arm the apparatus via a first input. It would not however discharge at this stage.
In order to discharge the cylinder 100, a second : .. input is required from the specific area covered. This is again typically supplied via a PIR detecting the presence of an intruder in the specific area covered.
Once this second input is received, the electrically- operated protractor 6 is powered puncturing the pressure * * release cylinder 7. The device then discharges the liquid * * * * 100 to the area in question. Any items in that area and ***S..
any personnel present will be covered in the liquid 100, which is known to be unique to the premises concerned and known to have deployed at specific time.
Analysis of the dried down liquid from items or individuals suspected of being in the premises at the time of the event can be used to prove this to be the case or not.
The automatic discharging of the cylinder can be used in this embodiment as a means of reducing offences through a combination of convictions, deterrence based on these, police methods and media coverage. Likewise, the method and apparatus may also be used in smaller confines such as road vehicles; private, commercial and haulage.
In a further embodiment, the cylinder may be fired immediately via a panic button (not shown) activated by an individual under duress.
Various alterations and modifications may be made to the present invention without departing from the scope of the invention. * S. * . . **.S *S*5 * S *..S S. * * SS * S.
