Abstract
A device for securing a nasal endotracheal tube during general anaesthesia which comprises an adjustable headband 1 and an additional strip of material 2 to secure the nasal tube to the headband 1. Preferably the headband 1 is adjusted with hook and loop tape 4. The additional strip of material 2 may be secured to the headband 1 with hook and loop tape or adhesive. An area of adhesive 3 may also be provided on the additional strip of material 2 to enable it to be attached directly to the nasal tube for extra security. The headband 1 may be secured around the patient's forehead to secure the nasal endotracheal tube during surgery.
Description
Securing device for a Nasal Endotracheal tube During General Anaesthesia
(GA) an Anaesthetist employs some method of maintaining a clear and safe airway whilst surgery takes place. The safest method of airway control involves placing a tube into the patient's trachea (windpipe) either via the mouth (oral tube) or the nose (nasal tube). It is vital that this tube remains secure and stable throughout the operation.
The oral tube is easy to secure with a simple tie around the patient's neck. The nasal tube, however, is notoriously difficult to maintain safely in place. Nasal tubes are most commonly used for operations in and around the mouth e.g. Dental or Maxillary facial surgery. Various devices or contraptions have been tried but are often either unreliable or bulky, getting in the surgeons way. Other methods involve using strong adhesive tape to attach the tube directly to the skin on the forehead. This method often results in removal of hair or skin.
An object of this invention is to provide a safe, secure, unobtrusive means of securing the nasal endotracheal tube during surgery. The device would have to be single patient use to avoid problems with cross contamination.
Accordingly this invention provides a headband of soft, non-abrasive material that can be adjusted to fit tightly around any sized adult head. The band should sit just above the eyebrows. The nasal tube is secured onto the headband using an additional strip of material the same width as the headband) This additional strip can secure to the headband either by adhesive or Velch1!dditional security is provided by a small area of adhesive on the strip, which secures directly to the nasal tube.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE 1 shows a side view of the device.
FIGURE 2 shows a cross sectional view of the device at a level just above the eyebrows.
As shown in the figures the device consists of a soft, non-abrasive headband 1 which is adjustable 4 to fit tightly around the forehead of the anaesthetised patient. An additional strip of material 2 is secured to the headband I holding the nasal tube tightly to the patient's forehead. The additional strip has a small area coated with adhesive 3 that sticks directly to the nasal tube providing extra security.
The headband 1 could consist of a soft, strong, slightly elasticated mat9p$latex free). This could be adjusted to fit any adult head size using a Velcrcfstener 4. A small area in the middle of the additional strip could be coated with adhesive with a peel off' covering 3. The covering would be removed and the adhesive portion of the strip applied directly to the surface of the nasal tube. The additional strip 2 could be made4'e same material as the head band and attach to the headband again using Velcrcor adhesive.
