Abstract
The invention relates to a pre-fabricated metal beam known as a soldier used in load bearing applications within the building and construction industries. The soldier provides a high load bearing capacity and light weight construction and comprises a pair of outer channel sections 1 and a pair of inner channel sections 2 held in spaced relationship, wherein a web of the channel sections has a plurality of apertures. The outer channel sections 1 may comprise flanges that face towards each other and the outer channel sections 2 may comprise flanges that face away from each other.

Description
The invention relates to a pre-fàbricated metal beam known as a so-called soldier to be used in a number of diverse load bearing applications within the building and construction industries. The applications may be, but not limited to, acting as a beam or as a column or as a shore.
The invention may be used singly or a number of the inventions may be connected or used in conjunction with other propriety systems as may be required Such applications require that the load bearing capacity of the so-called soldier is calculable for each type of application.
Many applications require manual installation of the soldier in restricted and confined spaces with limited access.
The known type of soldier are of either a high load bearing capacity and of heavy construction thereby making manual installation difficult and hazardous or of low load bearing capacity and of light construction which makes them either unsuitable for the application or that too great a number have to be used.
The object of this invention provides a soldier with a high load bearing capacity but of light construction thereby making manual installation easier and safer.
Accordingly the invention provides for soldier to comprising of pair of outer elements formed as channel sections and a pair of inner elements formed as channel sections.
The channels are so formed that the flanges are generally perpendicular to the web and may have a multiplicity of apertures to facilitate their use with items of proprietary equipment or structures. The outer pair of elements is held in a parallel spaced relationship by the inner pair of elements that are themselves held in a parallel spaced relationship by their attachment to the outer elements; each pair of elements is parallel to each other thereby forming a so-called "box" structure. The flanges of the inner pair of elements are fixed in such a manner that they face away from each other and the flanges of the outer pair of elements face towards each other. The flanges of the inner pair of elements are attached to the web of the outer elements either at intervals or continuously. The soldier may be open-ended or may have flanges at each end of the soldier to facilitate their connection and adjustment to each other or other proprietary equipment or structures.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which FIGURE 1 shows a view of the barrier assembly (without flanges for clarity) FIGURE 2 shows a cross section through the soldier.
As shown in FIGURE 1 the soldier comprises of pair of outer elements 1. formed as channels attached to a inner pair of elements 2.formed as channels.

Claims (5)
- Page 3.Claims 1. A soldier comprising of a pair of outer elements formed as channel sections and a pair of inner elements formed as channel sections held in a spaced relationship. The channel sections are so formed to be generally perpendicular to the web and will have a multiplicity of apertures.
- 2. A soldier as claimed in Claim 1 that has the flanges of the outer pair of elements facing towards each other.
- 3. A soldier as claimed in Claim I that has the flanges of the inner pair of elements facing away from each other.
- 4. A soldier as claimed in Claim 1 that the outer pair of elements and the inner pair of elements are attached to each other to form a so-called "box" section.
- 5. AsoldierasclaimedinClaimlthattheflangesoftheinnerelementsare attached to the web of the outer elements at intervals or in a continuous manner.
