Description

"A thnk pn&"
Introduction
The present invention relates to a tank panel for making a sectional liquid storage tank assembled by using fasteners to secure tank panels together and also relates to a sectional liquid storage tank so produced.
Many of these tanks are in fact for the storage of water and are often manufactured from panels moulded using a moulded compound comprising fibreglass reinforced resin. There are considerable advantages in providing water and other liquid storage tanks in knockdown form. One of the problems obviously with large liquid storage tanks, if they are manufactured remote from where they are to be used, is the cost : and difficulty of transport, since, in its very simplest, one is transporting large * * .* 15 amounts of voids and, at its most complex, the size of the tanks are such as to give **** considerable problems in transport, particularly over land. A further problem often : . : . arises, on installation, if the tank is large as access to its place of use and indeed its placing in position can be difficult. There are thus major advantages in such sectional * liquid storage tanks in the sense of erection and transport. There are also further :. 20 advantages in the sense that damaged tanks are much more easily repaired than if * the tank is all, of the one integrated construction.
These tanks are, as stated above, generally manufactured from panels of fibreglass reinforced resin. However, for certain applications, fibreglass reinforced resin is not the ideal material. The problem is that in some cases, the materials can chemically react with the liquid being stored. While there has never been any suggestion heretofore that there would be any difficulty in storing water in tanks manufactured from fibreglass reinforcing material, there is always the possibility that in certain situations, it might not necessarily be desirable. Indeed, to use the word "desirable" may not be correct and a term such as "perceived to be desirable" may be more appropriate. It is more a perception by the consumer that fibreglass reinforced resin is not the ideal material to store water. Thus, one can well see that there might be a consumer desire to have the water stored in tanks, other than those manufactured with fibreglass reinforced material in contact with water. One could well imagine that the consumer might have some concern for potable beverages being stored in direct contact with fibreglass reinforced resin. While there is, at present, absolutely no medical or other reason to support this prejudice, it might be necessary for the suppliers of such beverages to be aware of the concerns and thus take the appropriate action. Obviously, certain other materials such as acids and alcohols, ketones and indeed bases could react adversely with fibreglass reinforced resins of the type normally used for water storage and such tanks should be available for storage of such liquids.
The present invention is directed towards overcoming these problems.
SthtAmAnfs nf lnvntipn * : According to the invention, there is provided a tank panel for making a sectional liquid * *, 15 storage tank assembled by using fasteners to secure tank panels together, each tank S...
panel comprising a base portion; an upstanding rectangular peripheral rim on the :.:... base, the panel mounting through holes for the reception of fasteners in which the * * tank panel is formed from a sheet moulding compound comprising fibre reinforced * plastics material having an outer liquid contacting skin of a material resistant to :. : 20 chemical interaction with specified liquids. The advantage of this is that the skin will S..... . . . . . * . prevent any possibility of contamination or deterioration of the tank.
In one embodiment of the invention, the skin covers all the outer surfaces of the panel.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, a sheet of heat insulation material is sandwiched between portion of the skin and the remainder of the panel.
In this latter embodiment, the sheet of insulation material is mounted in the recess formed by the peripheral rim. The fibre reinforced plastics material may be a fibreglass reinforced resin.
In some embodiments of the invention, the skin is formed of one of: polypropylene, polyethylene, polymethylpentene, ethylenetetrafluoroethylene, polyvinylchioride, polystyrene, and nylon.
DetailAd Dsription of the InvAntion The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description of some embodiments thereof, given by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a typical perspective view of a sectional liquid storage tank according to the invention, * S. * S * *.S * Fig. 2 is a typical sectional view through portion of the tank, a...
Fig. 3 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 2 of a bottom of a different *. construction of tank, Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a tank panel according to the invention, * *SS.. * a
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of an alternative construction of tank panel according to the invention, Fig. 6 is a sectional view of another tank panel according to the invention, Fig. 7 is a sectional view of a still further tank panel according to the invention, Fig. 8 is a sectional view of a still further construction of tank panel according to the invention, and Fig. 9 is a sectional view of another construction of tank panel according to the invention.
Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a sectional liquid storage tank, indicated generally by the reference numeral 1, comprising a plurality of tank panels, indicated generally by the reference numeral 10. It will be noted that the tank panels 10 are bolted together through holes 2 by bolts 5 (not all of which are shown in Fig. 1). At their corners additionally there is provided angle supports 3. The manner in which they are bolted together can be seen clearly in Fig. 2.
Referring to Fig. 3, there is shown an alternative arrangement by which the tank panels 10 can be bolted together by the bolts 5.
: Referring now to Fig. 4, each tank panel 10 comprises a base 11 and a stepped *::::* 15 peripheral rim 12 forming a recess 13. In this embodiment, the panel 10 is formed of two materials, namely, a fibreglass reinforced portion 14 and a skin 15 of a polymer : :** material. The fibreglass reinforced portion 14 is manufactured in accordance with the : process described and claimed in our copending UK Patent Application No. * * 0425918.0 filed on November 25, 2004. The disclosure of the specification of this application is included here by way of reference and discloses in detail how the *SS...
* fibreglass reinforced portion 14 is manufactured, this is not repeated in this specification. When the tank 1 is manufactured in the form as illustrated in Fig. 2, it will be noted that the skin 15 is in contact with the liquid within the tank I and thus the liquid within the tank I is removed from contact with the fibreglass reinforced resin.
Referring now to Fig. 5, there is illustrated an alternative construction of tank panel, indicated generally by the reference numeral 20, in which parts similar to those described with reference to the previous drawings are identified by the same reference numerals. In this embodiment, the tank panel 20 has an outer insulation layer formed from a flat piece of insulation material 21 between the skin 15 and the fibreglass reinforced portion 14.
Fig. 6 illustrates a further construction of tank panel, indicated generally by the reference numeral 25, in which parts similar to those described with reference to the previous drawings, are identified by the same reference numerals. In this embodiment, the tank panel 25 is suitable for use in the construction, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 illustrates another construction of panel, indicated generally by the reference numeral 30, in which parts similar to those described in the previous drawings are identified by the same reference numerals. In this embodiment, there is also provided an insulation panel 21.
Fig. 8 illustrates a still further construction of panel, indicated generally by the reference numeral 35, in which parts similar to those described with reference to the previous drawings, are identified by the same reference numerals. In this embodiment, the skin 15 extends around the whole panel. Fig. 9 illustrates a :. * modification of the another panel, indicated generally by the reference numeral 40, *: :: 15 substantially similar to the panel of Fig. 8, except that this now incorporates a sheet of : insulation material. ****
While in the description above, the reference has been made almost entirely to * * fibreglass reinforced resin, it will be appreciated that the tanks can be made of other materials such as fibre reinforced plastics materials. This general term "fibre **S...
* reinforced plastics material" is used in this specification to cover not only fibre reinforced plastics materials but also fibreglass reinforced resins. Thus, for example, it is known to use non-glass reinforcement materials such as carbon, Keflar, etc. and also the use of thermopolymers as well as thermosetting resins to hold the matrix together. It is envisaged that these could be used with the present invention.
The skin may be manufactured from many suitable materials and will in many instances depend entirely on the liquid to be stored. For example, material such as polypropylene, polyethylene, polymethylpentene, ethylenetetrafluoroethylene polyvinylchloride, polystyrene and nylon may all be used, depending on the particular use such as, for example, ketones would be stored in a tank lined with nylon, while acids or alcohols could be stored in tanks lined with polyethylene, polypropylene, polymethylpentene or ethylenetetrafluoroethylene The insulation panels may be any suitable expanded polyurethane, expanded polyethylene and so on.
The outer skin can be vacuum formed. Alternatively it may be formed in a compression mould such as described in our copending UK Patent Application No. 0425918.0 or may be applied to the panel subsequent to moulding. For example, this can be done by using a suitable contact adhesive. For instance, various materials may be added to the mould in sheet form prior to moulding of the glass fibre reinforced. Resin may be incorporated as a surfactant within the glass fibre reinforced resin moulding compound. Many other ways may be used to achieve the same objects, such as, for example, some form of subsequent spray deposition or the like of the polymer material on top of the previously formed glass fibre reinforced panel. Many ways will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
In the specification the terms "comprise, comprises, comprised and comprising" or *: : : :* 15 any variation thereof and the terms "include, includes, included and including" or any * variation thereof are considered to be totally interchangeable and they should all be * afforded the widest possible interpretation and vice versa.
* * The invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described, but may be * :* 20 varied within the scope of the claims.
