Abstract
A protective skin barrier comprising a one-piece appliance with an applicator. Preferably the barrier may be used with any type of stoma bag or base plate. The barrier may be in the form of a sock 1 which sits over the stoma protrusion with a flat base 3 which contacts the abdomen. The barrier may sit under the stoma bag or base plate and may be formed from elasticated, waterproof and non-adhesive material. The applicator tube may hold the sock portion 1 open for attachment to the stoma. The barrier may protect the skin from damage caused by leaks from the stoma bag.
Description
Skin Barrier for Stoma Patients
Description
One of the problems with wearing a stoma bag is that there is a certain amount of seepage where the base plate of the bag does not sit neatly around the base of the stoma. Faecal matter or urine sits in the space between the two surfaces and causes erosion and ulceration on the skin surface.
Because of this seepage a certain amount of tracking occurs, making it necessary for the patient to have to change the bag frequently. Frequently changing the bag not only exasperates the problem of ulceration due to the tearing action required to remove the bag from the skin, but also is a great cost to the patient or the NHS dependent on who pays for the bags.
The stoma sock is a waterproof one-piece barrier with a practical applicator for both lleostony and Urostomy patients. Designed to sit over the base çf the stoma and cover part of the protrusion, it sits under the base plate providing a barrier between the matter in the bag and the skin around the base of the stoma.
This product will extend the life of the bag, prevent skin damage and provide damaged skin with an opportunity to repair itself.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1. Shows the preferred maximum circumference of the stoma sock and how the inner circle would be cut in accordance with the patient's stoma size.
Figure 2. Shows a complete drawing of the stoma sock Figure 3. Shows a side profile of the stoma sock after it has been applied to a stoma and is covered with a base plate of a bag Figure 4. Shows a stoma sock with its preferred method of application, a plastic tube.
Figure 5. Shows how a stoma sock would be applied with the preferred applicator.
Figure 6. Shows how a one-piece stoma bag would then be placed over the Stoma sock.
The Stoma Sock is a one-piece barrier 2. The base of the sock is in contact with the abdomen 6 and is preferably thin, non-adhesive and waterproof. A base plate 5 or one-piece appliance 9&1O is applied over this barrier and on to the skin. See figure 3.
The preferred size of the base of the Stoma sock is 70mm in circumference. This is to allow a decent area for the bags base plate to sit on. The sock would have an inner circle cut which would be relative to the size of the patient's stoma. See figure 1. This would allow the wearer to have the most comfortable fit in relation to their stoma size.
The "sock"l of the Stoma Sock would then rise up from the inner circle of the barrier to a height specific to the stoma length with a preferred maximum height of 6 cm. See figure 2.This height can be pre-cut specifically for the wearer before it is sent to them relative to their stoma length or can be cut by them if their length varies.
It is preferable that the "sock" part of the barrier is made out of some elasticated type material, which is also waterproof. This is to enable the barrier to form a snug fit around the stoma and prevent any matter from seeping through or under the Stoma Sock to the base of the stoma.
It is preferred that before application the "sock" part of the Stoma Sock is held open by a disposable plastic tube or applicator 7 which is slightly larger than the stoma circumference. This is to allow easier application of the barrier. See Figure 4.
The Stoma Sock together with its applicator will be placed over the stoma and slid down to the base. When the base of the Stoma Sock is firmly in contact with the abdomen 6 it can then be held in place preferably with two fingers, whilst the plastic applicator is removed. See Figure 5.
Once the applicator is removed then a base p'ate or bag can be applied on top of the Stoma Sock. See Figure 6
