Abstract
A rotatable picture frame comprises a transparent front cover 2 and a back cover 3 which are fixed together to secure a picture 1. The rear cover is bonded to a flange 6 which is affixed to an axle 7. The axle fits into another flange 9 which is wall mounted. The frame is free to be rotated through 360 degrees about an axis which is at right angles to the plane of the wall. The front and back covers may be secured by a lip or flange affixed to the front panel.
Description
ROTATING PICTURE FRAME
This invention relates to picture frames.
Picture flames are normally square or rectangular, comprising a sheet of thin glass which protects the picture and a backplate to give strength, the two held together by rigid sections of wood. metal or plastic.
It. is an aim of the present invention to provide an alternative type of picture frame.
According to the present invention this is provided by a rotating picture frame comprising a transparent front cover, a back cover, a picture between the front cover and back cover, and a rotating axle for mounting the rotating picture flame and which is vertical in use.
The apparatus of the present invention allows the use of 360 degree circular photographic images with a polar projection, for example the image shown in figure 3, so that they can be fully appreciated.
With this projection the viewer is either looking downwards onto the ground, which is in the centre of the image, or else is looking upwards, which places the ceiling or the sky in the centre of the image. In either case our normal horizon is made circular and the picture needs to be rotated.
Prdènrbly the front cover has a lip for attachment to the back cover Preferably the back cover fits inside the lip of the front cover in order to locate the picture between the front cover and the back cover The front cover is preferably of clear acrylic, but may be of other transparent plastic or of glass. The diameter of the frame is preferably 50 an. but may be, for example, as little as 10 cm or as much as 1 metre.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in whick Fig! shows a section of the iotating circular frame; Fig 2 shows a plan of the rotating clrcular frame and Fig 3 shows an illustration of the type of picture which needs a rotating flame Retrring to the drawings, the rotating picture flame comprises a transparent front cover 2, a back cover 3, a picture I between the front cover aial back cover, and a rotating axle 7 Ibe mounting the rotating picture frame and which is vertical in use. The front and back covers are secured together, fbr example with screws 4 and 5. The rear co is bonded to a flange 6, which is tightened onto an axle 7 by means of screws 8, which can be lightened with a long screwdriver when being ssembled. This axle fits inside a wail flange 9 which can be attached with screws II to the wall or other surface 12. By varying the lightness of screws 10 between the axle and the wall flange, the whole picture frame can be left free to be rotated or else left fixed in one oiientaiion.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with referenee to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be made. Thus, for example; the that cover- and back cover can be of shapes different to those shown. Also, Ibr example; the back cover 3may not be transparent. And whilst the lip 14 is preferred it could be omitted and replaced by another method of holding the front cover and back cover together. Also other types of bearing may be used other than that illustrated, and other forms of fastening to the support
