Abstract

Bed linen, in particular a bed sheet, comprises removable poles 6 which form a frame to which a set of straps 3 are attached to hold the sheet 1 in place on a mattress. The bed sheet is preferably fabricated with a narrow sleeve 1 on each side. The sleeves 1 are preferably discontinuous having windows 2 at the end and/or intermediate points providing access to the poles 6. Adjustable straps 3 are preferably installed below the mattress from end to end and/or from side to side. The straps may terminate with a loop or hook 5 to attach the strap to the pole 6. In addition each strap preferably has a simple mechanism 4 to allow its length to be adjusted.

Description

Easy Fit Bed Sheet The invention relates to bed linen which is used to
cover a standard mattress to provide a sleeping surface, in particular a bed sheet.
Bed sheets are typically attached to a mattress by sizing the sheet so that it is substantially larger than the surface of the mattress providing overhanging fabric which can be tucked below the mattress. This requires 1) the sheet to be positioned centrally and laid flat on the mattress 2) the mattress to be lifted consecutively at each corner and along each side with one hand leaving the second hand free to tuck the overhanging sheet material below the mattress. This process is both time consuming and requires considerable effort. Further, since the sheet is held in place only by the weight of the mattress, during use the sheet typically becomes loose and wrinkled resulting in a less comfortable sleeping surface.
The objective of this invention is to provide an alternative design for bed linen which can be attached to a mattress quickly, without the need to lift the mattress and ensures that it remains taut.
The invention proposes bed linen, in particular a bed sheet, having removable poles which form a frame to which a set of straps are attached to hold the bed sheet in place on a mattress.
An example of this invention is described below with reference to the following diagrams:- Figure I shows the bed sheet with discontinuous sleeves on each side.
Figure 2 shows a mattress with 3 straps installed from end to end Figure 3 shows a mattress with 3 straps installed from side to side Figure 4 shows a mattress with the sheet attached using poles at the ends of the mattress only The bed sheet shown in Figure I is sized to cover the top surface of the mattress and is fabricated with a narrow sleeve I on each side. The sleeves are discontinuous having windows 2 at the end and/or intermediate points providing access to the pole. 2.
Adjustable straps 3 are installed below the mattress from end to end as shown in Figure 2 and/or from side to side as shown in Figure 3. The straps have a loop or hook 5 at each end to attach the strap to the pole 6. In addition each strap has a simple mechanism 4 to allow its length to be adjusted.
The provision of sleeves on the four sides of the sheet provides the option to attach the sheet to the bed as follows: I) poles only at the ends of the mattress 2) poles only at the sides of the mattress 3) poles at both the ends and the sides of the mattress. The number of straps required will depend upon the size of the mattress.
A single mattress will only require two straps from end to end whilst a double size or larger may require three as shown in Figure 2.
Preferably the loops or hooks have elastic properties which, combined with the adjustable straps, allow the sheet to be stretched across the bed and ensure that it does not tear when it is laid upon. The poles are lightweight and sufficiently inflexible to stretch the sheet evenly. Preferably the poles for the sides of the mattress and for the ends of a double or larger mattress will be two-piece with a simple connector to facilitate their insertion and removal.
With the straps in place the bed sheet can be fitted and removed with ease. To fit the sheet as shown in Figure 4 the poles are first inserted into the sleeves at each end of the sheet. The loops or hooks at the head end of the mattress are then attached to the exposed portion of the pole. The same is then done at the foot end of the mattress and the adjustable straps are used to stretch the sheet. If desired poles could then be inserted into the sleeves at the sides and attached using straps laid from side to side. Alternatively the sheet could be fitted using only poles at the sides. Clearly the use of poles at both the ends and the sides will fix the sheet most securely. 3.

Claims (5)

  1. Claims I. An item of bed linen having removable poles which form a frame
to which a set of straps are attached to hold the bed linen in place on a mattress.
  2. 2. An item of bed linen according to claim I having sleeves along two or more opposing edges into which poles can be inserted to create a frame.
  3. 3. An item of bed linen having sleeves according to claim 2 which are discontinuous providing discrete points at which a strap can be attached.
  4. 4. Removable poles according to claim I having dimensions which fit a sleeve extending along the length or width of an item of bed linen and having properties which will allow the item of bed linen to be stretched over a mattress
  5. 5. A set of straps according to claim I consisting of two or more adjustable straps each designed to fit the width and! or length of a mattress, each strap having a ioop or hook at both ends designed to provide a quick connection between the strap and a pole.
