Abstract

242,441. Horne, B. Nov. 14, 1924. Road-contouring apparatus. - Apparatus for recording the contour of a surface such as a stretch of road, comprises a carriage 1 mounted on wheels 2, 3 so that it can be moved along a track consisting of boards &c. progressively laid in sections in advance of the carriage. A lever 6 pivoted to the carriage has at one end a wheel 5 in contact with the ground, and at its other end is connected by a link 9 to a rack 11 operating a pinion 12 which is fast with a pinion 14 operating a rack 16 carrying a stylus 17, which is thus moved in accordance with the vertical movements of the wheel 5 produced by undulations &c. in the road. A band of record paper is drawn from a spool 18 over a platen 19 where it is marked by the stylus, and then passes between rollers 20, 21 to a storage spool 22. The rollers 20, 21 are driven from the wheel 2 by gearing including a clutch 26 which can be, operated by a lever 33 to disconnect the drive. The spool 22 is driven from the roller 21 by a flexible belt 30 permitting the transmission ratio to vary with the effective diameter of the spool.
