Abstract
A floor covering for live animals, particularly cattle, comprises a substantially liquid impermeable layer 6 such as vinyl thermoplastic, geosynthetic or rubber sheet on top of a first deformable layer 4 and a second deformable layer 8 on top of the liquid impermeable layer. The deformable layers may be sand, straw or expanded polymer particles. This provides a soft layer of material into which the hooves of an animal can enter and disrupt and a small amount of material to soak up excrement and liquids.
Description
Floor Covering The present invention relates to the provision of a floor
covering for, in particular, cattle stalls.
Cattle are usually brought inside during winter months to avoid the harshest conditions outdoors, and are kept in stalls. The flooring of stalls is usually concrete, and is generally covered by a substance such as straw, sand or matting which provide the cattle with comfort and warmth during their time inside.
However, thick layers of soft coverings such as straw have a tendency to soak up animal excrement and this can be a factor leading to the spread of disease. The known materials as referred to above are not very costeffective, as they require frequent cleaning in order to maintain an acceptable level of hygiene, plus a substantial thickness of material. They also need fairly frequent replacing.
Hard floors may damage the animal's knees, hocks and hooves and be a cause of mastitis or teat damage. Treatment of any of these conditions can be expensive, and could lead, for example, to an early culling of a high yielding animal.
Furthermore, there may be unseen discomfort to the animal which can result in a significant loss of production. It is therefore important to provide a comfortable environment for the cattle, because an animal displaying any of the above symptoms performs a great deal below potential. The animal is required to take considerable pressure on a small area, for example, on the knees.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved floor covering or the like for use in a rest stall, which alleviates some of the aforementioned problems.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of laying a floor covering for live animals, the floor covering comprising laying a substantially liquid impermeable layer on top of a first deformable layer, and laying a second deformable layer on top of said liquid impermeable layer.
This advantageously provides a soft layer of material into which the hooves of an animal can enter and disrupt, and a small amount of material which may soak up liquids and excrement.
The second deformable layer is preferably of a smaller volume than the first deformable layer.
The second layer of deformable material is preferably of smaller depth than the first layer of deformable material. This provides the advantage that only a small amount of deformable material (for example sand) is wasted when the stall is cleaned out, compared to the thickness and comfort provided to the animal.
The liquid impermeable material may or may not be secured to an immovable structure such as a wall or floor by fastening means. For example, the fastening means could be nails, screws, bolts, etc. The liquid impermeable layer is preferably a vinyl thermoplastic material or a geo- synthetic fabric, and preferably comprises a non-slip surface on the upper facing surface. Alternatively, the liquid impermeable material may be a rubber sheet or any other water resistant material of high tensile strength and high durability, such that the material is not damaged by sudden movements of cattle.
The deformable material is preferably particulate, and the particles are preferably liquid impermeable. Even more preferably the deformable material is sand.
The surface covering as a whole has the advantage of being soft whilst easy to clean and therefore hygienic. The soft surface also allows the animal to get up and down with ease.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a floor covering for live animals comprising a substantially liquid impermeable layer on top of a first deformable layer, and a second deformable layer on top of said liquid impermeable layer.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a floor covering for live animals, when in use, comprising a substantially liquid impermeable layer on top of a first deformable layer, and a second deformable layer on top of said liquid impermeable layer.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a floor covering for live animals comprising a substantially deformable layer in direct communication with the ground, and a substantially liquid impermeable material on top of said substantially deformable layer.
The present invention will be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 is a schematic side view of the laminate layering of the floor covering.
Referring to figure 1, in a preferred embodiment of the present invention covering the surface of the floor 2 (usually fabricated of concrete) is a layer of sand 4. Sand is cheap, is deformable under pressure and provides good insulating properties for the comfort of the animal. Onto this layer of sand 4 is placed a layer of liquid impermeable material 6, such as a vinyl thermoplastic material or geo-synthetic fabric or rubber sheet, which acts to prevent animal excretions passing into the underlying layer of sand 4. This layer of material 6 may be cut to the required shape of the stall, and secured by, for example, tacks or nails. A further layer of sand 8 or any other suitable material is placed on the upper surface of the impermeable material 6. The thickness of this layer is of a significantly reduced depth than the layer 4. This provides a substantial thickness of soft material for the comfort of the animal and good insulation properties to retain the heat of the animal's body, whilst enabling only a - small amount of material to be wasted when the stall area is cleaned out. This also ensures that there is a reduced chance of infection breeding due to the reduced thickness of soft material soaking up animal excrement and the ease with which the material 6 can be cleaned.
In a less complicated embodiment, the top layer of sand is removed, and the animal is in direct contact with the layer of impermeable material. Although not providing as great a degree of comfort to the animal, the surface remains soft and provides good insulating properties.
It will be appreciated that a variety of deformable materials may be used in combination with, or in preference to, sand, such as for example straw or an expanded polymer. An expanded polymer or the like may be particularly beneficial for use as the first deformable layer as this is shielded from direct contact with animals by the liquid impermeable layer, and provides an elastically deformable layer.
The present invention has been described by way of example only, and it will be appreciated by a person skilled in the art that variations and modifications can be made to the present invention without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
