Abstract

A tent has double walls (d) joined by ribs (c), air vents (a), and injection points (b) whereby plastics foam such as polyurethane or polystyrene can be injected to erect the tent, and on setting, the foam maintains the tent erect and also provides insulated walls.

Description

EXPANDED CELLULAR PLASTIC TENT SYSTEM
This invention refers to an expanded cellular plastic tent system.
A tent is normally constructed by fitting weatherproof matenal over a rigid frame constructed of poles. The tent is pegged to the ground by means of guy ropes and pegs.
According to the present invention an expanded cellular plastic tent system has no frame. The tent section is double walled and is fabric construction (polythene, canvas or similar material). The two walls are held together, at intervals, by ribs or spines formed from a similar material to the tent walls. Connections are provided to allow injection of a polyurethane or styrene based expanded cellular plastic material using a portable foam injection system.
The tent section is equipped with vents to allow air to exhaust.
Foam is injected into the area between the walls and in doing so inflates the unit.
Once the injection is complete the foam cures and the construction is semi-permanent, self supporting, weatherproof and has good insulation properties. The tent can then be pegged to the ground.
In areas where there are large numbers of displaced persons (disaster or civil unrest) it is usual to provide tents as temporary accommodation. A major disadvantage is that tents have little or no temperature insulation qualities. This invention overcomes this problem.
Transportation of building materials is also problematic due to weight and bulk.
The "expanded cellular plastic tent system" is easily transported as, in the kit form, it has little bulk or weight, consisting of: (I) The tent unit (2) The foam injection kit The systems can be easily air dropped.
Several tent units can be filled from one foam injection kit, alternatively the foam can be transported overland in bulk containers. 2..
The specific embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of exam with reference to the accompanyjn dia2ram which shows: The general construction of the "Expanded cellular plastic tent system" Where: (a) are air vents.
(b) are tilling connections.
(c) is a detail of ribs or spines which hold the double walls together.
(d) demonstrates the double wall arrangement.
(e) indicates the space tilled with expanded cellular plastic foam.
(The filling connections, vents and ribs are not necessarily in the locations shown as the diagram is primarily to demonstrate the principle) For ease of understanding the diagram is to demonstrate the principle only.
No access doors or ventilation openings are shown.
Tent shapes vary and the diagram is not intended to indicate that the tent section on the invention is necessarily of an "igloo" shape.

Claims (6)

  1. I. The expanded cellular plastic tent system consists of two units (a) a double walled tent and (b) a portable cellular plastic injection unit.
  2. 2. The expanded cellular plastic tent system (tent section) has double walls held together by ribs or spines formed from the same or similar material as the tent section walls
  3. 3. The tent section mentioned in claims I and 2 is provided with injection connections and vents to allow injection of polyusethane or styrene based cellular plastic from a portable unit and displacement of air.
  4. 4. The expanded cellular plastic tent system portable cellular injection unit contains the raw materials to produce expanded cellular plastic.
  5. 5. The injection unit mentioned in claim 4 is fitted with hoses and nozzles to inject the expanded cellular plastic foam into the tent sections.
  6. 6. The expanded cell War plastic tent system is described herein with reference to the diagrams.
