Description

Title: Method of Securing A Panel in a Frame
Description of Invention
This invention relates to a method of securing a panel, such as a double glazed panel construction, in a frame, such as a window frame. However the invention may be applied to other frames such as door or building frames in which a panel, which may be transparent, translucent or opaque, is to be secured.
According to a first aspect of the invention we provide a method a securing a panel in a generally rectangular opening afforded by a frame, the frame including first, second, third and fourth frame sides arranged with the first and third frame sides, and second and fourth frame sides respectively, being generally parallel with the first and third frame sides extending between the second and fourth frame sides, the frame sides each providing at least one abutment which projects inwardly of the opening and in use abuts one side of the panel to locate the panel in the opening, the method including placing the panel in the opening, locating the panel with the abutments, connecting to each of the frame sides, a respective beading member which extends inwardly of the opening, along the respective frame side, in close proximity to the second panel side, characterised in that at least two of the beading members which extend along adjacent frame sides, are shorter than the respective lengths of the opening afforded by the respective adjacent frame sides, providing a cover member at a corner of the opening where the two adjacent frame sides meet, connecting the cover member relative to the beading members to as to conceal ends of the beading members at the corner.
Thus by performing the method of the invention, there is no requirement to mitre the ends of the beading members to fit in the corner of the frame, but S. * S * * * * * : : * : * S S * S * * * S.. S S S * S.. 5 the ends of the beading members may for example, thus be cut generally square, as the ends are concealed by the cover member.
Preferably the cover member includes first and second integrally formed limbs, which provide a corner feature between them, the corner feature being aligned with the corner of the opening where the two adjacent frame sides meet.
Preferably the beading members each include a base which extends along the respective frame side and provides a projecting formation received in use by a receiving formation of the frame side for connecting the beading member to the frame side, and an abutment surface which extends alongside the second panel side, and an exposed visible surface part between the base and abutment surface. The first and second limbs of the cover member may each emulate the configuration of the exposed visible surface part so that the cover member gives the appearance of being an integral continuation of the beading members whose ends it conceals.
In a preferred arrangement, the cover member is connected to one or each of the beading members whose ends it conceals, for example with the respective limbs overlying and snap interfitting with the concealed ends of the beading members. In another arrangement though, additionally or alternatively, the cover member may be retained relative to one or each of the beading members whose ends it conceals, and is secured to the second sides of the panel by adhesive e.g. adhesive tape.
The invention is partiôularly but not exclusively applicable to a frame in which each of the frame sides are extruded sections, e.g. in a plastic material such as PVC-U. Thus the beading members may be extruded too, and the cover member may be moulded. Desirably, the cover member includes an integrally or co-moulded seal which seals against the second side of the panel. The abutment surfaces of the beading members may also each include an integrally provided, e.g. co-extruded, or attached seal, to seal against the second side of the panel.

a... * S * : : ** .:. . : : S * S S * * S S 555 S S S S S.. S In a preferred embodiment, all four of the beading members are shorter than the respective lengths of the opening afforded by the respective adjacent frame sides, and a cover member is provided at each corner of the opening where the adjacent frame sides meet, so as to conceal respective ends of the beading members at the corners.
According to a second aspect of the invention we provide a cover member for use in the method of the first aspect of the invention, the cover member being adapted to be connected relative to ends of two adjacent beading members at a frame corner.
The cover member may have any of the features of the cover member described in relation to performing the method of the first aspect of the invention.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- FIGURE 1 is a partially exploded and illustrative perspective view of part of a frame in which a panel is securable by the method of the invention; FIGURES 2a and 2b are respectively a side sectional view through a frame side of the frame of figure 1 taken immediately adjacent a corner of the frame and a perspective illustrative view of a cover member; FIGURES 3a and 3b are respectively, views similar to figures 2a and 2b but of a modified embodiment.
Referring to figures 1 and 2 of the drawings a generally rectangular frame 10 is provided by four frame sides, only two of which can be seen in figure 1 at 12 and 13. As is conventional, in the example described, the frame sides 12, 13 are mitred and connected together by welding at the corners C of the frame 10, but could otherwise be connected together as desired, e.g. by bolting. In each case though, the frame 10 is provided by a pair of generally parallel frame sides of which frame side 12 is one, which frame sides 12 extend between the other pair of generally parallel frame sides of which frame side 13 * S *** - * S S S * S 5 * S S * S S a 5. S S ** *** S S S * S S S S * * * S a.. * S S S * S.. * is one, to provide the generally rectangular frame 10 with four internal corners C where adjacent frame sides 12, 13 meet and are connected as described.
In the example described, the frame sides 12, 13 are provided by extruded PVC-U sections, and in this example include integrally formed upstands 15, 16 respectively which extend along the entire lengths of the frame sides, and provide abutments for location of a panel 18 (not seen in figure 1 but see figure 3a) in an opening 20 afforded by the four frame sides 12, 13.
The upstands 15, 16 each provide respective grooves 15a, 16a for gaskets which provide a seal against a first side 21 of the panel 18.
In this example, the panel 18 is a double glazed assembly so that the first panel side 21 is constituted by a side of a first glazing sheet, whereas an opposite second panel side 22, is constituted by a side of a second glazing sheet.
The invention may be applied where the panel 18 is provided by a single or more than two glazing sheets, or by another panel 18 construction altogether such as an insulated door panel, a timber panel or other.
To secure the panel 18 in the opening 20 afforded by the frame 10, the panel 18 is located against the upstands 15, 16, and then beading members 25, 26 are connected to the four respective frame sides 12, 13 to entrap the panel 18 between the upstands 15, 16 and the beading members 25, 26. To enable the beading members 25, 26 and frame sides 12, 13 to be connected, the beading members 25, 26 each have a projection 25a, 26a from a respective base 25c, 26c, which projections 25a, 26a may each be snap fitted in a respective groove 12a, 13a along the respective frame side 12, 13. The beading members 25, 26 in this example have abutment surfaces 25d, 26d with co-extruded seals 25b, 26b which seal against the second panel side 22. In an alternative embodiment, the beading members 25, 26 may be slid into their grooves 12a, 13a or may be otherwise connected to their respective frame sides 12, 13, particularly where the frame sides 12, 13 may not be plastic extruded sections. In each case, the * * S..
* S S S S S S S'S ** : : *e: * * * S * * * * S * S.. S * 5.5 *S beading members 25, 26 each have an exposed surface 25e, 26e between the respective base 25c, 26c and abutment surface 25d, 26d, the exposed surfaces 25e, 26e being visible in the final frame construction and being of a concave, or as shown convex, profile, both to provide for rain run-off (where the beading members 25, 26 are in use at the outside if a building for example) and to provide a decorative effect.
In each corner C of the frame 10, between the frame sides 12, 13, conventionally the beading members 25, 26 would be mitred to provide a pleasing appearance, and to provide a weatherproof joint where the beading members 25, 26 are at the exterior of a building. The beading members 25, 26 are cut to length and mitred, usually on site where the frame is to be installed as for example, a window or door frame, or a frame of a building construction such as a conservatory. Obviously a perfect corner mitre can only be achieved by cutting the beading members 25, 26 exactly to the lengths of the opening 20 along which they extend, and this takes skill.
In accordance with the invention though, a cover member 30 is provided, which is formed as a separate moulding to the beading members 25, 26, the cover member 30 in use, being located in the corner C between the frame sides 12, 13.
Thus rather that mitring the beading members 25, 26 ends, these may be cut generally square, short of the length of the opening 20 side along which the beading members 25, 26 extend. The beading members 25, 25 are connected to their frame sides 12, 13, but at the corner C, the cover member 30 conceals the square cut ends of the beading members 25, 26.
The cover member 30 includes a pair of limbs 31, 32 integrally provided as a moulding, with a corner feature C' between them, the corner feature C' being aligned with the corner C of the opening 20 where the two adjacent frame sides 12, 13 meet. The first and second limbs 31, 32 of the cover member 30 may each emulate the configuration of the exposed visible surfaces 25e, 26e of * * *** * * S S * S * * S * * *. * : * : . : * * S S * S *.* * S S 5 the beading members 25, 26, so that the cover member 30 gives the appearance of being an integral continuation of the beading members 25, 26 whose ends it conceals. Thus in this example, the limbs 31, 32 may be convex with the corner feature C' between the convex limbs 31, 32.
In the example shown in figures 1, 2a and 2b, the cover member 30 is connected to one or each of the beading members 25, 26 whose ends it conceals, for example with the respective limbs 31, 32 overlying and snap interfitting with the concealed ends of the beading members 25, 26. In another arrangement though, additionally or alternatively, the cover member 30 may be connected to one or each of the frame sides 25, 26 at the corner C and/or to the panel 18 the beading members 25, 26 retain. For example, as shown in figures 3a and 3b, each limb 31, 32 of the cover member 30 includes a foot 36 which is retained in the respective groove 12a, 13a of the frame side 12, 13 in which the projections 25a, 26a of' the beading members 25, 26 are snap interfitted, by virtue of the cover member 30 being adhered with strips of double sided adhesive tape 35, 36 to the second side 22 of the panel 18.
The cover member 30 may include for each limb 31, 32 an integrally provided or co-moulded seal 33 which seals against the second side 22 of the panel 18 so as to provide weatherproofing in the corner C. It will be appreciated that by virtue of the invention, to provide good beading member 25, 26 corners on site, a lesser degree of skill is required that at present, as the cover members 30 may tolerate beading members 25, 26 whose lengths have been mis-cut, which would be unacceptable where a mitred corner joint is made.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as will be apparent to those skilled in the art. For example, the configurations of the frame sides 12, 13, the beading members 25, 26 and the cover member 30 may be different to the examples described and may be made in other materials as desired. For example the upstands 15, 16 of the frame S..
* . S * * * * : : *5 *** * . . * * * * * S * : S.. a * ..* S. sides 12, 13 need not be integrally provided with the remainder of the frame sides 12, 13 but may be provided as separate extrusions or otherwise, and connected to the frame sides 12, 13 to provide the upstands 15, 16.
The beading members 25, 26 need not have integral gaskets 25b, 26b but may include slide in or other attachable gaskets to form seals between the beading members 25,26 and the second side 22 of the panel 18.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may, separately, or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
