Abstract

The fishing line preferably comprises a braid of non-elasticated strands glued together by a water soluble polyvinyl alcohol adhesive. When the non-elasticated line is immersed in water the adhesive dissolves which allows the braid's strands to realign. The disclosed line includes core strands 14 of water soluble or elastomeric material and braided strands 12 adhered together by PVA. The line is used for forming a hook link and can be elastically elongated by 30-75%.

Description

FISHING LINE
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to a fishing line.
Background of the invention
In certain types of angling rig, a hook is tied by a length of line, termed a hook link, to a swivel joint fitted within a lead weight. The hook link is normally made of a length of conventional fishing line.
Summary of the invention
According to the present invention, there is provided a fishing line for forming a hook link which line is elasticated when immersed in water.
The invention is predicated on the discovery that a fish experiences more difficulty in disengaging itself from a hook on an elasticated line than from a hook attached to a line that does not stretch. The elasticity of the line is believed to assist in preventing the hook from being pulled out even if the fish has yet to become fully impaled on it.
It is preferred for the line not to be elasticated prior to being immersed in water, so that it can be cut to the desired length and tied to the hook and the swivel in the normal manner.
The line is preferably formed as a braid of non- elasticated strands, the stretching of the line being achieved by alteration of the alignment of the strands in the braid. In this way, the line can only be stretched up to a certain limit. Beyond that limit the line ceases to be elasticated and acts as a conventional line.
One approach that may be adopted to prevent the line from stretching or contracting before it is immersed in water would be to glue the strands to one another using a water soluble adhesive. This can be performed by simply coating the braided line with the adhesive while the line is stretched and allowing it to dry. Polyvinyl alcohol is a suitable adhesive for this purpose and has previously been used in other fishing applications, for example for controlled release of bait into the water. It should however be stressed that the invention is not restricted to any particular manner of preventing the line from being elasticated prior to immersion in water.
Brief description of the drawing
The invention will now be described further by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a fishing line embodying the invention.
Description of the preferred embodiment
The single drawing shows a typical braided line 10 which is comprised of strands 12 braided around core strands 14. The manufacture of such lines is well known and need not therefore be described within the present context.
Conventionally, such lines use core strands that have little or no elasticity. Such elasticity as they have is not there intentionally. Typically lines of good quality may stretch by as little as 3-4% while less expensive lines may stretch by up to 20%. By contrast, in the present invention, the line is intentionally designed to be elasticated, at least after it has been immersed in water, being capable of being elongated elastically by typically 30% to 75% of its length, and possibly even more. While presenting advantages in making short hook lines, a line of the invention would not be practical for normal angling.
The elasticity of the line may be achieved by forming the core strands 14 of an elastic, preferably elastomeric, material. In place of individual strands, one may use a tube of elastic material about which the strands 12 are braided.
If the line is not be elasticated until it is immersed in water, the braid strands 12 may be adhered to one another by the use of a water soluble adhesive, such as PVA, while the braided line is held taut. As an alternative, the core strands 14 may themselves be formed of such a water soluble material to prevent the collapse of the braiding until the core has dissolved.
Once it has been immersed in water, the hook link will remain elasticated but that does not prevent it from being re-used. The only reason for wishing to maintain the line at its fully extended length when it is new is to enable it to be cut accurately to the desired length and tied in the normal manner. However, once a hook link of the desired extended length has been made, its elasticity does not preclude it from being used in the normal manner.
