Abstract

A combined light and air extraction device comprises a space 10 between an outer housing 1 and a lamp housing 7 for the passage of extracted air, a removable circular cover 20 having a wall 21 below the lamp housing 7, the cover 20 having a glass disc 24 spaced above an aperture 23 in the cover 20, and an opening 26 and vanes 25 on the cover 20 between the wall 21 and the glass disc 24 to impart a circumferential motion of the air passing through the opening 26. Outer housing 1 is clamped to a ceiling 2 by legs 6 and a flange 5 cooperating with a bezel ring trim 12. Lamp housing 7 is supported on the outer housing 1 by radial beams 17 and the vanes 25 may be curved and support the glass disc 24. The device may be used in a bathroom and the curved vanes 25 generating a circumferential or vortex air flow aids in cooling of the lamp 9.

Description

13185:CP Combined Light and Extractor Fitting The invention relates to a
combined light and extractor fitting.
Building regulations now require that all bathrooms have some form of extraction to remove moisture from the room. One of the largest producers of moisture in a bathroom is the shower. To remove the moisture at source extractor vents are placed in the ceiling above the shower, this often gets in the way of any lighting that may also be required; therefore combined units have been developed to overcome this problem. However the light fitting must be protected from splashing water from the shower, this means enclosing the front of the vent with a splash guard which restricts airflow and causes the vent housing to over heat and sometimes melt. One solution for overcoming this problem has been simply to reduce the wattage of the lamp employed in the fitting. This has obvious disadvantages from the lighting point of view.
The present invention provides a fitting with a cover which prevents the lamp from being directly splashed with water whilst allowing air to flow over the lamp for cooling.
Accordingly, the invention provides a combined light and extractor fitting for location in an aperture in a ceiling comprising: an outer housing adapted to be clamped to the ceiling around the aperture; a lamp housing supported on the outer housing with a spacing between the lamp housing and the outer housing for the passage of air being extracted; and a circular cover supported on the fitting below the lamp housing to shield the 13185: CP lamp housing; wherein the cover has a lower wall with a circular aperture located below the lamp housing and supports a glass disc spaced above the aperture to define an annular opening for the passage of air generally radially outwardly between the lower wall and the glass disc; and wherein a plurality of vanes are provided on the cover adjacent the annular opening to impart circumferential motion to air passing through the annular opening.
Air flow is improved by means of the vanes which set up a vortex or circumferential motion in the air. This increases the flow of air up through the fitting and significantly aids in cooling of the lamp. A reduction in 15 C in the temperature of the lamp has been recorded.
Embodiments of the invention are described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a fitting; Figure 2 is an underneath view of the fitting; Figure 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the fitting located in a ceiling panel; Figure 4 is a plan view of the fitting; Figure 5 is a side view of a cover of the fitting; Figure 6 is a rear view of the cover; and Figure 7 is a perspective view of the cover from the rear.
A combined light and extractor fitting for location in an aperture in a ceiling is shown in Figures 1 to 4 and comprises an outer housing 1 adapted to be clamped to the 13185:CP ceiling around the aperture. In Figure 3, a section of ceiling panel 2 is shown. The outer housing comprises a generally cylindrical waIl 4 which in use will be connected by ducting (not shown) to an extractor fan (not shown) for drawing air through the fitting to an exhaust outlet (not shown).
The housing has a bezel ring partly formed by a flange 5 which bears on the underside of the ceiling panel around the aperture. Clamping legs 6, adjustably mounted on the outside of the outer housing 1, bear on the upperside of the ceiling panel and thus cooperate with the bezel ring flange 5 to hold the fitting in the aperture.
A lamp housing 7 is supported centrally within the outer housing 1 via radial beams 8. As shown in Figure 3, the lamp housing supports a lamp 9 which is arranged to direct light downwardly. An annular spacing 10 between the lamp housing 7 and the outer housing 1 provides a passage for air being extracted through the fitting.
A bezel ring trim 12 is fitted to the bezel ring flange 5. The bezel ring flange 5 and the bezel ring trim 12 together form a bezel ring which may be formed as a single element.
The bezel ring trim has an outer annular part 14 and an inner cylindrical wall section 16 connected to the outer part 14 through beams 17.
A circular cover 20 is removably supported on the fitting below the lamp housing 7 to shield the lamp housing from splashing with water. The cover has a frustro-comical lower wall 21 which is connected to a cylindrical wall 22 extending axially upwardly from 13185:CP the outer edge of the lower wall 21. A circular aperture 23 in the lower wall 21 of the cover is located directly below the lamp housing 7 and thus directly below the lamp 9. A glass disc 24 is supported on the lower wall by a plurality of vanes 25 provided on the upper surface of the lower wall. The vanes extend generally radially outwards and are curved in the horizontal plane.
An annular opening 26 is defined between the lower wall 21 of the cover and the glass disc 24 for the passage of air generally radially outwardly. The vanes 25, which may be inclined to the radial direction or curved as shown, deflect the air passing through the opening 26 to impart a circumferential motion to the air.
The cover 20 is snap-fitted to the bezel ring trim 12 by means of posts 30 upstanding from alternate ones of the vanes. The tops of the posts 30 have hooks which fit over the upper edge of the inner cylindrical wall section 16 of the bezel ring 12. The inner cylindrical wall section 16 forms an upward extension of the cylindrical wall 22 of the cover.
The disc 24 is made of glass to avoid melting from the heat of the lamp 9. The rest of the cover is also preferably transparent, both to allow light through into the room below, and reduce the amount of heat absorbed from the lamp.
A further annular air passage 30 is between the outer part 14 of the bezel ring trim 12 and cover 20 as extended by the inner cylindrical wall section 16. This is the main 13185: CP passage for air through the fitting and air flow through this passage induces air flow through the opening in the cover for cooling of the lamp and the cover.
