The markings A, B may be provided on both sides of the alignment portion 2 and may comprise grooves on the internal side and corresponding protrusions on the external side. The external surface of the support portion may have ribs 12.
Description
Gable end profile The present invention relates to a gable end profile for
a building and, in particular, to a gable end profile for retaining glazing panels in a glazed roof assembly.
Known gable end profiles for retaining glazing panels in a glazed roof assembly generally comprise an F section profile as described below with reference to figure 3. Different sizes of such F section profiles are required to accommodate a wide range of glazing material thickness so that many stock sizes are required.
The present invention has been made from a consideration of this disadvantage associated with such known gable end profiles and in order to provide an :.:. improved gable end profile, which can be used with * 20 glazing panels of any thickness.
According to the invention there is provided a gable end profile for a glazed roof assembly comprising an elongate member having a substantially L shaped cross- * : 25 section defined by an alignment portion and a support * * portion, the alignment portion comprising one or more markings to facilitate alignment, in use, of an external surface of the support portion with an external surface of a glazing panel.
Preferably, such markings are in the form of grooves and/or protrusions. Preferably, the markings are located at predetermined distances from the external surface of the support portion. Preferably, the predetermined distances are 10mm, 16mm, 20mm, 24mm and 30mm.
Preferably, the markings are provided on both sides of the alignment portion. Preferably, one or more grooves are provided on an internal side and one or more corresponding protrusions are provided on an external side of the alignment portion.
Preferably, the alignment portion comprises one or more apertures adapted to receive fixing means for securing the alignment portion to a wall in use.
Preferably, the external surface of the support portion comprises a series of ribs. Preferably, such ribs are equally spaced and extend substantially parallel to the longitudinal dimension of the profile. * *. * * S *** a
Preferably, the profile is adapted to be positioned, in use, adjacent a wall so that the support portion extends over an upper edge of the wall and the alignment portion extends down an external face of the wall, such that when a marking is aligned with the a.....
* 25 upper edge of the wall the external surface of the support portion aligns with an external surface of a glazing panel located on the wall The invention will now be described further, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a crosssectional view of a gable end profile of the invention; Fig. 2 is a crosssectional view showing the gable end profile of figure 1, in use, on a glazed roof assembly; and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view showing a conventional gable end profile, in use, on a glazed roof assembly.
Referring to figure 1, a gable end profile 1 of the invention comprises an elongate member having a substantially L shaped cross-section defined by an alignment portion 2 and a support portion 4, the length of the alignment portion generally being greater than, typically more than twice the length of, the support portion.
The alignment portion 2 comprises a series of markings in the form of grooves or notches 6 and/or pips or protrusions 8 to facilitate alignment, in use, of the *0' external surface 5 of the support portion 4 with the external surface of a glazing panel. The markings 6, 8 are located at predetermined distances from the **.S..
* 25 external surface 5 of the support portion, typically at 10mm, 16mm, 20mm, 24mm and 30mm, indicated by references A to E, to accommodate glazing panels of corresponding thickness.
Typically, the markings are provided on both sides of the alignment portion, for example grooves 6 on the internal side and corresponding protrusions 8 on the external side thereof.
Typically, the alignment portion 2 is provided with apertures at suitable locations to receive fixing means, such as screws 10, for securing the alignment portion to a wall in use.
The external surface 5 of support portion 4 comprises a series of ribs or serrations 12, typically equally spaced therealong and extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal dimension of the profile, to facilitate location of a capping bar which straddles across the gable end profile and the glazing panel, in use.
Referring to figure 2, in use, a glazing panel 20 is located on a wall 22 and the gable end profile 1 of the invention is positioned adjacent the wall so that the support portion 4 extends over the upper edge 23 of the wall. The markings 6, 8 are used to align the external *::::* 20 surface 5 of the support portion 4 with the external surface 21 of a glazing panel by sight positioning the marking corresponding to the thickness of glazing panel being used with the edge 23 of the wall.
For example, in figure 2, a 16mm glazing panel is shown * and the profile 1 is adjusted so that the 16mm groove 6 and protrusion 8, indicated by reference B, are aligned with the edge 23 of the wall. It is noted that the 10mm marking, indicated by reference A, then lies above the edge 23 of the wall.
In this position, the external surface 5 of the support portion 4 is accurately aligned with the external surface 21 of the glazing panel 20. The profile 1 is then secured to the wall 22, which may be the gable end of the building or facia, by screws 10 which pass through the alignment portion into the wall.
A capping bar 24 is then installed to span the gap between the gable end profile 1 and the glazing panel 20, an edge of the capping bar 24 being located behind one of the serrations 12 of the support portion 4.
Thus, it will be seen that, unlike conventional profiles, the gable end profile of the invention can accommodate any thickness of glazing material, the specific embodiment described being adapted to accommodate glazing panels with a thickness in the range 10mm upwards.
Figure 3 shows a conventional gable end profile in use on a glazed roof assembly. The gable end profile 30 *::::* 20 comprises an elongate F section profile and, in use, a glazing panel 20 is pushed between the jaws 32 of the F section. The leg 34 of the F section extends down adjacent the wall 22 of the building and is screwed thereto by screw 36.

*SS...
* Since each thickness of glazing panel 20 requires a corresponding jaw spacing to receive the panel, many stock sizes of such gable end profiles are required to cater for the wide variety of glazing panel thickness available.
By contrast, the gable end profile of the invention does not have this limitation since it can be positioned in line with the external surface of the glazing.
Typical dimensions of the gable end profile of the invention are: thickness 2mm; support portion length 20mm; alignment portion length 48mm; 900 angle between support portion and alignment portion; 0.5mm serrations and five 0.5mm by 0.75mm blips and corresponding v- grooves.
Typically, the gable end profile of the invention comprises a substantially constant cross-section extrusion, for example of aluminium or uPVC.
It will be appreciated that expressions of orientation or direction, such as "internal", "external" and the like, are used for convenience only and refer to the normal orientation of the gable end profile in a glazed :.:: roof assembly as illustrated in the accompanying ****. 20 drawings. However, such expressions are not to be * regarded as limiting the orientation of the gable end profile in use. ***
S
It will be appreciated that the present invention is * S*S ** * 25 not intended to be restricted to the details of the S...., * above embodiment, which is described by way of example only.
