Abstract
An automotive head up display system projects relevant vehicle information onto a windscreen collector from a roof mounted projection unit. The windscreen collector is a holographic screen and the information digitally displayed may include speed, acceleration, distance of preceding traffic, and road surface temperature. The information is sent to the projection unit using a carbon fibre cable.
Description
1 2420536 Title Automotive head up display system (HUD).
Background
This system provides a superimposed transparent display on the car windscreen of speed acceleration, dc-acceleration, distance measuring data of preceding traffic and road service temperature. The driver has this information in front of him. The driver does not need to take his eyes off the road to check the dashboard instruments. This system could be used in buses, lorries and trains. A similar system has been applied successfully to civil aircraft flight operations for precision approaches and landing guidance.
Statement of invention
The present invention provides a mounted projection unit on the inside car ceiling which produces holographic images of speed, acceleration, deacceleration, distance measuring data of preceding traffic and road surface temperature onto the drivers windscreen.
Advantages In a busy traffic environment the driver focuses head up while reading the projected windscreen information without the need to head down to look at the dashboard instruments which in turn could cause a lapse in road awareness.
Introduction of drawings
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the following pictures - Figure 1 shows position of the projection unit in the automobile.
- Figure 2 shows position of the windscreen collector unit on the windscreen area of the automobile.
- Figure 3 shows the automotive acquisition unit within the HUD system in the automobile.
Detailed description
The automotive electronic speedometer system, distance measuring data of preceding traffic and road temperature sensing unit provides the basic requirements through cabling to the overhead car ceiling mounted projection unit. The projection unit converts this information into holographic images. The holographic images are produced on a lens and projected onto the windscreen. The holographic transparent images are screened through a collector on the windscreen. The collector is a transparent layer placed across the inside of the windscreen. A light dimming de ce already existing in the automobile enables the driver to select either manually or automatically higher or lower intensity for variable driving conditions, for example day or night driving.
Claims (8)
- Claims 1. The automotive head up display system (EJUD) provides the driverwith information of speed, acceleration, de acceleration, distance measuring data of preceding traffic and road surface temperature on the windscreen area of the automobile supplementing conventional dashboard instrument display.
- 2. The automotive head up display system (HUD) is composed of three components. An automotive acquisition unit, a projection unit and a windscreen collector unit.
- 3. The automotive acquisition unit is located in the automobiles electrical compartment.
- 4. The projection unit includes a holographic lens which is located on the ceiling of the automobile in between the two front forward seats.
- 5. The windscreen collector unit is placed on the inside of the windscreen facing the driver. This is a transparent component.
- 6. The automotive acquisition unit as in claim 3, provides electronic data to the projection unit.
- 7. The projection unit displays through a holographic lens the data according to claim 1, to the windscreen collector unit.
- 8. The windscreen collector unit displays holographic data according to claim 1, to be interpreted by the driver.
