Description

A CHASSiS The present invention relates to a chassis for a bed or trolley.
Beds and trolleys, particularly those intended for use in hospitals and other medical establishments, generally include a mattress, tray or other support member mounted on a chassis. The chassis is often provided with wheels to permit movement of the chassis across a floor.
Generally such beds and trolleys are not particularly lightweight or maneuverable, and can become relatively difficult to move in a controlled manner when loaded.
Consequently two or more people are often required to effect movement of such beds and trolleys in order to maintain control and reduce the risk of injuries to operatives, and the risk of injuries or damage that may otherwise be caused in the event of a collision with an obstruction or third party.
A general aim of the invention is to provide a chassis suitable for use in a bed or trolley to enable the bed or trolley to he moved in a controlled and safe manner by a single operative.
According to an aspect of the invention there is provided a chassis having ground engagement members enabling the chassis to move across a floor, the ground engagement members including at least one driven member.
Preferably, the ground engagement members include a pair of wheels mounted on a common axle, the axle being driven by a motor.
Preferably, the chassis defines a front and a rear, the driven wheels being mounted towards the front of the chassis, and at least two ground engagement members being mounted towards the rear of the chassis.
Preferably, a pair of jockey wheels is mounted towards the rear of the chassis; preferably each of which is mounted for 3600 rotation about a vertical axis. * I
* S S I SI. * I $ S I S* S. I I, * II. * I I * ._ I - Preferably, drive to the or each driven wheel is provided by an electric motor mounted on the chassis.
Preferably, the motor includes an emergency cut-off to remove drive to the or each driven wheel when the chassis contacts an obstruction.
Preferably, the emergency cut-off includes a pressure actuatable switch provided on the chassis.
Preferably, the chassis includes a control means to control the speed and/or torque of the motor and thereby control the drive to the or each driven member.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of nonlimiting examples, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figures 1 and 2 show a chassis according to an embodiment of the invention; Figures 3 and 4 show the front of the chassis of Figures 1 and 2; and Figure 5 shows the controls of the chassis of Figures 1 and 2.
A chassis 10 according to an embodiment of the invention is shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The chassis 10 includes a base 12, which is preferably defined by a framework of metal tubes. The metal tubes may he of steel or aluminium.
Preferably the framework, in plan, is rectangular and is made up of two side tubes 14, two end tubes 16 and two cross tubes 18.
The base 12 is adapted for movement over the floor 20 by the provision of two wheels 22 (only one of which is shown) mounted for rotation on a common axle (not shown) towards the front of the base 12, and by the provision of two jockey * S *S* *S* * * * S S S S * * S * S S * S S5* S S S. S * I S S S S S * I S 55 IS S S S S.. U S S S S wheels 24, preferably each of which is mounted for 360 rotation about a vertical axis.
Preferably each of the jockey wheels 24 is provided with a brake so as to enable each of the wheels to be locked in position, when required.
A motor 26 is mounted on the base 12, and operably connected to the axle. The motor 26 is preferably an electric motor powered by a battery 28 mounted on the base 12.
A battery charger 29 is also preferably mounted on the base 12.
In use, operation of the motor 26 drives rotation of the axle, which in turn transfers drive to the wheels 22 in order to drive the base 12 over the floor 20.
The jockey wheels 24 mounted towards the rear of the base 12 provides a means for steering the base 12 during operation of the motor 26 to drive the wheels 22 mounted towards the front of the base 12.
In other embodiments, the positions of the wheels 22 and jockey wheels 24 may be reversed such that the driven wheels 22 are mounted towards the rear of the chassis 10 and the jockey wheels 24 are mounted towards the front of the chassis 10.
It will be appreciated that jockey wheels 24 are only one example of ground engaging members, which enable the trolley to be steered during operation of the motor 26. Other types of ground engaging members, such as ball castors or rollers, may be used instead ofjockey wheels 24.
It will also be appreciated that wheels 22 are only one example of ground engaging members, which may be driven to drive the chassis 10 over the floor 20.
Other types of ground engaging members, such as one or more rollers, may be used instead of wheels 22.
* * S.. *SS S S * . S S * S * S * S S S S *SS S S *S S S S S * S S S S S S SS 55 S S S SSS S S * * . At the rear of the base 12, an upstanding framework 30 is attached which serves as a support frame for a handle 32 for an operative to grip for moving and steering the chassis 10.
The chassis 10 also preferably includes a support framework 34, which, in the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, is in the form of a rectangular frame supporting a plurality of rollers 36.
The frame is preferably formed by two side tubes 38 and two end tubes 40 (Figure 2). The tubes are preferably formed of steel or aluminium.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, the rollers 36 enable an elongate body tray (not shown) to be slid in its longitudinal direction onto and off the support framework 34 by an operative pulling or pushing the tray using handles located at each end of the tray, thereby making the chassis suitable for use as a mortuary trolley.
Preferably the support framework 34 horizontally supports the tray; this facilitates the loading and unloading of a tray onto/from the chassis 10 and also does not encourage movement of the tray in one or other of its longitudinal directions once loaded onto the chassis 10.
A stop (not shown) may be provided, which is engageable with a handle at one end of the tray so as to retain the tray against longitudinal movement. The stop may he in the form of a removable hook member, which overlaps the handle.
In other embodiments, it is envisaged that the support framework 34 may be in the form of a rectangular frame supporting cross members to carry a mattress or other support surface.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, the support framework 34 is operatively connected to the base 12 by an elevation means 42 (Figure 1).

* S S S S 5 5 S * S S S S **S S * S. * S S S * 5 5 5 5 *S *S S * S 5.. S * S S S Preferably the elevation means 42 is in the form of a scissor jack arrangement comprising, on each side of the base 12, a pair of levers 44,46 which are pivotally connected at a mid-location 48. Lever 44 is pivotally connected at one end 50 to the base 12 and is slidingly connected to the support framework 34 at its other end 52. Lever 46 is pivotally connected to the support framework 34 at one end 54 and is slidingly connected to the base 12 at its other end 56.
A hydraulic piston 58 is connected between the base 12 and a cross-member (not shown) extending between the pair of levers 44 for deflecting the levers 44 and thereby causing the support framework 34 to be raised/lowered whilst maintaining the support framework 34 substantially horizontal.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, pressurised hydraulic fluid to raise the support framework 34 is supplied by an electrically powered pump 62 conveniently mounted on the base 12.
The pump 62 is preferably operated by the battery 28 provided to operate the motor 26. However, in other embodiments, a second battery may be mounted on the base 12 to operate the pump 62.
In yet further embodiments, a manually operable pump to supply pressurised hydraulic fluid for raising the support framework 34 may be provided on the upstanding framework 30, for example.
in other embodiments, it is envisaged that the support framework 34 may be connected to the base 12 by a fixed frame structure.
The chassis 10 preferably includes a control means (not shown) to control operation of the motor 26.
In preferred embodiments, the control means is programmable to control the speed and torque of the motor 26. By controlling the output of the motor 26 it is possible * * *** S.. S * * S S * S S * * * S S * S *** S I * * S S * * S S * S S ** *S S S S S.. S * * S S to vary the torque applied to the axle to ensure that the axle is driven at a constant speed. This makes it possible to modify the chassis 10 to suit different topographical situations.
The control means is preferably concealed so that access to the control means is restricted. Operation of the chassis 10 after programming of the control means is preferably facilitated by the provision of a control panel 66 (Figure 5), which permits an operative to operate the chassis 1 0 within the limits of the programmed control means.
The control panel 66 is preferably mounted on the handle 32 to provide easy access to an operative.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 5, the control panel 66 includes a slidable switch 68 for the motor 26, the switch 68 being movable between an "on" position and an "off' position. The control panel 66 preferably includes a rocker switch 70 to control the hydraulic pump 62 for raising and lowering the support framework 34, the rocker switch 70 being movable in a first directed to operate the pump 62 to raise the support framework 34, and being movable in the opposite direction to operate the pump 62 to lower the support framework 34.
The control panel 66 also preferably includes an emergency cut-off switch 72, and a battery indicator 74 to indicate the amount of charge remaining in the battery 28 to power the motor 26.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 5, the control panel 66 also includes a slidable switch 77 to control the motor 26 in order to control the speed of the chassis 10 when the motor 26 is operated to drives wheels 22. Preferably, the switch 77 is movable between two positions, each position corresponding to a different speed and thereby enabling an operative to choose between the two different speeds The control panel 66 also preferably includes a toggle switch 75 to determine the direction in which the motor 26 drives the axle. Preferably, the toggle switch 75 is * * *.s *.. S S * S S * S S S S * S S S S 555 5 5 S. S S S S * S S * * S S 55 ** S * S S.. * * S S S rotatable to determine whether the motor 26 drives the chassis 10 forwards or backwards.
Driving engagement between the motor 26 and the axle is preferably facilitated by means of a clutch (not shown). The clutch is preferably arranged to maintain driving engagement between the motor 26 and the axle unless specifically operated to disengage the motor 26 from the axle.
While the motor 26 is in driving engagement with the axle, movement of the axle is strictly dependent on the motor 26. The motor 26 therefore prevents rotation of the axle and the wheels 22 when the motor 26 is switched off, and provides an effective means to prevent rotation of the wheels 22 and retain the chassis 10 in a desired position on the floor 20.
When the clutch is operated to disengage the motor 26 from the axle, the axle and wheels 22 are effectively unlocked. In this configuration, provided that any brakes on the jockey wheels 24 are released, the chassis 10 may be moved manually over the floor 20.
As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the motor preferably includes a manually operable clutch lever 76 to operate the clutch. The clutch lever 76 is preferably movable between a first position PA where the motor 26 is maintained in driving engagement with the axle and a second position PB where the motor 26 is disengaged from the axle.
The provision of the clutch lever 76 renders it possible to disengage the motor 26 from the axle in circumstances where it is desirable to effect movement of the chassis 10 manually. This may occur if the battery 28 provided to power the motor 26 requires re-charging, for example.
The chassis 10 also preferably includes an emergency cut-off mechanism 78 provided on the front of the base 12.
* * .** .** * * * * * * S S S * * S S S S **S S S S. S S * S S S S S S 5 0 05 05 * 5 0 SSS S S S I * in the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, the emergency cut-off mechanism 78 includes a pressure actuatable member 80 (Figures 3 and 4) extending along the front exterior surface of the end tube 16.
Preferably, when the pressure actuatable member 80 contacts an obstruction, power to the motor is immediately cut-off, removing drive to the axle and thereby preventing rotation of the wheels 22.
Halting movement of the chassis 10 prevents the risk of injury or damage that may otherwise be caused by the collision of the chassis 10 with an obstruction.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, the chassis 10 also includes scales 82 connected to the support framework 34 to determine the mass of a load supported on the support framework 34. The scales 82 are preferably electronic.
In other embodiments, the scales 82 may be omitted.
