Abstract

A rear view mirror that incorporates an automatic air freshener which controls a pulse air system which delivers a fragrance into a vehicle's interior. A rear view mirror 1 which attaches to the vehicle's original mirror (9, fig.7) and then produces a fragrance 7 via an electronically controlled sub-miniature low noise fan (13, fig. 7), this then blows air through or around a removable environmental friendly fragrance cartridge (6, fig 5) that can be easily changed to suit the driver's moods or preferences, within the invention is an electronic control circuit (12, fig.7) which is either powered by internal batteries (10, fig 7) or by the vehicle's own power supply, this control incorporates a cyclic timer with infinitely adjustable "on" and "off" periods thus in practice the invention would overcome the human olfactory system (sense of smell) which becomes accustomed to constant streams of fragrance by providing regular short bursts of fragrance, furthermore the effectiveness of the fragrance is further improved as the gentle short bursts wafting from the rear view mirror are directed towards the driver, in addition would, unlike most "plug in" fragrance devices which require a constant stream of air from the vehicle, operate independent of the vehicle's air condition system so could be utilised even when the engine is not running. The device may automatically discharge a fragrance when the vehicle's ignition or accessory switch is activated or when the vehicle begins to move.

Description

1 241 7422 Rear View Mirror Incorporating Vehicle Air Freshener This
invention relates to a device which is a supplementary rear view mirror the likes of which incorporates an automatic pulse air vehicle air freshener.
Whilst a large number of vehicle air fresheners provide a pleasing fragrance to the interior of a vehicle the means of controlling these devices is often burdensome to the driver as they employ a simple manual adjustment to compensate for the loss of fragrance due to constant evaporation, also many "add on" devices detract from the vehicle's carefully designed interior, furthermore current trends would suggest that an integrated approach is now desirable, subsequently this invention would be suitable not only as an after sales accessory but also as a standard fitting by vehicle manufactures since this area of car comfort has largely been neglected by the car manufacturers When a fragrance is initially installed in to a vehicle it is often over-powering and within a few days becomes weak and ineffective, this infectiveness is further weakened by a person's olfactory system (sense of smell) which causes the person to become accustomed to any fragrance that is constantly present.
To substantially improve the effectiveness, efficiency, control and aesthetics of a vehicle air freshener the present invention proposes to incorporate the invention and all of its components within a rear view mirror.
The invention would vastly improve the effectiveness of an air freshener by means of incorporating a "pulse air system, in particular the invention would electronically control a sub-miniature low noise fan to blow low pressure air through or around a removable fragrance cartridge, the electronic control circuit which is either powered by internal batteries or by the vehicle's own power supply would incorporate a cyclic timer with infinitely adjustable "on" and doffs periods, thus in practice the invention would overcome the human olfactory system by providing regular short bursts of fragrance rather than a constant stream of fragrance, furthermore the effectiveness of the fragrance is further improved as the gentle short bursts wafting from the rear view mirror are directed towards the driver.
In addition to the effective control and delivery of fragrance the invention would also conserve the fragrance by dispensing it only when the vehicle was occupied thus ensuring very long periods between fragrance cartridge changes, furthermore would, unlike most Plug in" fragrances which require a constant stream of air from the vehicle, operate independent of the vehicles air condition system.
When the invention is connected to the vehicle's ignition I accessory circuit the internal batteries within the device are disabled therefore the fragrance is first released into the vehicle's interior when the ignition key is turned thus providing the driver and passengers with a pleasant experience at the start of their journey, the device then continues to periodically waft the fragrance into the vehicle's interior until the ignition system is finally turned off.
When the invention relies upon the internal batteries within the device the control system is then activated via an internal motion senor, thus the cyclic timing begins each time the vehicle moves in any direction, therefore when the vehicle is unoccupied the control system shuts down the device in order to conserve the batteries and fragrance.
The invention will now be described in detail by way of example and reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the invention attached to a vehicle's original rear view mirror by way of elasticized straps, these attachments facilitate the easy removal and refitting without damage or use of adhesives, furthermore the invention could also be fitted in the inverted position and since the invention overlays the original mirror with a larger mirror a safety feature is thus created by providing a significantly larger rear view area.
Figure 2 shows the invention in another form whereby two directional output vents are incorporated into either end of the device thus facilitating directional control, likewise the device could be attached in the inverted position.
Figure 3 shows the invention in yet another form whereby the output vent is a slim aperture which runs the length of the device, again the device could be attached in the inverted position.
Figure 4 shows a general perspective view of the invention the likes of which incorporates a power socket [2] which in conjunction with a power plug would connect to the vehicle's own ignition / accessory circuit whist disconnecting the internal batteries, also shown are the controls which adjust the on and off periods of the pulse air system 15 & 8] in addition to the on / off switch [4], furthermore a battery compartment cover [3] is shown together with the output vents which periodically discharge the fragrance [7].
Figure 5 shows a side view of the invention demonstrating the operation of the hinged compartment which houses the fragrance cartridge [6] thus allowing any different fragrances to be substituted to suit personal moods.
Figure 6 shows a perspective view of the removable environmentally friendly fragrance cartridge which due to its construction is recyclable, in particular can be recharged with a fragrance by way of a simple dispenser.
Figure 7 shows a cross sectional side view of the invention whereby the internal components are identified, in particular the none slip padded protection material [121 together with the elasticated straps which secure the invention to the vehicle's original rear view mirror [9], also the location of the internal batteries [10] and the printed circuit board which houses the electronic control system [12] together with the motion sensor [14], also shown is the sub miniature low noise fan which periodically blows the fragrance into the vehicle's interior [13] and finally a visual indicator (LED) which confirms the control system is operating [15].
Figure 8 shows a detailed cross sectional view of the first method of releasing the fragrance utilising an environmentally friendly articulated filer material whereby air is drawn in by the sub miniature fan [13] and then forced through the articulated filter material which is impregnated with fragrance thus mixing the air and fragrance before discharging into the vehicle's interior.
Figure 9 shows a detailed cross sectional view of the second method of releasing the fragrance utilising a disposable impregnated gel material [18] which is supported by a thin backing material [17] whereby air is drawn in by the sub miniature fan [13] and then forced across the inner surface areas of the impregnated reinforced gel material thus mixing the air and fragrance before discharging into the vehicle's interior.
