Abstract
A mortuary tray retriever includes an attachment frame, which can be mounted to an existing load handling machine. The frame provides both support and powered forwards and backward propulsion for mortuary body trays. The trays can then be transferred to and from their storage cabinets without any manual intervention simply by the selection of direction and transfer speed switches. The retriever is battery powered. The retriever may include a digital weigh scale for the measurements of the applied load (a deceased body). The retriever can handle loads up to and including 320kg. The retriever comprises a gripper carried by an endless conveyor belt.

MORTUARY TRAY RETRIEVER
The invention relates to a handling aid for the movement of mortuary trays into and out of the existing storage cabinets. The trays when laden support deceased human bodies. To be used in hospital morgues and undertakers.
Manual type trolleys already exist, but suffer from two distinct disadvantages.
One being the manual effort for an operator to push and pull the dead weight exceeds the health and safety guidelines. Another is being unable to attain the lowest and highest shelf height in some situations.
The object of this invention is to provide the pushing and pulling force for the operator at the push of a button. And allow easier access to all shelf heights without using steps or other aids.
Accordingly the handling aid provides a battery-powered attachment which can be mounted to most existing handling equipment allowing easy handling of deceased bodies.
Preferably the aid is made of metal and plastic materials.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 shows an existing mortuary body tray; FIGURE 2 shows a side view of the tray sat on the handling aid attachment; FIGURE 3 is a section through the attachment showing how the tray sits on rollers; FIGURE 4 shows the handling aid attachment mounted to an existing standard battery powered truck; FIGURE 5 shows the truck and attachment combination at the lowest shelf height; FIGURE 6 shows the truck and attachment combination at the highest shelf height.
As shown in Figure 4, battery power is provided to power a push pull arm forwards and backwards along a support frame which grabs the body tray in Figure 1 and is able to retrieve and place back to and from the storage cabinets as shown in Figures 5 and 6.
The handling aid has been designed as an attachment which when provided with either a 12 or 24 Volt DC battery supply can operate with many existing handling trucks.
Power to the push pull grab is provided via a DC motor gearbox and chain slide system.
The system can also incorporate a digital weigh scale system. To display the weight of the deceased body. This system includes a load cell and a display again powered from the same 12 or 24 Volt DC battery supply.
Claims (10)
1. A mortuary tray retrieving attachment frame which can be secured to an existing handling truck incorporating a powered push pull body tray grab so that handling of deceased bodies requires no manual effort to transfer to and from their storage cabinets.
2. An attachment as claimed in Claim 1 where the existing mortuary body trays are propelled under power.
3. An attachment as claimed in Claim 1 where the operator provides no manual effort to transfer the body trays to and from the storage cabinets.
4. An attachment as claimed in claim 1 that is fitted to existing handling machines.
5. An attachment as claimed in claim 1 that is battery powered.
6. An attachment as claimed in claim 1 that the body tray can handled safely on.
7. An attachment as claimed in claim 1 that has a grab hitch to secure the body trays.
8. An attachment as claimed in claim 1 that can incorporate if so desired a digital weigh scale device.
9. A retriever as claimed in any preceding claim which is made from metal and plastic materials.
10. A mortuary tray retrieving attachment as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
