A BLIND RIVET WITH RETAINED MANDREL
This invention relates to blind rivets having the facility to capture and retain secondary components.
It is recognised that blind rivets make a considerable contribution to reducing the cost of a component through increased speed of assembly and the low cost of the rivet itself. For instance, without the benefit of blind rivets, components would have to be bolted together thus demanding access from both sides of the components and an attendant increase in assembly time. Furthermore, where weight is an issue, the bolted components would be heavier. Other means of assembly, such as selfpiercing riveting, require the use of specialist application equipment that is expensive.
Blind rivets are used for a variety of applications from the securing of thin sheets to the securing of a variety of relatively thick components to a variety of types and thickness of sheet materials. The rivet setting operation involves the placing of a blind rivet in previously prepared holes, setting by the operation of a setting tool and once completed the mandrel having ruptured at its breaking point is removed as scrap.
The rivet thus remains as a permanent fixing securing the component pieces together and cannot make further contribution to the assembly of the application.
A prior known blind rivet that has a secondary pulling head is disclosed in European Patent Number 0142960 (Tucker GmbH). This patent shows a rivet that has a mandrel with a weakened region where it breaks when the setting load has been reached. In this case the part of the mandrel that has broken off is discarded and has no further function.
It is an object of the present invention to contribute to reducing the overall cost of a riveted assembly.
It is a further object to reduce the number of fasteners used in a specific assembly and reduce the amount of scrap in the form of spent mandrels.
A further object of the present invention is to reduce the cost of the assembly by providing a facility for the attachment of other components and by eliminating the fasteners that would otherwise be necessary to hold the components in place.
According to the present invention there is provided a blind rivet for fixing secondary components to a substrate, the rivet comprising a hollow body having a head, and shank that has a deformable portion that is deformable against the substrate when the rivet is set, the rivet being provided with a mandrel extending through the body, and the mandrel having a head located adjacent a free end of the shank and a free end that projects beyond the head of the body, said free end being provided with a protrusion that in use co-operates with a retaining feature on the secondary component to retain the secondary component on the mandrel.
Preferably the protrusion is spaced from the head of the mandrel by a distance that allows the head of the mandrel to be pulled towards the head of the body during setting of the rivet to position the protrusion at a final position where the protrusion stands proud of the head of the rivet by a distance corresponding to a predetermined dimension measured from a retaining feature on the secondary component to the head of the body of the rivet.
The protrusion may have a conical or convex surface that faces towards the head of the mandrel. The protrusion may have a conical or convex surface that faces away from the head of the mandrel.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic cross sectional view of a riveted assembly and shows a rivet constructed in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 shows the rivet shown in Figure 1 after it has been set; one half of the drawing shows the rivet prior to assembly of a secondary component, and the other half shows the rivet after assembly of a secondary component.
Referring to Figure 1 the rivet 10 comprises a hollow body 11 having a shank 12 and a head 13 in the form of a flange. The shank 12 has an end portion 14 adjacent the free end of the shank 12 and an intermediate collapsible portion 15.
A mandrel 16 extends through the body 11 of the rivet 10. The mandrel 16 has a head 17 that engages the free end 14 of the shank. The stem of the mandrel 16 extends beyond the head 13 of the rivet 10 and is provided with a protrusion 18 that defines a pulling head at, or adjacent to the free end of the mandrel 16. The protrusion 18 is positioned a predetermined distance from the head 17 of the mandrel 16 such that after setting, as will be explained herein later, the protrusion 18 stands proud of the head 13 of the body 11 by a predetermined dimension corresponding to the distance between a retaining feature on the secondary component and the head 13 of the body 11.
To set the rivet 10 the mandrel 16 is loaded into the jaws of a riveting tool (not shown) and the shank 12 of the body 11 is inserted into a hole 19 in a substrate 20 (which could be a single component or two or more components of an assembly to be riveted together). The length and diameter of the shank 12 are chosen to suit the thickness and materials of the substrate 20 to be riveted together. The length is such as to ensure that the collapsible portion 15 is located on the opposite side of the substrate 20, to that where the tool is located. The tool is pushed against the head 13 of the body 11 and operated to pull on the protrusion 18 and thereby pull the head 17 of the mandrel 16 towards the head 13 of the body 11. This action causes the collapsible portion 15 of the shank to deform radially outwards and engage the substrate 20 to be riveted thus setting the rivet 10.
On completion of the setting of the rivet 10, the tool is removed from the mandrel 16 to leave the protrusion 18 standing proud of the head 13 of the body 11.
A secondary component 25 is provided with a retaining device 23 in the form of a spring clip having two mutually confronting sides defining a narrow mouth 24 extending along an axis (see Figure 2). The retaining device 23 may be riveted to the secondary component 25 or may be adhesively bonded to it as shown 21. Each side of the mouth 24 is shaped to have a tapered lead-in edge 26. Alternatively, the mouth 24 may extend around a closed loop such as, for example, a circle or an oval profile.
The shape and dimensions of the mouth 24 are designed to allow the protrusion 18 to enter the mouth 24 and be retained by the retaining device 23.
In use, to join a secondary component 25 to the substrate 20, the secondary component 25 is offered up to the protrusion 18 with the tapered lead-in edge(s) 26 in touch with the protrusion 18, (as shown in the right hand side of Figure 2) and the secondary component 25 is pushed firmly towards the head 13 of the body 11 to cause the protrusion 18 to move past the mouth 24 and be retained by the retaining device 23 (as shown in the left hand side of Figure 2).
Preferably, the distance that the protrusion 18 stands proud of the head 13 of the body 11 matches the dimension measured from the mouth 24 to the edge 26 of the secondary component 25 that contacts the substrate 20 (as shown in the left hand side of Figure 2).
In a further embodiment of the present invention, where the distance between the protrusion 18 and the head 13 of the body 11 is too small to accommodate the setting tool, the stem of the mandrel 16 may extend beyond the location of the protrusion 18 (as shown dotted as portion 32 in Figure 1). In this case, a zone of weakness 30 is provided adjacent that side of the protrusion 18 that faces away from the head 12 of the body. The zone of weakness allows the free end portion 32 of the mandrel 16 outboard of the protrusion 18 to break off when the rivet 10 is set, leaving the mandrel 16 and protrusion 17 in place on which to mount the secondary component 25.
