Abstract

The present invention provides, erected or as a blank, a packaging container formed from foldable sheet material and comprising a lid part 14 having a flap 26 which can be secured at its distal end to a base part 16 so as to form a protective enclosure for storage and transport of goods, the flap comprising a tear tape 28 by which the remainder of the flap can be separated from the distal end, allowing separation of the lid part 14 from the base part 16, for example along lines of perforations along an edge of a lid panel 22 and within a front wall 36, 44. The lid 14 can thus be removed, allowing goods contained in the base part 16 to be placed on a supermarket shelf or the like, for display and customer selection. The tear tape 28 does not detract from the strength and protective ability of the closed packaging container.

Description

BP-()9 0456 l
TRANSIT AND DISPLAY PACKAGING
This invention concerns packaging fonned from foldable sheet material such as con ugated board and which may be used to contain and protect goods in transit, as well as to display these goods for sale in retail premises such as supermarkets.
Supermarkets and similar retail outlets are concerned to minimise packaging waste generated on their premises, as well as simplifying waste recycling, to reduce labour costs and satisfy environmental concerns. They also desire to reduce the labour involved in lo unpacking goods and loading them onto shelves and other displays for customer selection.
Conventional secondary transit packaging is labour intensive for shelf loading as the goods, usually in primary packaging, must be removed from the transit packaging and stacked on the shelf for display. Furthennore, particularly with delicate goods, the less they are handled, the lower the chance of accidental damage.
It is known to provide secondary packaging fonned from foldable sheet materials with lines of perforations by which a lid or tear-out panel can be removed. The secondary packaging thus opened can be placed directly on shelving or the lice to display the contained goods for sale. The goods are only removed *om the secondary packaging upon selection by a customer. However, the lines of perforations tend to weaken the secondary packaging, reducing its effectiveness in protecting the goods during transit and storage.
T he present invention provides, erected or as a blank, a packaging container formed from 2s foldable sheet material and comprising a lid part having a flap which can be secured at its distal end to a base part so as to form a protective enclosure for storage and transport of goods, the flap comprising a tear tape by which the remainder of the flap can be separated from the distal end, allowing separation of the lid part from the base part. The lid can thus be removed, allowing goods contained in the base part to be placed on a supermarket shelf or the like, for display and customer selection. The tear tape does not detract from the strength and protective ability of the closed packaging container.
BP-09-04S6 Preferably, the container base part has a side wall which overlaps the tear tape, helping to disguise any ragged edge of the flap distal end left attached to the base part after removal of the lid. The tear tape is preferably of the kind that is longitudinally ruptured in use to provide a particularly clean torn edge to the lid flap.
A pair of such flaps each incorporating a tear tape may be attached one along each of a pair of opposite edges of the lid part. The base part may comprise side walls attached to a bottom panel and to which the distal ends of the lid flaps are attached in the erected packaging container. Further, the lid part may comprise a lid panel carrying the lid flaps o and connected to the base part by a rear panel. The rear panel may be delineated from the lid panel by a line of weakness, rupturable to allow separation of the lid part *om the base part after rupturing the tear tapes. The base part may also carry a front wall which carries a closure flap attachable to the lid panel on erection of the case. The closure flap can preferably be separated *om the *ont wall along a line of weakness so as to allow Is separation of the lid part *om the base part. Preferably the line of weakness extends into the front wall so that a portion of the front wall is separated *om the base part together with the lid part.
The invention and its preferred features and advantages is further described below with reference to an illustrative embodiment shown in the drawings, in which: Fig. I shows a machine erectable blank for a packaging container embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 shows the blank partially erected, prior to securing the lid part closed; Fig. 3 shows part of the closed container, with a tear tape ready for opening; Fig. 4 shows the tear tape of Fig. 3 being torn open; Fig. 5 shows the lid part being removed to re-open the container; and Fig. 6 shows the rc- opened container.
Referring to Fig. 1, the packaging container blank 10 comprises a lid part 14 and a base part 16 joined to each other at a line of weakness, e. g. in the form of perforations 18. The lid part comprises a lid panel 22 carrying opposed lid flaps 20 delineated by fold lines 24.
Tear tapes 28 incorporated in, and running the entire length of, the blank delineate distal BP-09-0456 portions 26 of each lid flap 20. The tear tapes are preferably of a longitudinally rupturable kind, for example as sold under the registered trade marks "SESAME" or "ADALIS". These operate with a scissor action, tending to produce a clean edge to the ruptured blank material. The blank 10 is preferably fonmed from corrugated board of sufficient strength to provide the desired protection during transit and storage. The board outer face may be made from a paper grade suitable to take the desired quality of printed graphics, enabling the container to be used for goods display on supennarket shelves or the like. Alternatively, any necessary graphics or labelling can be applied to the packaging container by any other conventional means as appropriate.
The base part 16 comprises a base panel 30 and opposed side walls 32 delineated by fold lines 34. The base panel 30 also carries a front wall 36 attached along a fold line 38.
The front wall 36 in tunn carries a closure flap 40 delineated by a fold line 42. The closure flap 40 and an adjacent portion of the front wall 36 may be separated from the remainder of the blank 10 by rupturing a line of perforations or similar line of weakness 44 as further described below.
The lid part 14 is attached to the base part 16 by a rear panel 46 extending between the line of weakness 18 and a fold line 48 delineating the rear panel 46 from the base panel 30. The rear panel 46 and front wall 36 each carry glue flaps 50 which are secured inside and overlapping the side walls 32 on erection of the blank. The semi-erected packaging container thus fonmcd is shown in Fig. 2. The container is then filled with goods (not shown) and the distal ends 26 of the lid flaps 20 are secured (e.g. glued) to overlap the side walls 32 of the base part 16. At the same time, the closure flap 40 is folded inwards through 90 and glued or otherwise secured to the underside of the lid panel 22.
Re-opening the packaging container, e.g. at a supermarket or like retail premises is shown in Figs. 3-6. A tear tape end in each lid flap 20 is provided with a tab 52 die cut from the remainder of the flap 20 so that it can be folded out as shown in Fig. 3. It is then gripped by a user as shown in Fig. 4, to pull central strands 54 of the tear tape 28 through the lid Map 20. In this way, the lid panel 22 and remainder of the lid flap 20 are severed from the flap distal ends 26, which remain attached to the base part 16. The user can then break the lines of perforations 18 and 44 as shown in Fig. 5 and remove the lid part 14 BP-09-04s6 from the base part 16 for recycling. The base part as shown in Fig. 6, and its contents, can then be placed directly on a supermarket shelf or the like, for display and selection of the contents by customers.
