Abstract

A flexible, wind-actuated wiper for cleaning an external rear view mirror of a lorry comprises a strip 1 of stockingette type fabric which is suspended from the mounting bracket or housing of the mirror by a hook and loop fastener 2 to which the strip is sewn or bonded. Air turbulence caused by the movement of the lorry through the air causes the strip to move randomly over the surface of the mirror, thereby cleaning the mirror. The device may be made in a variety of sizes to suit different mirror types and styles.

LORRY MIRROR WIPE
The invention relates to a fabric strip or strips that may be attached to the external rear view mirrors of lorries or other commercial vehicles.
Being exposed to the elements, the external rear view mirrors of commercial vehicles are highly prone to becoming dirty. This is particularly true during journeys made in poor weather conditions. As the mirrors become increasingly obscured, the rearward view available to the diver deteriorates until it becomes a serious safety concern. This situation is compounded by the fact that in most cases, no alternative rearward viewing method is available. Cleaning both mirrors by hand in a moving vehicle is inadvisable and therefore a stop is required.
The object of the invention is to keep the external rear view mirrors clean at all times thus removing the need for cleaning stops and preventing dangerous rear view blind spots.
The invention is simile e in construction, consisting of a strip of "stockingette" fabric attached to a Velcro scrap. This strap is used to affix the strip to the structure of the mirror housing. As the vehicle moves, the air turbulence created excites the fabric causing it to move in a random manner. Contact between the mirror and the fabric occurs and the wiping motion ensures that the mirror remains clean. The mirror wipe can be made in a variety of sizes to suit different mirrors and can also be produced in fabric including colours / patterns / slogans etc. Essential features of the lorry mirror wipe are that it is long enough to move in the air turbulence and be able to make contact with all of the mirror surface, the length should be approximately 18 inches. The stockingette should be made from an absorbent material with a high cotton content to give best cleaning performare (some low absorbent man made materials may not clean as well). The Velcro attachment strip (2) should be firmly bonded or sewn to the stockingette (1) so as not to fall off the lorry. The Velcrostrip (2) should give a secure fastening to itself so as not to fall off the lorry.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 The Lorry Mirror Wipe is constructed from a strip of "stockingette" fabric (part number 1) and a Velcro7strap (part number 2). The two parts are joined by either sewing or bonding.
Figure 2 The Velcro. strip is used to attach the item to the vehicle mirror structure (A) by looping around any appropriate feature. It attaches to itself rather than directly to the structure.
The complete Lorry Mirror Wipe (fig 1) is shown in situ.
Figure 3 Figure three illustrates the complete Lorry Mirror Wipe (fig 1) is shown in situ in relationship to the lorry (B).
