Description

Scaffolding Guard The present invention relates to a guard, particularly
but not exclusively for use on scaffolding.
Scaffolding alongside a building or similar structure conventionally provides support for boards forming a walkway or platform. A scaffolding pole is provided above the boards at about waist height as a safety rail. A further board is generally set on edge along the outer edge of the walkway to provide a vertical kick board, and a scaffolding guard may be hung from the safety rail to cover the gap between the safety rail and the kick board. Conventional scaffolding guards comprise a generally planar mesh screen, with small wire hooks welded to the screen. The hooks enable the guard to be hung from a scaffolding pole such that it lies in a generally vertical plane. Such scaffolding guards can prove difficult to stack because the hooks may penetrate and snag the screen of an adjacent guard.
According to the present invention, there is provided a guard for use in scaffolding, the guard including a screen member, a hook member for mounting the screen member to the scaffolding, and a fastener, the fastener being arranged to movably mount the hook member to the screen member.
Preferably the hook member is elongate, and preferably the fastener is arranged to allow pivotal movement of the hook member about its longitudinal axis.
Preferably the hook member includes a body portion and a hook portion. Preferably the hook portion extends from one end of the body portion. Preferably a retaining portion extends from the other end of the body portion.
Preferably the screen member comprises a plurality of elongate members defining openings therebetween.
Preferably the fastener extends around a part of the body portion of the hook member and a part of one of the elongate members, and may form a sleeve. The body portion part and the elongate member part may be substantially parallel, and may be substantially abutting. The fastener may be substantially closed around the body portion part and the elongate member part.
Preferably the fastener is arranged to allow the hook member to pivot from a hanging position in which the hook portion is substantially perpendicular to the screen member, to a storage position in which the hook portion is parallel to the screen member.
Preferably the fastener is arranged to substantially prevent separation of the hook member from the elongate member by a user without the use of a tool.
Preferably the fastener is formed from a member of sheet material which may be formed of steel, and is desirably formed of cold rolled steel.
The sheet material member may be initially substantially planar, and may be formed into the fastener by a tool. The sheet material may be approximately 1 mm in thickness.
Preferably the fastener includes a joint line, which may deviate out of alignment with the longitudinal axis of the elongate member part and/or the body portion part. Preferably the joint line is formed by a pair of opposite edges on the sheet material. Preferably one of the edges includes a projection. Preferably the other edge includes a recess. Preferably the recess corresponds in shape to the projection. Preferably when the fastener is formed, the recess receives the projection.
Preferably the fastener is approximately between 20 and 25mm in length.
Preferably the fastener is arranged to allow an amount of relative longitudinal movement between the hook member and the elongate member.
Preferably the hook member is mounted to the screen member by a pair of spaced fasteners, and desirably both fasteners are mounted to the l O same elongate member.
Preferably the guard comprises a pair of spaced, substantially parallel hook members.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a guard according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of the guard in use; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of part of the guard.
Figs. 1 and 2 show a scaffolding guard 10 including a generally planar rectangular screen 20. The screen 20 comprises a plurality of spaced parallel first elongate members 12, which in the in use position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are aligned substantially vertically, and a plurality of spaced parallel second elongate members 14 which in the in use position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are aligned substantially horizontally. The vertical elongate members 12 and the horizontal elongate members 14 are formed of steel wire between 2 - 4 mm in diameter and are arranged to form a grid, defining openings 16 of between 50 - 70mm square.
The vertical members 12 are generally in a first plane and the horizontal members 14 are generally in an adjacent plane. The vertical and horizontal members 12, 14 are attached to one another, for example by welding, where they cross over one another, thereby giving the screen structural stability.
In one example, the size of the guard 10 is approximately 0.8m in the vertical direction and approximately 1.3m in the horizontal direction. The guard 10 includes a pair of spaced hook members 18, each hook member 18 comprising an elongate body portion 22. The body portion extends at one end to form a generally C-shaped hook portion 24 the open part of the C shape facing downwardly in use. At the other end, the body portion 22 extends to form a retaining portion 26, in which portion the hook member extends firstly transversely to the body portion 22 and then secondly along an axis which is parallel with the longitudinal axis of the body portion 22. The retaining portion 26 and the hook portion 24 lie substantially in the same plane.
The hook members 18 are formed of steel wire approximately 4-5mm in thickness.
Each hook member 18 is movably mounted to the screen 20 by a pair of spaced fasteners 30. Each fastener 30 is formed from a cold rolled steel sheet member approximately 1 mm in thickness. The sheet member is initially substantially planar, and is formed by a tool into a fastener 30 in the form of a sleeve around a part of the body portion 22 and an adjacent, abutting part of one of the elongate members 12. The fastener 30 includes a pair of opposite I edges 34, 36 which, when the fastener 30 is formed, are brought into abutting relationship to form a joint line 32. One of the edges 34 includes a projection 38, and the other edge 36 includes a recess 40 corresponding in shape to the projection 38 and which, when the fastener 30 is formed, receives the projection 38, so that the joint line 32 deviates out of alignment with the longitudinal axis of the part of the elongate member 12 and the part of the body portion 22.
The fastener 30 is arranged so that pivotal movement of the hook member 22 about its longitudinal axis is allowed relative to the vertical elongate member 12, while the hook member 22 is held against the vertical elongate member 12. The fastener 30 also allows relative longitudinal movement of the hook member 18 and the vertical elongate member 12. This 1 0 longitudinal movement is limited between one position in which the curvature of the hook portion 24 prevents further longitudinal movement through the uppermost fastener 30, the fastener 30 abutting against an adjacent lower horizontal elongate member 14, and another position in which longitudinal movement of hook member 18 is limited by the abutment of the retaining portion 26 against the lowermost fastener 30, the lowermost fastener 30 abutting against an adjacent upper horizontal elongate member 14.
Fig. 2 shows the guard 10 in use. The hook portion 24 is hooked over a scaffolding pole 50 so that the guard 10 is suspended in a substantially vertical plane. In this position, the hook portion 24 lies in a plane substantially perpendicular to the plane of the screen 20. A toe board 52 is positioned against the lowermost portion of the screen 20, the retaining portion 26 extending over and down alongside the toe board 52 to retain the toe board 52 in position against the screen 20.
The fastener 30 provides a strong and tamper proof means of fastening the hook members 18 to the screen 20. Once formed, the fastener 30 substantially prevents separation of the hook member 18 from the elongate member 12 by a user without the use of a tool. The deviating joint line 32 reduces the possibility of either the hook member 18 or the vertical elongate member 12 pulling through the joint line 32 when in use. The fastener 30 is easily formed with the correct tool, and provides a rapid and economical fastening means, without deformation of the screen 20.
For storage purposes, the hook members 18 are rotated so that the hook portions 24 and the retaining portions 26 lie in a plane parallel with the plane of the screen 20. The longitudinal movement of the hook members 18 in the fastener members 30 allows the hook portions 24 to be retracted or at least partially retracted to lie flat against the screen 20. This minimises the possibility of entanglement between guards and hook members when a l O number of guards are stacked one on top of another for storage.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. The fastener may be any suitable size or shape, and may be formed of any suitable material. A different number of fasteners may be used for each hook member, and a guard may include a different number of hook members from that described. The shape of the hook members may be different. The guard 10 illustrated lies in a flat plane. However the guard could for example be curved.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
