Abstract

A louvre 11 comprises an elongate nose portion 16, an elongate crown portion 17 having an arched shape, and an elongate intermediate portion 18 between the nose 16 and crown 17 portions. Crown portion 17 may be convex having a first upward curved portion 17a and a second downward curved portion 17b providing low resistance to air flow. Nose portion 16 may be non vertical, may have a convex upper surface and may comprise a lip 23 turned inwards. An elongate gutter 21 on an upper surface of the crown portion 17 and an elongate gutter 22 on an underside of the crown portion 17 may be provided to trap residual moisture carried by the air flow. Intermediate portion 18 may have a shallow concaved surface or may be multi-faceted such that the entire louvre 11 is swan-neck shaped and restricts rain from entering a building. Elongate formations 19, 20 on the crown portion 17 may be clipped into formations 14, 15 of a bracket 10. Louvres 11 may be spaced in an assembly such that it is not possible to see though the assembly. The assembly may be provided with a bird and/or insect screen.

Description

AN ARCHITECTURAL WEATHER LOUVRE
This invention relates to an elongate architectural weather louvre and to an assembly of such louvres which are intended to prevent or substantially prevent rain entering through an opening in a building or other structure but which allows ventilation.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided an elongate architectural weather louvre comprising an elongate nose portion adjacent to one longitudinal edge, an elongate crown portion adjacent to the other longitudinal edge and an elongate intermediate portion between the nose portion and the crown portion, the crown portion, with the louvre considered supported in use to extend horizontally, being convex and having a first upwardly curved or substantially curved portion adjacent to the intermediate portion and a second downwardly curved or substantially curved portion adjacent to said other longitudinal edge.
"Substantially curved" is intended to cover a multi-faceted crown having a minimum of five facets and preferably ten or more facets in order to minimise the resistance to air flow over the crown of the louvre as air flow changes direction. The facets could be curved or flat.
Preferred and/or optional features of the first aspect of the invention are set forth in claims 2 to 10, inclusive.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a louvre assembly comprising two or more spaced apart brackets supporting a plurality of louvres according to the first aspect of the invention in spaced apart relationship.
Preferred and/or optional features of the second aspect of the invention are set forth in claims 14 to 16, inclusive.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure l is a cross-sectional view of one embodiment of a louvre assembly according to the second aspect of the invention and comprising a plurality of louvres each according to one embodiment of the first aspect of the invention, and Figure 2 shows the louvres of Figure 1 with the brackets omitted for clarity.
Referring firstly to Figure 1 of the drawings, the louvre assembly shown therein comprises two or more support brackets 10 which are spaced apart horizontally, typically by a distance of about 150 mm and a plurality of elongate weather louvres 11 supported in vertically spaced apart relationship by the brackets 10.
Each bracket 10 has a vertical limb 12 which is attached to a building or structure (not shown) having an opening to be protected from rain by the louvres 11.
Each bracket also has a plurality (as shown 3) of generally horizontally extending arms 13 for supporting the louvres 11. Each arm 13 has two spaced elongate formations 14 and 15 for co-operating with corresponding formations on a louvre 11.
Formation 14 is adjacent to the free end of its respective arm 13 and formation 15 is adjacent to the vertical limb 12.
The louvres 11 extend horizontally, but in vertically spaced apart relationship and typically have a length of 2400 to 3000 mm. The louvres 11 are typically of extruded aluminium.
Each louvre 11 comprises an elongate nose portion 16 adjacent to one longitudinal edge, an elongate crown portion 17 adjacent to the other longitudinal edge and an elongate intermediate portion 18 between the nose portion 16 and the crown portion 17.
The nose portion 16 is non-vertical and preferably, as shown, has a convex upper surface.
The crown portion 17 has a convex upper surface which, as shown, is of substantially semi-cylindrical shape and has a first upwardly curved portion 17a adjacent to the intermediate portion 18 and a second downwardly curved portion 17_ adjacent to the longitudinal free edge of the crown portion 17. The crown 17 could be of other arched shape.
The crown portion 17 also has two elongate formations 19 and 20 which cooperate respectively with the formations 14 and 15 of the brackets 10 in order to clip the louvres in position. The crown portion 17 also has two elongate gutters 21 and 22, both adjacent its longitudinal free edge. The gutter 21 is on the upper surface of the louvre 11 and the gutter 22 is on the lower surface of the louvre and these gutters serve to trap any residual moisture which may be carried through the assembly of louvres by air flow.
The gradient of the intermediate portion 18 increases from the nose portion 16 towards the crown portion 17 and preferably as shown has a shallow concave upper surface.
The free edge of the nose portion 16 has an in-turned lip 23.
As will be noted, the louvres 11 are of swan-neck shape in transverse cross section and the smoothly curved surface portions of each of the louvres form an aerodynamic shape which offers least resistance to air flow through the louvre assembly but yet which serves to restrict the entry of rain into the building or structure.
Although the crown portion 17 is described above as being of substantially semi-cylindrical shape, it could be of other curved shapes and could, for example, have a more steeply curved portion 17a and a less steeply inclined portion 17b.
Ideally, the space between the louvres 11 is such that it is not possible to see through the louvre assembly, although in some circumstances this is not essential. In order that it is not possible to see through the louvre assembly, the curved portion 17_ of the crown 17 should extend downwardly sufficiently to ensure no vision when the 1ouvres are spaced apart vertically at a pitch of 50 millimetres.
The louvre assembly may also be provided with a bird and/or insect screen.
As described, the nose portion 16, crown portion 17 and intermediate portion 18 are all curved as this produces the least resistance to air flow through the louvre assembly. However, the nose portion could be flat although, in this case, it is preferably inclined to the vertical. The intermediate portion 18 could be multi-faceted although in this case the gradient of the intermediate portion preferably still increases from the nose portion 16 to the crown portion 17. The crown portion 17 could also be multi-faceted although in this case it should have a minimum of five facets and preferably ten or more facets in order to minimise the resistance to air flow over the crown portion 17 as the air flow changes direction.
The louvre assembly described above has been described with the louvres 11 extending horizontally. However, it would be possible to arrange the louvre assembly so that the louvres extend vertically.
The above embodiments are given by way of example only and various modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims. s
